SIR LOWRY’s

Sir Lowry’s Pass was settled as a resting place for travellers before commencing ascent of the Gantouw mountain by ox wagons. The Gantouw was replaced by the opening of Sir Lowry’s Pass on 6 July 1830. Sir Lowry Cole travelled up the new-ly constructed Pass in a Cape cart pulled by two horses. This pass was an impor-tant advance in the field of transport.

There was a Post Office as early as 1846. In 1847 a Wesleyan Chapel was built on the farm Myrtle Grove. This chapel still stands and is now reportedly the oldest Wesleyan Chapel in the country. Wild flow-ers grew in profusion on the mountains and hills around the village and was a major source of income for the villagers in the early 1900’s.

MACASSAR

Macassar was first known as Simon van der Stel’s Zandvliet Farm. In 1683 the influential military and religious leader Sjeik Yusuf arrives in the Cape after being banned from Java. Yusuf and his follow-ing of 48 arrived on the De Voetboog and later settled at the river-mouth where the Eersteriver flows into False Bay.

In 1964 the area was earmarked for group housing and in 1967 the Zandvliet Farm was sold for housing. Many of the informal houses (shacks) in this area are now being replaced with low cost housing for needy families.

HOTTENTOTS HOLLAND MOUNTAINS & GANTOUW PASS.

The Hottentots Holland Kloof would have been a focal point for any eastward traveller from Cape Town. The passage on both sides was treacherous for draught animals and wagons alike.

Although the pass was difficult to traverse, the appeal of the open, rolling land that lies to the east of the Hottentots Holland mountains made the effort worth while to farmers and graziers who required ever increasing amounts of land.

The indigenous Khoikhoi called the pass connecting the Cape District and the Overberg Gantouw or “Elands Path”. It was used as a regular migration route by wild game, hunters, and the pastoralist Khoikhoi prior to the arrival of European settlers.

Well travelled by Europeans in the last quarter of the eighteenth century, the pass was a well-known landmark to locals and visitors. In 1830 the Gantouw was replaced by the opening of Sir Lowry’s Pass.

The Strandlopers (literally ‘beach comb-ers’) were the only inhabitants of Table Bay and the surrounding areas when Jan van Riebeeck, an employee of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), landed at the Cape in 1652.

In 1655 the first expedition to the east of the Fort at Cape Town was launched, climbing the dauntingly steep mountains above present-day Gordon’s Bay. The then governor of the Cape, WA van der Stel, acquired as much land as possible and named his farm Vergelegen, where he lived until his recall to the Netherlands in 1708.

SOMERSET WEST

Somerset West is named after the Brit-ish Governor, Lord Charles Somerset. In 1817 four farmers, who owned different parts of Vergelegen, asked the governor for permission to build a church and a vil-lage around it.

Permission was granted and the village was named “Somerset”. But there was confusion with the town of Somerset East and therefore in 1850 the name was changed to Somerset West.

STRAND

This is where the coloured and Malay fishermen settled and the fishing village

of Mostert’s Bay developed, some 300 years ago. Corporal Muller and eight sol-diers from the Dutch East India Company were commissioned to explore further. They discovered the now famous white sandy beaches of Melkbaai (Milk Bay) – Strand.

This little fishing village’s name changed several times. Finally in 1937 it became Strand. The Strand is situated on the shores of the False Bay Coast, at the foot of the Hottentots Holland mountain range.

The Strand is the oldest holiday destina-tion on the Western Cape Coastline. It’s also one of the most popular.

GORDON’S BAY

Gordon’s Bay was named after Robert Ja-cob Gordon, a Dutch military officer who commanded the Cape garrison in the lat-ter part of the 18th century.

Today this picturesque town is home to the South African Naval College and its sheltered harbours play host to numerous regattas and other yachting and angling events.

Gordon’s Bay combines the flavour of an international resort with the charm of an old-style coastal town. In summer the nar-row streets and bustling beachfront come
