Reminders With winter quickly closing in, it is time to remind everyone to winterize your homes: � Put away your garden hoses � Clean the leaves from your gutters � Replace your furnace filters � Ensure all flammable materials are removed from around the furnace and wood burning stoves. Sweep the cob-

webs from the ceilings. � Make sure your property lines which meet the road are clear of your possessions for when the snow ploughing is

done. Ensure your children are aware of the danger of playing on the road when the snow ploughing equipment is being used.

Meetings October 18, 2010 – first meeting of the Social Housing Ad-hoc committee. November 2, 2010 – met with Chris Wilson, Fraser Valley Regional District and Rick Dekker, District Fire Chief, North Fraser Fire Depart-ment. Peter & I raised our concerns in regards to a couple of trailer park tenants. FVRD will be sending a letter of support for dealing with the tenants who are not acting responsibly in keeping their yards clear of debris. November 17, 2010 – met with Cst. Fred Ritchie, the new RCMP liaison officer for our area. November 23, 2010 – second meeting of the Social Housing Ad-hoc committee. Arrears Current rental account is $116,472 and the Member Loan account of past rent is $250,000 for a total owing to LFN of $366,472. Renovations The renovations for INAC and CMHC have been completed. The final inspection by Harold Kelly will be done when he returns from holi-days at the end of the month. CMHC held a press conference at Leq'á:mel Community Building on November 9th in regards to the monies First Nations have received for the Canada Economic Action Plan (see press release in newsletter). LFN received the highest amount of money ($148,080) distributed to the 27 bands in the lower mainland. Miscellaneous Canada Mortgage & Housing Corporation performed an audit in the social housing department. This audit is done every 3 years. Docu-mentation for the housing files had been a problem in the past audits. The files are now complete with appliance histories, renovations, signed housing agreements and rental statements. There is now a history in each housing file. The auditor commented positively on the actions taken by LFN in regard to the rental arrears collection by ensuring statements of account are sent to the tenants. The new pump house is complete. The reservoir was drained and cleaned as well as the water lines are scheduled for cleaning when the weather improves. Chlorination of the water has started. The new LFN sign at the entrance to the park has been completed. Signage at Skweahm has been installed. Minor maintenance around the LFN community building has been done. The generator has been serviced and tested. Gary Paul attended the Water & Wastewater Conference in Vancouver on November 16-18, 2010. Al McDonald and Gary will be attend-ing the Hypo-chlorination course in Chilliwack in December. Leq'á:mel Community building was again a site for the Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival. The weekly drive-by inspections by Peter McDonald and myself continue. There are fewer homes receiving letters from myself requesting tenants to improve their yards. The social housing department has received several compliments on the condition of the reserve. Thanks to the maintenance staff for all their hard work keeping the grounds clean and to the tenants who have tidied up their yards. Annual Reviews: Social Assistant clients, some of you may be receiving letters in the next couple of months for the annual review. This is a normal practice and one that must be adhered to in order to continue with INAC funding for the Leq'á:mel First Nation band office.

Employment:

The Chehalis Employment Councillor, Robin Chapman will be in the Leq'á:mel office every Thursday. Robin is

here for the whole community and not just for those persons receiving social assistance. This is an oppor-

tunity for anyone seeking employment or looking at schooling for the trades to make an appointment to

meet with Robin.

WHO WOULD LIKE A TUTOR TO GET THEIR LEARNERS LICENCE FOR DRIV-

ING?

Are you ready to obtain your learners licence for driving? Would you like some tutoring to pass the learners licence? We would like to begin a session here at Leq'á:mel First Nation Office with the Literacy in Motion “Big Green Bus.” Edgar who drives the bus is educated in oral tutoring for people to get their driver’s licence. The course would be at the Leq'á:mel Office for Tuesday mornings, it would take approximately 5 – one hour sessions. As we would need to secure the board room for this course, I am asking any one who wishes to pursue this to contact me. We will not wait on a full class even one person can get this program going. Canada’sEconomicActionPlanCreatesJobsandImprovesHousingOnReservein

BritishColumbiaCHILLIWACK, BC, November 9, 2010 — The Government of Canada announced today an investment of more than $2.8 million as part of the year two funding through Canada’s Economic Action Plan to improve housing condi-tions for 27 First Nation communities in the Lower Mainland – Fraser Canyon region. Randy Kamp, Member of Parliament for Pitt Meadows – Maple Ridge – Mission, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), made the announcement at the Leq’a:mel First Nation along with community part-ners. “Year two of Canada’s Economic Action Plan demonstrates that our Government remains committed to improving housing conditions for First Nation communities in British Columbia,” said MP Kamp “Today’s investment will provide quality, affordable housing while creating jobs and stimulating the local economy.” Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada has committed $400 million over two years to help over 495 First Nation communities build needed new housing, repair and remediate existing non-pro8it housing for their members, and complement housing programs offered by CMHC. This investment will also pro-vide an economic stimulus for many First Nations and surrounding areas by creating jobs. Some $63 million in federal investments through Canada’s Economic Action Plan will be made available to First Nations in British Columbia to address immediate housing needs. Speci8ically, CMHC will allocate more than $2,801,000 to retro8it 273 housing units on-reserve in the Lower Main-land – Fraser Canyon region. “The retro8it of these homes is a step toward addressing our longstanding housing needs while helping us build our community’s equity,” said Leq’a:mel Chief Alice Thompson. “These projects represent major life changes for families here On-Reserve — and this opportunity would not have been possible without the support of the Gov-ernment of Canada and we would like to thank them.” More information on this and other measures in Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the federal government’s plan to stimulate the economy and protect those hit hardest by the global recession, can be found at: www.actionplan.gc.ca.
