    An error does not become

    truth by reason of

    multiplied propagation, nor

    does truth become error

    because nobody sees it.

We have flown the air lik

birds and swum the sea lik

fish, but we have yet to

    learn the simple act of

    walking the earth like

    brothers.

    Change will not come if

    we wait for some other

    person or some other time.

We are the ones we've beenwaiting for. We are the

    change that we seek.

    PRESIDENT BARACK H. OBAMAAugust 4, 1961Present

The non-violence practiced by men like Gandhi and King may not have been

practical or possible in every circumstance, but the love that they preached -- the

fundamental faith in human progress -- that must always be the North Star tha

guides us on our journey. For if we lose that faith -- if we dismiss it as silly or na

if we divorce it from the decisions that we make on issues of war and peace then

lose what's best about humanity. We lose our sense of possibility. We lose our mocompass.

"As someone who is a direct consequence of Dr. King's life's work, I am living

testimony to the moral force of nonviolence. I know there is nothing weak -- noth

passive -- nothing naive -- in the creed and lives of Gandhi and King. But as a he

of state sworn to protect and defend my nation, I cannot be guided by their examp

alone. I face the world as it is, and cannot stand idle in the face of threats to th

American people. For make no mistake: Evil does exist in the world."

When we can no longer even engage in a civil conversation with each other ove

the things that truly matter -- at that point we don't merely lose our capacityto solve big challenges. We lose something essential about ourselves.

Civil rights activist who played a key role in efforts that led to passage

of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Civil rights pioneer Amelia Boynton

Robinson is perhaps best known as the woman at the front of the

March 7, 1965 Bloody Sunday march in Selma, Alabama. Robinson

was gassed, beaten, and left for dead that day on the Edmund Pettus

Bridge. She bravely welcomed SCLC & SNCC civil rights activistJames Bevel and Bernard LaFayette to her home when they arrived in

Selma, AL to secure voting rights.

To give African Americans the vote, has cost worry, blood,

sweat, jobs and lives. It is a privilege we should have had all

the time. It is one we should use regardless.

A vote less people is a hopeless people.
