Clipper developed COACH to support the Group’s energy efficiency strategy in 2011. This in-house performance management system was gradually rolled out to selected bulk carriers, multipurpose vessels and chemical tankers, both owned, time chartered and pool tonnage.

Since 2014 COACH energy efficiency solution has been available externally. In total more than 300 ships are using COACH to optimize energy consump-tion and monitor vessel performance.

BUSINESS IMPACTCOACH serves commercial departments with accurate vessel specific speed and consumption descriptions.

Reducing speed is the simplest way to save fuel but it has to be commercially viable. COACH helps chartering and operation departments plan the optimal vessel speed - taking into

account the market conditions, vessel rates, bunker costs and current performance of the vessel.

COACH can contribute to optimizing the fleet portfolio by identifying fuel efficient designs and over-consuming chartered vessels.

PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENTCOACH assists operations and technical departments by analyzing the hull, propeller and engine efficiencies, and by monitoring the energy production onboard the vessel.

Hull fouling is the largest contributor to excess fuel consumption. COACH helps in identifying when fouling occurs, and can quantify the resulting speed loss and excess consumption.

COACH also enables technical departments to reduce fuel consumption onboard by analyzing the main engine performance and monitoring the auxiliary consumption on-board the vessel.

VOYAGEMONITORING

COACH provides the ship operator with valu-able information through daily noon reports from the vessel to the office. In addition to the noon reports, satellite information can be overlapped to track the progress of the ves-sel. During the voyage, COACH monitors the progress by comparing it to the instructions given from shore. If specified limits are not

complied with, COACH sends a notification to the operator.

The performance of the vessel is analyzed upon completion of the voyage. From the daily noon reports, COACH calculates detailed voyage summary statistics including deviations from speed and consumption agreements.
