ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENTHashoo Foundation's economic development programs aim to achieve greater financial independence and self-reliance of individuals, families, and communities. Partnering with communities at the grass root level and exploring issues of socio-economic development, our economic development programs enhance the basic earning capacity of the community partners while improving access to existing health, education, and nutrition services.

Hashoo Foundation is currently implementing the following key economic development programs:

Ÿ Women Empowerment through Honey Bee Farming ProjectŸ Expanded Dairy Development ProjectŸ Marble Shine Associates

Women Empowerment through Honey Bee Farming Project

In 2007, the project was featured and highlighted during the poverty alleviation session at the 2007 Clinton Global Initiative. Then again in 2008, it was selected from amongst more than 1,000 organizations, as one of the four “Featured Commitments “on the CGI website during its Annual Meeting.

This initiative was started in collaboration with the University of St. Thomas Micro Credit Program (UST-MCP), Owl Micro Finance (a non-profit organization run by students from Rice University), and the Micro Finance Initiative at the University of Houston (MFI-UH). CED supports the expansion of Hashoo Foundation's Women Empowerment through Honey Bee Farming Project in terms of scale as well as outreach and greater geographic coverage.

Under this initiative, UST-MCP, OMF and MFI-UH have provided a revolving fund for microloans to the women beekeepers of Gilgit and Chitral. Baseline surveys were conducted to identify beneficiaries, provided with loans based on the Group Lending Methodology (GLM), similar to a hybrid of Grameen Bank and BRAC models of Bangladesh.

Clinton Global Initiative (CGI)

The Women Empowerment through Honey Bee Farming Project was initiated to empower women in the Northern and other areas of Pakistan by expanding employment opportunities and generating a stable source of income through the sale of high-quality honey. The project addresses the discrepancy between the income earned by male and female beekeepers by educating the women in beekeeping and linking them to profitable markets. Furthermore, the project improves the status of women in their communities, as they become more integrated in the decision-making process within male-dominated societies.

The project is based on a system of social barter, designed to promote social change. HF agrees to buy the women beekeepers' honey at market price and successfully links them to the lucrative markets of 5-star hotels in Pakistan, provided that the families agree to send their children to quality schools, have regular health check-ups and improve nutrition at home. The project has allowed its beneficiaries to increase their income, hence, bringing a positive change in their life style.

So far, 850 women have been trained in honey bee farming which resulted in a 32 % increase in household income.

BBC World Challenge ’08 In December 2008, the project was voted the winner of the prestigious BBC World Challenge 08, among 700 organizations worldwide. World Challenge is a global competition aimed at recognizing projects that have shown enterprise and innovation at the grass root level. It was organized by BBC World News and Newsweek, in association with Shell.

This is the first ever project from Pakistan to be highlighted at such a forum. The prize money was utilized for buying a processing unit to increase the production capacity of honey and also to improve its branding for both local and international markets.

Page 8: Hashoo Foundation Profile 2011

Hashoo Foundation is implementing the Expanded Dairy Development Project (EDDP), funded by Church World Services (CWS-P/A) and EED, which is designed to “show and tell” the local community how to:

Ÿ Improve the breed of local cattleŸ Increase the yield of milk through better fodder and

livestock managementŸ Improve care and treatment of livestock by training

veterinary extension workersŸ Set up a chilling unit for collection of milk from farmersŸ Produce quality products like cheese, butter and yogurt

for income generation Ÿ Install and use bio-gas for heating and cooking

This project builds on the success of the “Sustainable Livelihood for Women-Headed Households” project that was implemented by Hashoo Foundation and funded by CWS-P/A and EED, where livestock was distributed amongst the earthquake affected and vulnerable population. Through this project lessons were learnt, and associations made with the livestock department that have been key to the success of the EDDP.

The third phase of the project envisages to:

Ÿ Expand EDDP to other Union CouncilsŸ Setup marketing mechanisms for the EDDP's dairy productsŸ Brand and franchise the dairy products for sales and distribution targeting the masses

EDUCATION

Scholarship Program

Hashoo Foundation's scholarship program identifies talented students who cannot afford university education, and supports them throughout their studies. This support enables them to break the poverty cycle and access better opportunities. A new policy, initiated recently, incites our scholars to contribute to the program, once they are gainfully employed after the end of their studies.

1717

Hashoo Foundation’s Education Program comprises of four sub-programs:

1 Child Education Support Program (CESP)2 Hashoo Foundation Schools (HFS) 3 Early Childhood Development Training 4 Scholarship Program

Child Education Support Program

Access to quality education is a priority for Hashoo Foundation. Since 2004, our Child Education Support Program (CESP) has contributed to improve access to quality education in some of the most isolated areas of Pakistan. Initiated in the Northern Areas, CESP provides financial support to out-of-school children. These children are identified with the help of community leaders. They are then enrolled into one of the 120 schools established by AKESP. Hashoo Foundation pays for their tuition fees and provides them with books, shoes, stationery and a uniform. The same model applies to the region of Rawalpindi.

