Youth Programs –Now open to all Youth and Parents

As many of you should know by now, all Youth Programs (Youth Night, Youth Out-

ings, Youth Meetings, Fundraisers, Regalia Making and Drumming) were all cancelled due

to a serious lack of Youth and Parent participation as a whole. From the start of this year, we

have seen the worst attendance since the Youth Program has started. During the summer 2012,

the attendance only got worse, which is the result of everything having to be cancelled and re-

vamped in order to make the programs more open to one and all.

We took this time to meet once a week on Wednesday evenings, with snacks and door prizes, for all Youth and Par-

ents from LFN and Non-LFN. Opening up the Youth Program to outside the comforts of the LFN Community has proven

to be great. The few non-native and non-LFN parents have been motivated and excited about having an opportunity for

their children as well as themselves to take part in activities in the community.

During these meetings, it was decided by me as well as the Parents that more responsibility was going to have to be

placed on the shoulders of the Parents in order for them to attend, and more importantly, be involved with their children

and take an active role in those activities. From now on, it will be up to the Parents to supervise and/or Drive for Youth

Nights, Outings, Fundraisers and Youth Meetings. I believe by putting the ball in their court, that they will realize they have

to take a more active approach and be involved. If no Parents step forward to fill in these roles, then that will only result in

having to hold off on Youth Activities that much longer. The progress and succession of the Youth Programs will now al-

most completely lie with the Parents and Youth participating more often, and more importantly, more committedly.

As an incentive, we may be able to provide incentives of a maximum $50 per evening/event in which they supervise for. However, in

order to become a supervisor, you must submit a Criminal Records Check and a Drivers Abstract, as well as make yourself aware of the Youth

Group Rules and other available information.

Martial Arts – Tae Kwon Do

We are holding a Martial Arts Open House/Demo on October 3rd at 5PM. It was directed to me from the Youth/

Parents Meeting that many Youth and Parents wanted this for themselves and their children. However, as we have seen this

happen in the past where the people want this or that and don’t show up for it, we will be making all Parents responsible for

a portion of the Monthly Fees (to be determined) in order to assure that their children will be attending.

The Martial Arts class will be on a trial basis for the first while. If we get good, consistent numbers out each week,

then we may look to add another day for the class. If we see the similar pattern where people show up for the first few clas-

ses, then decide never to come again, this Martial Arts class will only suffer the same fate as other programs that had to be

cancelled.

Also, it is important to know that since we have now opened up our programs to all Youth and Parents, whether

they are LFN or not. Many of the families who will be coming around, their children go to school with or know our Youth;

some have grown up with us around the community as well. It is important to make them feel welcome and respected, as

much as we would like to be respected on the same level.

Youth Centre

As with the changes and regrouping of the Youth Programs, the use and schedule of the Youth Centre will be determined once we have

seen a steady flow of attendance.

LFN Youth Night

Youth Night will re-launch on October 1st and 2nd with an Open House/Meet and Greet at 6PM on both nights.

On October 1st will be a Potluck dinner, if you plan on attending, please be courteous enough to bring something for the

dinner table.

We plan to split up the Youth Nights by ages as we did in the beginning of the Youth Program. On Mondays will

be 0-11 Years Old, and Tuesdays will be 12 Years and up. However, Mondays may eventually change and split into two sep-

arate nights as we cannot possibly have toddlers playing with 11 Year Olds, so for now this is only a trial basis to see who

and how many turn out.

LFN Youth Meetings, LFN Youth Fundraisers, Monthly Outings

Once the attendance for October has been reviewed, Youth Meetings, Outings and Fundraisers will not take place.

When the attendance has proven to be high and steady enough, we will discuss a time to start bringing these back. However,

the organizing and participation for these activities will be entirely up to the Parents.

As for Youth Outings, if and once we have decided it is appropriate to bring them back, they will be separated for

the younger kids and older kids, so each age group will have its own separate outings. However, Youth Outings will only

take place if Youth Nights in each age group if there has been at least 3 Youth Nights with 10 or more Youth. If we cannot

get at least 10 Youth to their designated Youth Nights, that age group will not have a Youth Outing for that selected month.

This way, it encourages the Parents be more involved and bring their kids down, as well as encourages the Youth to bring a

friend along to Youth Night.
