NEWS FROM^ THE FIELD ~ - -

Ralph has been very busy duringthe last quarter of 1991. He hasbeen to Kulpahar on a couple of oc-assions and to Madras for the IndiaChristian Convention. Also in earlyNovember he traveled to mid-Indiafor the Hindi language convention.

The Elders at the Clinton churchhave asked for an audit of all organizations that the mission supports. Harter says that this is agood thing to do to insure thatthings are on the up-and-up. Thebooks are to be presented to Ralphfor inspection after auditing.

Victor Walter of the Swarupnagarchurch has been quite ill but hasnow recovered a great deal. Mr.Walter is the treasurer of the Kali-siya Sahayak Sanstha and since hisillness the book work has come to astand-still. We are thankful thatGod has answered many prayers on hisbehalf.

THE NEWLYWEDS GET SETTLED IN

On October 17, 1991, AmarjeetSingh and Neeru Masih were united inHoly Matrimony. The wedding tookplace in Amritsar, Punjab which isAmarjeet's hometown. Due to somescheduling difficulties, Ralph gaveup his ticket to one of Amar'sfriends (a very generous gesture).This disappointed Harter, but he wassomewhat apprehensive about thetrip. As it turned out Amar wasmore disappointed that he originallythought he might be.

After a brief honeymoon thecouple returned to Kanpur to findthat Ralph had switched their livingquarters giving the couple the larger of the two apartments (anothergenerous gesture). Ralph has grownaccustomed to the addition of Priya(Neeru) to the "family" as she is agood housekeeper and a very goodcook according to Mr. Harter.

There was to be another additionto the family recently also. A dogwas promised to them by someone inthe neighborhood as soon as it wasweaned from its mother. However,the pup died from the cold before itleft its mother. The household wassaddened by the death after they hadanticipated the arrival for someweeks.

SPEAKING OF DOGS

One day in early December, Ralphwas bitten by a vicious dog. Notmuch information is available aboutthe attack but the victim did notrequire any stitches only anti-tetanus vaccine. Harter is quotedas saying, "I don't think I haveever been so terrified".

It is not supposed to be newswhen "dog bites man" but it is newsfor us who sometimes worry about ourfriends in the field. There aremany dangers in that land or in oursfor that matter. Continue to praythat Ralph and the family are keptfrom harm.

U.S. TRIP PLANNED FOR NEWLYWEDS

The newlywed couple,'- Amar andPriya, are hoping to come to theUnited States sometime in 1992,hopefully in early summer. As yetthey have only applied for theirIndian passports and there hasn'tbeen much progress to report. Afterthe passports are obtained, then itis up to the U. S. State Dept. toissue visas into this country. Wehave no idea how long this all maytake so we haven't spread the wordmuch. Ralph, is hopeful that theywill be able to meet many of youwhile they are here. They will bestaying, for the most part, inClinton and Canal Fulton, Ohio andtraveling as much as possible tovisit those who would welcome them.

AMARJEBT SINGH ORDAINED

On April 26, 1992 AmarjeetSingh, the "Field Agent" of theClinton Church India Mission, wasordained into the full-time Christian ministry at the SwarupnagarChurch in Kanpur. This indeed was a"Red Letter" day for the Church.Amarjeet should complete his studiesfor his degree this year (his examshave been postponed until July). Heand his new bride, Neeru, reside inthe Pastorium of the Church buildingalong side Ralph's apartment. Thishas proved to be an interesting adjustment for all concerned at times,but is also a most efficient arrangement for the Church and bookstore downstairs to have them allavailable on the premises. We praythat the Lord will continue to bless

INDIA MISSION ENTERS COMPUTER AGE

On both sides of the world, theIndia Mission of the Clinton Churchhas entered into the computer age.In the U.S. since the transitionfrom Mrs. Douglas to Ken Downs asforwarding agent, the mission'sbooks have been kept on computerdisk which used the computer atKen's place of employment. Contributors have been aware of the "computer" receipts since then. Now theU.S. computer resides at Ken's houseas he has purchased a computer forhis own use (at no expense to themissionalthough the mission didbuy the software program that wasneeded). This should make all thenecessary office work more convenient. But even more noteworthy isthe fact that the Indian side of thework has obtained a computer also.This unit was donated by Ann Plett-ner and was "set-up" by Amarjeetsince Easter. We again are thankfulto the Lord for the way he providesfor us! Although the Mission hasfunctioned just fine for all theseyears without such aides, still itwill make better use of the time ofall concerned in the bookkeeping end

OTHER NEWS

By this time (May 31), Ralphshould be in Sat Tal in the mountains for his annual teaching tour inthe cooler climes of India. Thedaytime temps in Kanpur regularlyreach over 100 F at this time ofyear which is increasingly a hardship for our intrepid Harter.(After experiencing that heat firsthand, this writer knows something ofthe confining nature of this season.It is much like being restricted bya severe Ohio winter.) This respitefrom the heat is also a welcomedholiday from the day-to-day routineof Kanpur. Harter loves his workand the people of Kanpur~buL" everyone needs a break now and then.While Harter is away, the Church andbookstore are under Amarjeet'swatchful eye. This allows Harter to"relax" a bit as well as givingAmarjeet the opportunity for moreexperience in the Lord's Church.