Hashoo Foundation Schools

Hashoo Foundation also supports education facilities in the four provinces of Pakistan. The Foundation runs a network of 13 primary schools, four of which are supported by British Petroleum, under their Corporate Social Responsibility program. These schools are established in the remote and extremely poor areas where access to education – even at the primary level – is still a problem.

Early Childhood Development

Early Childhood Development (ECD) program is an innovative training program, which focuses on building the capacities of teachers to stimulate learning at a very early age. ECD involves trainees, parents and children in a holistic experience centered on the child. In a country where corporal punishment is unfortunately still commonly used in the classroom, the ECD approach employs an interactive and humane approach to teaching which involves:

Ÿ Sessions based on practical activities as well as theoryŸ Hands-on training in classroom environmentŸ Summer camps involving parents and children

Page 13: Hashoo Foundation Profile 2011

19 20SKILLS DEVELOPMENT

Hashoo Foundation's Skills Development Program is divided into three components: 1 - Vocational training 2 - Life skills training 3- Career mentoring

The Vocational Training Program aims at:

Ÿ Conducting regular market research for identification of vocational training needsŸ Organizing and conducting structured vocational trainingŸ Creating linkages between young job seekers and job markets, nationally and internationallyŸ Provision of job placement facilities through a placement cell

Life Skills Training

Hashoo Foundation initiated the Life Skills training program in 2006 to enable young Pakistani men and women to make the most of their professional competence. Life skills refer to a large group of psycho-social and interpersonal skills which can help people make informed decisions, communicate effectively, and develop self-management skills that may help them lead a healthy and productive life. These trainings are offered by the Foundation through its Human Development Resource Centers located in Rawalpindi, Chitral and Gilgit.

Career Mentoring

The Career Mentoring Program of Hashoo Foundation is a work-based mentoring and learning initiative. It seeks to provide opportunities (volunteer and internship) to graduates to assist in their development and management of career opportunities. Each student is paired up with a mentor for a period of two months for internship and one month for volunteer work. The mentors are registered for this program and matched with students with similar aspirations.

HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE AND RELIEF23 24

In the absence of State-sponsored social safety nets, vulnerable families and individuals facing temporary hardships and/or unforeseen expenditures can be easily thrown into an endless cycle of poverty. Our Humanitarian Assistance Program provides support to individuals and/or families through medical, financial and educational assistance. The objective is to enable the poorest of the poor to overcome crises before they exacerbate.

Hashoo Foundation also works for provision of emergency relief to the victims of natural and human disasters. Our work for the victims of the earthquake of 2005, the IDPs’ crisis of 2009, as well as the floods of 2010 reflects our commitment to mitigate the suffering of the disaster-struck population.

Sahara Fund

On September 20, 2008, a suicide bomb blast hit the Islamabad Marriott Hotel. The catastrophe resulted in the tragic death of over 56 people and more than 260 were injured, some to the point of disability. The delicate social/economic condition of the 600 immediate family members of the victims prompted Sarah Hashwani, Chairperson of Hashoo Foundation to launch “Sahara Fund” for these people on September 20, 2008. In addition to providing medical care for the injured, the Fund sponsors programs to help the families of the victims with their children's education, medical needs and skills training and employment until they become self-sufficient.Each family's situation was individually assessed so as to aid them in achieving the same income level they had prior to the explosion.

Hashoo Foundation (HF) Health program is divided into two components

1 - Basic Health Centers

Ÿ Real Medicine Foundation-HF Health Project Ÿ Hashoo Medical Centre Gwadar Ÿ Hassan Ali Hashwani Dispensary

2 - Spinal Cord Injury Project for Pakistan Earthquake Rehabilitation (SCIPPER)

Hashoo Foundation's emergency health relief component targets vulnerable communities, reeling from the effects of natural or man-made disasters. The Foundation began its relief activities during the catastrophic earthquake in 2005, providing relief to the earthquake affected victims through establishment of a basic health unit in Talhatta, Balakot.

The unit in Talhatta proved to be extremely successful and in the model was replicated by inaugurating Hashoo Medical Center in Gwadar, Balochistan in 2007; Hassan Ali Hashwani Dispensary in Karachi in 2008; and Basic health unit for Afghan refugees, I-12, Islamabad in 2010.

Hashoo Foundation also provided much needed relief to the IDPs of Swat by running an emergency health unit for 9 months (June 2009 – February 2010) in Charsadda, KPK.

Hashoo Foundation's Spinal Cord Injury Project for Pakistan Earthquake Rehabilitation (SCIPPER) aims at providing services to spinal cord injury (SCI) patients with educational and vocational training, peer-counseling, care giver services, mobility equipment (wheelchair, canes) and bladder care supplies like catheters. This training gives them the opportunity to learn daily skills to achieve maximum autonomy in their lives.
