SOMERSET COLLEGE T20 CRICKET FESTIVALThe annual Somerset College T20 was held on Sunday 15 February with Wynberg, Rondebosch and Paul Roos joining Somerset College as participants.

The first fixtures were Somerset College against neighbours Paul Roos, and Rondebosch took on Wynberg.Somerset College batted first and scored a sedate 118 for 6 in their 20 overs. Paul Roos were restricted to 113 for 8. Somerset College won by 5 runs and moved on to the final.

In the other playoff game Wynberg scored 160 for 8, Kyle Verreynne top scored with 56 not out and Daniel Moriarty bowled a very good 4 over spell of 3 wickets for 8 runs.

In the 3rd / 4th playoff game Wynberg played Paul Roos. Wynberg batted first and the fireworks started from the first over. Wynberg got to a mammoth 272 for 3.

In the final, Rondebosch won the toss and elected to bat first. After some tight bowling and sharp fielding Rondebosch scored 133 for 5 wickets, Murray Commins scored 56 and Gavin Kaplan 44. In their chase Somerset College came up against some accurate spin bowling and some fierce fast bowling to be 39 for 4 after 9 overs.

Crazy about calamari Calamari makes my mouth very happy. My first introduction to this delicacy occurred in the home of a childhood friend whose Greek parents prepared it for us. Im glad I never got to see it in its raw state then, as all the ink might have put young me off and I would never have known how great calamari could be.

SUMMER SQUID Serves 4-5 500g Breco Squid Tubes

sliced into paper-thin tubes Flour for dusting Salt to taste Cayenne pepper (optional) Oil for frying

Season the flour with a little salt and cayenne pepper, and dust the calamari tubes with the flour. Heat some oil in a frying pan and fry the calamari in small batches until just-cooked. Stir the calamari into the salad ingredients (see below).

Serving suggestionWhy not make a summer squid salad?For this, you will need: cup very thinly sliced

fennel bulb

2 tbsp. finely chopped fennel fronds (leaves)

2 tsp. lemon zest 1 tbsp. chopped dill 3 tbsp. chopped fresh

parsley 1 red pepper, diced 1 red chilli, finely chopped 2 long ribs of celery, thinly

sliced 2 tbsp. chopped capers 2 cloves crushed garlic cup lemon juice cup olive oil Salt and pepper to

taste

Mix all the ingredients together and add the calamari. Let the salad rest for 30 minutes before serving.

PRESTIGE-DRIEHOEKATLETIEKPaul Roos Gimnasium is op 2 Maart 2015 150 jaar oud. Die skool het sy 150ste jaar op 2 Maart afgeskop deur vir elke seun n herdenkingsdas te oorhandig.

As deel van die Stellenbosch-woordfees het agt bekende pianiste op agt klaviere n uitvoering in die skool se Sentrum gehou.

Nicholas Quenet from Paul Roos Gimnasium has been crowned as SA Junior Triathlon Champion, and Ruderick Heuer, also from Paul Roos, won the Junior section of the Cape Town Cycle Tour held on 8 March.

Die gesamentlike span van Paul Roos Gimnasium en die Hor Meisieskool Bloemhof (beter bekend as BloemRoos) het op 11 Februarie daarvoor gesorg dat di gevreesde kombinasie die Prestige-Driehoekatletiekbyeenkoms in die Paarl vir die derde agtereenvolgende jaar wen. Die ander twee deelnemende spanne was n gekombineerde span van Paarl Boishaai en die Hor Meisieskool Paarl, en die Horskool Paarl Gimnasium.

GOLD AT THE AFRICA YOUTH GAMES

TENNIS BOLAND INTERPRO TEAMInge Weidemann and Kiara Noades both competed in the

National Grand Prix Swimming Championships that took place on the weekend of 14 February at the new Maties swimming pool.

This year we have players in the Boland Interpro Team. Only four girls get to play this tournament as a team. Cindy Dorrington and Sinazo Solani will represent Boland in the U18 team and, at number 1 in the U15 Boland team, will be Megan Lombardi. Elmarie Swanepoel, who is newcomer to the team this year, also made the Boland team at number 7.

