THE ORDER FOR MORNING PRAYER

PRELUDE Arabesque L. Vierne

A chime is struck, and the people stand.

OPENING HYMN 90 He is risen, he is risen! (standing) Neander

3. Come, with high and holy hymning, / Chant our Lord’s triumphant lay;

Not one darksome cloud is dimming / Yonder glorious morning ray,

Breaking o’er the purple east, / Symbol of our Easter feast.

4. He is risen, he is risen! / He hath opened heaven’s gate:

We are free from sin’s dark prison, / Risen to a holier state;

And a brighter Easter beam / On our longing eyes shall stream.

Words: Cecil Francis Alexander, 1846, alt. Music: Joachim Neander, 1680.

OPENING SENTENCE (standing)

If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is seated on the right

hand of God Colossians 3:1

CONFESSION OF SIN

Officiant: Dearly beloved brethren, the Scripture moveth us, in sundry places, to acknowledge and

confess our manifold sins and wickedness; and that we should not dissemble nor cloak them before the

face of Almighty God our heavenly Father; but confess them with an humble, lowly, penitent, and

obedient heart; to the end that we may obtain forgiveness of the same, by his infinite goodness and mercy.

And although we ought, at all times, humbly to acknowledge our sins before God; yet ought we chiefly

so to do, when we assemble and meet together to render thanks for the great benefits that we have

received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his most holy Word, and to ask those

things which are requisite and necessary, as well for the body as the soul. Wherefore I pray and beseech

you, as many as are here present, to accompany me with a pure heart, and humble voice, unto the throne

of the heavenly grace, meekly kneeling upon your knees.

A pause for self-examination is observed. All then say this Confession, devoutly kneeling.

Almighty and most merciful Father; We have erred, and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep. We

have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against thy

holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those

things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us. But thou, O Lord, have mercy

upon us, miserable offenders. Spare thou those, O God, who confess their faults. Restore thou those

who are penitent; According to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesus our Lord. And

grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake; That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and

sober life, To the glory of thy holy Name. Amen.

The Priest alone stands, the People still kneeling, and declares God’s forgiveness.

Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who desireth not the death of a sinner, but rather that

he may turn from his wickedness and live, hath given power, and commandment, to his Ministers, to

declare and pronounce to his people, being penitent, the Absolution and Remission of their sins. He

pardoneth and absolveth all those who truly repent, and unfeignedly believe his holy Gospel. Wherefore

let us beseech him to grant us true repentance, and his Holy Spirit, that those things may please him

which we do at this present; and that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure and holy; so that at the last

we may come to his eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

INVITATORY AND PSALTER

People: O Lord, make haste to help us. Psalm 70:1

PSALM 57 (standing, read responsively) BCP, p. 409

1 Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me;

for my soul trusteth in thee; *

and under the shadow of thy wings shall be my refuge,

until this tyranny be overpast.

6

2 I will call unto the Most High God, *

even unto the God that shall perform the cause which I have in hand.

3 He shall send from heaven, *

and save me from the reproof of him that would eat me up.

4 God shall send forth his mercy and truth: *

my soul is among lions;

5 And I lie even among the children of men that are set on fire, *

whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.

6 Set up thyself, O God, above the heavens; *

and thy glory above all the earth.

7 They have laid a net for my feet, and pressed down my soul; *

they have dug a pit before me,

and are fallen into the midst of it themselves.

8 My heart is fixed O God, my heart is fixed; *

I will sing and give praise.

9 Awake up my glory; awake lute and harp: *

I myself will awake right early.

10 I will give thanks unto thee O Lord among the peoples; *

and I will sing unto thee among the nations.

11 For the greatness of thy mercy reacheth unto the heavens, *

and thy truth unto the clouds.

12 Set up thyself, O God, above the heavens; *

and thy glory above all the earth.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. *

As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be;

world without end. Amen.

THE LESSONS

First Lesson (sitting) (BCP, p. 173) 1 Peter 2:11-17 11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against

the soul; 12 keeping your conduct honorable among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as

evildoers, they may behold your good works, and glorify God in the day of visitation. 13 Submit

yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; 14 or unto

governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them

that do well. 15 For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of

foolish men. 16 Live as freemen, not using your liberty for a cloak of wickedness, but as the servants of

God. 17 Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.

Reader: Here endeth the First Lesson. (There are no congregational responses after the lessons.)

Canticle Response: Te Deum laudamus (standing)

7

We praise thee O God; we acknowledge thee to be the / Lord. *

All the earth doth worship thee, the Father ever- / lasting.

To thee all Angels cry aloud; the heavens and all the powers there- / in; *

To thee Cherubim and Seraphim continually do / cry,

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Saba- / oth; *

Heaven and earth are full of the Majesty of thy / glory.

The glorious company of the Apostles / praise thee. *

The goodly fellowship of the Prophets / praise thee.

The noble army of Martyrs / praise thee. *

The holy Church throughout all the world doth ac- / knowledge thee;

The Father of an infinite Majesty; Thine adorable, true and only / Son; *

Also the Holy Ghost, the / Comforter.

Thou art the King of Glory O / Christ. *

Thou art the everlasting Son of the / Father.

When thou tookest upon thee to deliver / man, *

thou didst humble thyself to be born of a / Virgin.

When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of / death *

thou didst open the kingdom of heaven to all be- / lievers.

Thou sittest at the right hand of God in the glory of the / Father. *

We believe that thou shalt come to be our / Judge.

We therefore pray thee, help thy / servants, *

whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious / blood.

Make them to be numbered with thy / Saints, *

in glory ever- / lasting.

O Lord, save thy people and bless thine / heritage. *

Govern them and lift them up for / ever.

Day by day we / magnify thee; *

And we worship thy Name ever, world without / end.

