The Broadlands Village Street Patrol and Broadlands Village Community Watch recently joined forces to combatcrime in their residential area. Johannes Pick, chairperson of the watch and residents association, says crimehas decreased since they started patrolling the area. In the last two months these two organisations confiscateda number of knives, dagga pipes, tik and other weapons (see photograph). Pick says because of their visibility, the area has become more peaceful and potential buyers are showing an interest in available housesin the area again. Pick is positive about the good relationship the organisations have with the LwandlePolice and proudly mentioned that at a recent community police forum meeting the station commanderLt Col Siviwe Somtsewu commended the good work of their organisations. Above are some of the memberswith confiscated items. They are (back from left) Nicky Petersen, Johannes Pick (chairperson), Randall Scholtzand Conan Morris; front: Faeez Rhoda, Shannon Swail and Harcourt Jooste (security supervisor BVSP).

Loudspeakers on mosque roof cause concernLoudspeakers on mosque roof cause concernYou have the right to be concerned about thenoise that will be heard from the mosque. I’mreading everyone’s response “not respectingother’s religion”, “the loudhailers tobe turneddown”, etc.

I reside inMacassar andwe first complainedof the noise from the mosque in 2010/11. It isnow2014andI’mstill complainingwithoutsuc-cess.

People who initially supported me becametired and afraid of intimidation. I was verballyattacked and threatened on Facebook after theimam told his members about “this womanthathasaproblemwith theirreligion”, insteadofbeinghonestwith themandtelling themthatwe wanted a meeting with him about the loudvolume. He ignored us, he ignored warningsfrom Law Enforcement and paid the R500 fine, but continued with the loud cry to prayer inthe early morning hours.

The complaint was also front page news intheHelderbergGazette a few years ago but thatdidn’t stop him.

The Environmental Health department sentout an official to Macassar to investigate andit was found that noise levels were too high. The imam was asked to lower the volume. Fora few months it was quiet and peaceful in Ma-cassar, but that was short-lived.

There’s a season where you are brutallyawakened at 04:00 andwith that goes the soundof dogshowling.Earplugsdon’twork, pressingyour fingers inyourearsdoesn’twork, theonlything thatworks isputtingyourradioor televi-

sion on full volume to block out the noise andthen toss and turn inyourbeduntil youralarmgoes off.

“Not respecting other religions” goes forboth sides. I should have a choice not to listento your prayer calling but instead it’s enforcedon me.

It was said at the municipal office when ap-plying foraplot tobuildachurchbuilding, thatthe building has to be sound proof because itwill be situated ina residential areawhichwasabided to.

I do not understand that the mosque is alsoin a residential area but that they are allowedfive big speakers on the roof top, it does notmake sense!

When asked about this issue Nabeweya Mal-ick (public relationsofficerof theMuslimJudi-cialCouncil) saidshewasnotawareof thecom-plaint. She also said that it was not necessaryfor the prayer calling, their members couldmake use of their alarms.

A few months ago I asked her on WhatsAppfor her email address where I could inform herin detail about the same process that I wasabout to start again, because the imam startedup with the noise again. She never responded.

I also made an appointment with councillorJohn Heuvel then for advice or to forward mycomplaint to a department where the situationcould be dealt with before I eventually wentto the law enforcement and later the newspa-per.Nothing cameof it. I never gotmyappoint-ment so I had to turn to the law. There can bea mosque on every street corner, but thoseloudspeakers are the issue. Is there any officialthat can speak to the Macassar imam please?

Elections really fair?Elections really fair?Inmy country of origin (Belgium) one canvotein different ways: either on top of a party’s list,i.e. one agrees with the under-appearing listof candidates; either alongside of a proposedcandidate... one can also vote at the base of thelist to show that onevotes for the party but thatone disagrees with their list of candidates.

Anyway, the list of candidates is clearlyshown, and one can interact with the list byvoting preferentially behind a candidate, thereby eliminating one that didn’t perform orwith who’s candidature one disagrees... and inSA? Is it in the interest of the parties here?

A secondpoint is the free or compulsorywayof voting; it is compulsory for every citizen inBelgium; this allows for a real appreciation ofthe votes. In most other countries the votingprocess is free... with the result that if one hase.g. 50% of the people voting and a candidateis elected by 50% of those votes, he/she is infact elected by 25% of the population (i.e. 1/4),which is unacceptable but accepted! It hap-pened in the USA...

The last point, is the secrecy of the votingprocess. Not one party in SA is insisting on thefact that nobody can interfere or is informedabout your vote, meaning that, for uninformedpeople, intimidation is a daily fact. I agree thatit isnot provenbecause it is a “hear-say” thing, but it is adaily reality and it falsifies thevotingprocess.

This can only be eradicated if all parties pro-claim openly and repeatedly that the voting issecret and that intimidation cannot be done. But this is not in the interest of the politicalparties, hence.

Makes one think about our freedom and de-mocracy and free and fair elections.
