HIGH LINE AND FRIENDS OF THE HIGH LINEThe High Line is an elevated freight rail line transformed into a public park on Manhattan’s West Side. It is owned by the City of New York, and maintained and operated by Friends of the High Line.
Founded in 1999 by community residents, Friends of the High Line fought for the High Line’s preservation and transformation at a time when the historic structure was under the threat of demolition. It is now the non- profit conservancy working with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation to make sure the High Line is maintained as an extraordinary public space for all visitors to enjoy.
In addition to overseeing maintenance, operations, and public programming for the park, Friends of the High Line works to raise the essential private funds to support more than 90 percent of the park’s annual operating budget, and to advocate for the transformation of the High Line at the Rail Yards, the third and northernmost section of the historic structure, which runs between West 30th and West 34th Streets.
HIGH LINE MEMBERSHIPFriends of the High Line is the non-profit conservancy responsible for maintaining an extraordinary public space on the High Line. Membership is a vital source of general support for the High Line. With help from members, we are able to offer a wide range of free, innovative programs for visitors of all ages and interests. Additionally, membership helps Friends of the High Line provide virtually all of the park’s operating budget each year, allowing us to hire staff who keep the park welcoming and the plantings vibrant.
Visit www.thehighline.org to become a member today.
HIGH LINE PROGRAMSThrough its free tours, workshops, field trips, and festivals, Friends of the High Line offers opportunities for families, teens, and adults to explore contemporary arts, horticulture, and urban preservation, creating innovative experiences that highlight the distinctiveness of the park.
HIGH LINE ARTFriends of the High Line commissions and produces site-specific artworks, exhibitions, performances, video and film projections, and a series of billboard interventions as part of High Line Art, a program that invites artists to create work that responds to the High Line in a unique way.
HOURSThe High Line is open daily. Hours vary by season. Visit www.thehighline.org or follow @highlinenyc on Twitter for the latest park information.
