Shanice conquers GermanyTAMSYN JANTJIES

A local songbird has showcased her amaz-ing voice and talents on the internationalstage.

Strand resident Shanice Miles travelled toGermany as part of the Cape Town Children’sChoir in December. Kids for Africa invited thelocal choir to perform in four concerts in aidof theRedCrossWarMemorialChildren’sHos-pital.Shanice has been singing since the tender

age of nine and lends her voice to both the chil-dren’s andadult choirsatStrandGustrowNewApostolic Church. And the musical 14-year-old also plays in-

struments. “I’ve been playing the recorder forsome time now,” she says while sitting on asingle-seater in her parents’ lounge.‘‘This year, I am going to start playing the

violin. In fact, I have already started with it.’’Oneof fourdaughters, she just startedGrade

9 at Strand Secondary School.Shanice may not be a tall girl, but her size

doesn’t hamper the size of her personality anddreams, or weight of her presence in thelounge. “I love singing, butwhen Imatriculate,Iwant tostudytourism; I love travelling. Iwanttoexploreand learnmoreaboutasmanyplacesand people as I can,” she says.“I just love learning about and experiencing

new cultures.”Shanice was a member of the Cape Town

Children’s Choir for four years; last year washer last year as part of the prestigious choir. The choir spent two weeks travelling, per-

forming and raising funds in Germany. “Icouldn’t have asked for a better ending to thisjourney,” Shanice concludes.ThechoirraisedR1,2mfor theRedCrossWar

Memorial Children’s Hospital during the trip.

Shanice Miles is naturally musical. She sings, playsthe recorder and is learning to play the violin.

She is a shy, yet confident young woman with a zestfor life. PHOTOS: TAMSYN JANTJIES

My werkhou my besig en party aandenáwerkhet ek vergaderingsmetdie kerkraad. Basies is ek indi-rek betrokke by liefdadigheid, want ons kerkraad reël baieveldtogte vir minderbevoorreg-tes.

Neville Loggenberg: Ek dink niemense is bewus van al die ver-skillende welsynsorganisasiesnie. Mens hoor weinig mensepraat daarvan. Ek is wel betrok-ke by ’n liefdadigheidsorgani-sasie.

Antony Mapfurire: I really am notaware of any NPO in the area. Iwould love to be a part of some-thing, if I just knew about it.

Ek is wel betrokkeby so ’n organisasie.

Samantha van der Merwe: Iused to be a member of a com-munity charity organisation butleft when I found out that themoney being raised just wentmissing. At themoment, I’mnotaware of any other similar pro-jects in the Helderberg. I’d defi-nitely like to get involved withsome community projectsagain.

Useful fire safety tipsFires are a frequent occurrence in CapeTown, particularly during the hot, windysummer months.

Therefore, the City of Cape Town is con-stantly seeking to create awareness aroundfire safety, frequently embarking on drives toeducate communities on preventative meas-ures which will reduce the risk and numberof fires. The City is reaching out to communities

and appealing to residents to workwith themto bring an end to preventable fires and theunnecessary loss of life and property.Residents can do this by taking note of the

following fire safety tips:. Keep a close eye on paraffin stoves. Don’t

cook near a window with a curtain..Make sure the stove doesn’t fall over, as

it may burn children or cause a fire..Make sure candles are secure and cannot

fall over. Do not go to sleep while the candles

are still burning.. Teach children about the dangers of fire.. Dispose of cigarette butts safely.. Be aware of the dangers of illegal and

faulty electricity connections, which cancause fires.

. Keep a bucket handy to fill with waterto extinguish flames quickly.

. Keep a bucket of sand nearby to put outparaffin fires.

. Build dwellings a good distance (at least3 m) apart to prevent fires from spreading.Make sure this space is kept open.

. Keep roads and access to dwellings clearat all times.

. Donotblockroadswithpossessionswhenthere is a fire.

. Do not prevent or disrupt the work ofcrews fighting fires. To report a fire or any other emergency,