Kaitlyn Sparks

Matric learner, Kaitlyn Sparks, has just won Gold at the Africa Youth Games being conducted in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Kaitlyn is a pole vaulter of some renown and has held the SA record in her age group for some years. Kaitlyn travelled to Addis Ababa as part of the South African Youth team and on Thursday afternoon, vaulted her way to the Gold Medal and the title of Africa Youth Champion.

HHH 85TH BIRTHDAYDie Horskool Hottentots-Holland het op 12 Februarie verjaar. Om hierdie geleentheid te vier, het die personeel en leerders n verjaardagpartytjie by die skool gehou. Die leerders het aan verskillende kompetisies deelgeneem, bv. koekversiering, boeresport, swem, sokker en dans. Die graad 8E, graad 9h, graad 10b, graad 11h en graad 12b klasse se koeke het die pryse vir die beste versierde koeke gewen. Robin Coetzee enjoyed himself during the HHH 85th birthday party. He is not only an athlete, but he is an excellent dancer too!

Die volgende atlete is in die Boland-Atletiekspan opgeneem. Hulle neem 13 en 14 Maart deel aan die Wes-Kaap Kampioenskappe op Coetzenburg.

Horskool Stellenbosch se 0/19 krieketspan het n puik oorwinning behaal oor Montana by die jaarlikse Interskole-kragmeting. Montana moes 180 lopies jaag, maar hulle kon nie die mas opkom teen die vinnige boulers van HS Stellenbosch nie. In n goeie spanpoging wen HS Stellenbosch met 118 lopies.

By die afgelope Boland Sentraal proewe het Elize Hoffmann as 0/16 dogter, n silwer medalje verower in die dogters ope afdeling. Henk van der Merwe en Riyaan Jordaan 0/20 het ook deurgedring om deel te neem aan die Boland prestige skaak toernooi.

Horskool Stellenbosch het deelgeneem aan die Tjaart Vorster tennistoernooi wat jaarliks deur Marlow Landbouskool op Cradock aangebied word.Ons eerste spanne het gekompeteer teen skole van reg oor die land en ten spyte van die lugdruk verskil en uitmergelende hitte het die dogters die Victoria Hotel-wisseltrofee vir n tweede opeenvolgende jaar verower en die seuns het n trotse vierde plek behaal.Eunice Rohlandt, Lizelle Kirsten, Rossouw Norval en Zaldi Steenkamp is ook genomineer as spelers wat met goeie sportmansgees kompeteer. Al ons spelers kan trots wees of ons goeie prestasie en uitstaande gedrag!

EERSTE TENNISSPAN Bloemhof se eerste tennisspan het die afgelope week (18 21 Februarie) saam met 12 van die sterkste spanne aan die Gerrie Berner Toernooi in die Paarl deelgeneem. In die uitdunrondtes het Bloemhof afgereken met HMS Paarl (27-0) en Eunice van Bloemfontein (27-0) om sodoende as wenners van hulle groep te eindig. Die 4 skole wat elk hulle groepe gewen het (Bloemhof, Oranje, Stellenbosch en Rhenish), het toe sake uitgespook in die finale rondomtalie. Nadat Bloemhof die knie moes buig voor Oranje (6-21) het die spelers goed teruggeveg teen Rhenish (22-5) en Stellenbosch (18-9) om die silwer medaljes te verower. Die finale puntestand:

was die enigste nr 1-speler wat al haar wedstryde by die toernooi gewen het.

JAARLIKSE GHOLFDAG Bloemhof se jaarlikse gholfdag by De Zalze is die skool se grootste fondsinsamelingsgeleentheid en geen moeite word ontsien om die dag vir almal wat betrokke is baie spesiaal te maak nie. Daar was ook, soos in die verlede, n Boule-toernooi aangebied en di deelnemers het net soveel pret soos die gholfers gehad. Baie dankie aan die hoofborg, ENSafrica en Simonsig wat die boule geborg het, asook elke individuele borg en donateur. Sonder almal se ruim skenkings sou die dag nie moontlik gewees nie. Dit is met di fokus dat Parel Vallei verenig gestaan het as skool tydens die jaarlikse Interskole-atletiekbyeenkoms wat op 16 Februarie plaasgevind het teen Horskool Strand en die Horskool Hottentots-Holland. AL die Parel Valleiers het net weerens bewys wat vermag kan word wanneer ons skool saamstaan en elkeen bydra tot n groter doelwit as net sy eie. Dankie aan ons mededingers vir die strawwe kompetisie

INTER- SCHOOLS SWIMMING AGAINST SOMERSET COLLEGE

On the 24th of February, the Parel Vallei swimming team once again showed Somerset College what they are made of! PVs boys beat SC by 51 points and PVs girls by 22 points, earning PV the first place by 73 points!