Vouchsafe O Lord, to keep us this day without / sin. *

O Lord have mercy upon us, have mercy up- / on us.

O Lord let thy mercy be upon us, as our trust is in / thee.*

O Lord in thee have I trusted; let me never be con- / founded.

Second Lesson (sitting) (BCP, p. 173) John 16:16-22 16 Jesus said to his disciples, “A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall

see me, because I go to the Father.” 17 Then said some of his disciples among themselves, “What is this

that he saith unto us, ‘A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see

me:’ and, ‘Because I go to the Father?’” 18 They said therefore, “What is this that he saith, ‘A little while?’

we cannot tell what he saith.” 19 Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them,

“Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, ‘A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?’ 20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world

shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. 21 A woman when she

is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she

remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world. 22 And ye now therefore have

sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.”

Reader: Here endeth the Second Lesson.

The Collects (kneeling)

Collect for the Day (BCP, p. 173) Third Sunday after Easter

Almighty God, who showest to them that are in error the light of thy truth, to the intent that they may

return into the way of righteousness; Grant unto all those who are admitted into the fellowship of Christ’s

Religion, that they may avoid those things that are contrary to their profession, and follow all such things

as are agreeable to the same; through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Collect for Sundays

O God our King, who by the resurrection of thy Son on the first day of the week, didst conquer sin, put

death to flight, and give us hope of everlasting life: Redeem all our days by this victory, forgive us our

sins, banish our fears, make us bold to praise thee and to do thy will; and strengthen us to wait for the

consummation of thy kingdom on the last great Day, through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Collect for Grace

O Lord, our heavenly Father, Almighty and everlasting God, who hast safely brought us to the beginning

of this day; Defend us in the same with thy mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin,

neither run into any kind of danger; but that all our doings, being ordered by thy governance, may be

righteous in thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

HYMN 396 The church’s one foundation (standing) Aurelia

1. The Church’s one foundation / Is Jesus Christ her Lord;

She is his new creation / By water and the word:

From heav’n he came and sought her / To be his holy bride;

With his own blood he bought her, / And for her life he died.

2. Elect from ev’ry nation, / Yet one o’er all the earth,

Her charter of salvation, / One Lord, one faith, one birth;

Only holy Name she blesses, / Partakes one holy food,

And to one hope she presses, / With ev’ry grace endued.

3. Though with a scornful wonder / Men see her sore opprest,

By schisms rent asunder, / By heresies distrest;

Yet saints their watch are keeping, / Their cry goes up, “How long?”

And soon the night of weeping / Shall be the morn of song.

4. ‘Mid toil and tribulation, / And tumult of her war

She waits the consummation / Of peace for evermore;

Till with the vision glorious / Her longing eyes are blest,

And the great Church victorious / Shall be the Church at rest.

5. Yet she on earth hath union / With God, the Three in One,

And mystic sweet communion / With those whose rest is won.

O happy ones and holy! / Lord, give us grace that we

Like them, the meek and lowly, / On high may dwell with thee.

Words: Samuel John Stone, 1866. Music: Samuel Sebastian Wesley, 1864.

DOXOLOGY Old Hundredth Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below;

Praise him, above ye heavenly hosts; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

CONCLUDING PRAYERS (kneeling)

Then shall the Officiant say Collects for Civil Authorities, for a Time of Great Sickness, and for Trustfulness

in a Time of Worry, after each of which the People respond: Amen.

Then shall follow a period of silence for the People to offer their own intercessions.

A General Thanksgiving

Officiant: Let us pray.

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we, thine unworthy servants, do give thee most humble and

hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us, and to all men. We bless thee for our

creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all, for thine inestimable love in

the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of

glory. And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be

unfeignedly thankful: and that we show forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives,

by giving up ourselves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all

our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honour

and glory, world without end. Amen.

11

Prayer of St. John Chrysostom

Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplications

unto thee; and dost promise that when two or three are gathered together in thy Name thou wilt grant

their requests; Fulfil now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants, as may be most expedient

for them; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting.

Amen.

PASCHAL BLESSING (standing) Hebrews 13:20,21 May the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep,

through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect in every good work to do his will,

working in you that which is well-pleasing in his sight: And the Blessing of God Almighty, the Father,

the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be amongst you, and remain with you always. Amen.

CLOSING HYMN 347.2 Alleluia, sing to Jesus! (standing) Hyfrydol

1. Alleluia! sing to Jesus! / His the scepter, his the throne;

Alleluia! his the triumph, / His the victory alone;

Hark! the songs of peaceful Sion / Thunder like a mighty flood;

Jesus out of ev’ry nation / Hath redeemed us by his blood.

2. Alleluia! not as orphans / Are we left in sorrow now;

Alleluia! he is near us, / Faith believes, nor questions how:

Though the cloud from sight received him, / When the forty days were o’er

Shall our hearts forget his promise, / “I am with you ever more”?

3. Alleluia! Bread of Heaven, / Thou on earth our food, our stay!

Alleluia! here the sinful / Flee to thee from day to day:

Intercessor, friend of sinners, / Earth’s Redeemer, plead for me,

Where the songs of all the sinless / Sweep across the crystal sea.

4. Alleluia! King eternal, / Thee the Lord of lords we own;

Alleluia! born of Mary, / Earth thy footstool, heav’n thy throne;

Thou within the veil hast entered, / Robed in flesh, our great High Priest:

Thou on earth both Priest and Victim / In the Eucharistic feast.

5. Alleluia! sing the Jesus! / His the scepter, his the throne;

Alleluia! his the triumph, / His the victory alone;

Hark! the songs of holy Sion / Thunder like a mighty flood;

Jesus out of ev’ry nation / Hath redeemed us by his blood.

Words: F. Bland Tucker, 1938; Music: Charles Villiers Stanford, 1904.