Other swimming results:Boland Schools Twilight Swimming Gala, Malmesbury:17 schools participated in this competition and in the female category Parel Vallei

was placed second to Paarl Girls High.In the male category, Parel Vallei came third to Boishaai and Paarl Gim.For the past two years Paarl Gim accepted the Combined Co-ed section trophy at this event, but this year the trophy has a new home in Parel Vallei road! Sanlam Cape Mile: New to this competition, Parel Valleis swimmers also made their mark by winning the award for the first 4 male and female swimmers from a school to complete the mile!

Two months ago, De Villiers underwent a full reconstruction of the anterior and posterior cruciate knee ligaments with an artificial graft, as well as a repair of the medial collateral knee ligament. In simple terms, he had a full knee reconstruction. According to dr Jacques Snyman, this is fairly serious surgery that could be expected to put the rugby player out of commission for

approximately eight months. De Villiers noted that he is

very fortunate to have supportive infrastructures at both the Springboks and the Stormers to help him recover from injuries and perform at optimal levels. In this case, I still needed surgery to repair the damage to my knee, and it really helped knowing I had a

supportive and understanding medical scheme in my corner.

Recovery after major knee surgery is a slow and careful process requiring input from the orthopaedic surgeon, physical therapist, chiropractor, and trainer who know your abilities and can advise you accordingly, he explained.

Dr Snyman explains the usual stages of recovery one may expect after major knee surgery:Post-surgeryAfter serious knee surgery, your orthopaedic surgeon will usually evaluate any swelling and pain, your muscle activation patterns, and the range of motion of your knee (as well as that of your hip, ankle and lumbar spine). Every joint should function properly so that there is no added stress placed on the knee.

The first two weeksDecreasing the swelling and reaching full passive range of motion is very important in the first few weeks after surgery. Treatment options and programmes may include

icing the area regularly and working the range of motion between icing sessions. Adhering to these programmes is crucial to recovery.

Start doing weight-bearing exercisesOnce you have achieved a full range of motion, you can start doing supervised weight-bearing exercises, which may include squats and lunges to strengthen the knee and ligaments.Having knee surgery is most certainly a humbling experience that teaches you not to take your health for granted, said De Villiers. My body is pivotal to my career, but injuries do happen especially in a sport like rugby. Injuries are part of life; you just have to accept them, listen to your doctor and medical specialists, and work hard to recover.

At this stage, its difficult to determine how long Ill be out of action. In all likelihood, it will be for about eight months, but I am doing everything I can to fast-track my recovery. I am also trying to keep fit by doing some low-intensity cycling and swimming.

The time-out has also given me the perfect opportunity to bond with my baby, Luka, the newest addition to our family.

GREEN BUSINESS AWARD COMPETITIONBeaumont Primary School were runners up in the Green Business Award Competition. The school has a very successful recycling drive. Beaumont has also been awarded their Eco-School Platinum Award by WESSA.

BIG BARN BASH AT BEAUMONTOn Saturday, 6 February 2015, parents and children of Beaumont Primary School, as well as their family and friends, had loads of fun at the Big Barn Bash. The dance was organised as a fundraiser by the parents of the 27 learners who will be going on a cultural tour to Singapore from 17 25 July this year. Learners from South Africa, Singapore, Malaysia and Hong

Kong will be taking part in a musical called We Know The World. The learners from Beaumont Primary School and Overberg Primary School will be representing South Africa. This will be a very special occasion as Singapore will be celebrating its 50th anniversary. Beaumont is also celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP DAYThe Grade 6 learners had a lot of fun at their Entrepreneurship Day. The whole school enjoyed the shopping experience.

Keagen Smith het die meeste punte tydens die kleure-atletiekbyeenkoms ingepalm. Hy is aangewys as die beste atleet van die dag.

Lochies vat behoorlik vlam met Wiskundeweek. Ons tel in graad 4 in veelvoude op ons pragtige strikdasse.