This year's Easter celebrationproved to be quite an event. Harterwrote of the "Dawn" service held inKanpur for all the Christian Churches. He described "many thousands"in attendance at ^ ! At theSwarupnagar service 6 young peoplecame forward to express their faithand be baptized. The Good Fridayand Easter Sunday services had overflow crowds in attendance with manyseated on the floor. How many of uswould have been so eager to be inthe Lord's house under such crowdedconditions?

On February 6th, Neeru had hertonsils removed. This was a welcomed operation as they had beengiving her trouble for quite sometime. This gave her the chance tobe pampered just a little with icecream and pudding. Our opinion isthat Amarjeet probably made quite an"attentive" nurse. (He really caresfor her!)

In January we mourned the passing of Chuck Knopf, Mary's husband.Chuck died of a sudden heart attack.Mary is Ralph's cousin from Clinton

with whom Ralph stays when home onfurlough. Ralph spoke very highlyof Chuck saying "he was a good brother to me". Our prayers continueto be with Mary in her loss.

That' s just the way it seems tobe for the missionary and his family. There is no way to get word tothe other side of the world quicklyenough let alone physically travelto be with someone in their need.It should make us all thankful forthe closeness of our loved ones andnot to take for granted our opportunities for fellowship when they arepresented. Also, it makes us allmore aware of how much we must depend on the Holy Spirit for our comfort and companionship. The missionaries I have known all have akeen sense of His presence and depend on Him greatly for their verysustenance. May we all work towarda closer relationship to the Lord.

NEWS FROM AMARJEETExcerpts from his letter of March 27

Greetings from us and from Kan-pur Church of Christ. Yesterday Iwent to investigate our passport.The agent was saying it will take atleast two months more. Means inMay. But I hope it can be takenearlier if we go to the passportoffice directly that is 80 kilometers from here (in Lucknow). So,

"i^^mll continue ^o give you progressof our passport in order to arrangeyour programme of our coming. I amvery (not "very" but a little) nervous to come to USA. Because it ismy first visit out of India and wedo not know the customs of USA.People, pray for us. I hope Godwill give courage and wisdom to usand with you this nervousness andhesitation will remove soon. When Ithink back on about my life, I compare it with Moses (Exodus 4:10) asMoses I left my life in His hands."What" and "how" He wants I am andwill be ready to do His work. Ourvisit is also His wish. He wants alot of work in India. As you areaware of our country, more than 95%people are non-Christians worshipping idols.

Our friends in India are alldoing quite well at the present.Ralph Harter has reliable help inthe bookstore. Currently, Harterdoes little "hands on" managementof the store as Amarjeet Singh ishandling much of thoseresponsibilities. This set-upleaves Harter to handle theaccounts and allows more time forstudies and sermon preparation.The most recent addition to thebookstore staff is Neelu Jas, ayoung Bible College student who isquite dependable since the"disappearance" of Ford John.Ford isn't actually missing, buthas decided not to be involved inthe bookstore (without warning)!

Another bookstore employee,Joel, was involved in a tragic caraccident. Joel's wife and severalothers were killed and Joel andhis daughter are in a hospitalnear Delhi with broken bones.Please pray for this family intheir loss .

Harter had a close call in abicycle rickshaw that nearlytipped over. He had given updriving the scooter (soon afterJoel's accident) but said thatbeing a passenger is no guaranteeof being safe.

BAPTISMS

Amarjeet was used of the Lordin July to lead three young men toChrist in baptism, Amar's first.We are all thankful to God for Hisanswering our prayers on Amar'sbehalf, that he be a vessel of theGospel and will lead many toChrist from paganism. Amarjeetcontinues to work hard at hissermons and developing histeaching skills. It is gratifyingto see the results and to know thehe had a part in this. We eachcan take part in this processwhere we are, many times neverseeing the results. We mustalways remember that whoever

plants or waters,increase.

God gives the

Many guests have come and gonein the Harter/Singh householdduring the past months. Variousrelatives of both Amarjeet andNeeru have come to stay fordifferent periods of time, somefor studies at the local schools,but some just to visit. Not theleast of these visitors wasNeeru's grandmother who became illduring her stay, (it seemed thatevery house had at least one sickperson during this time.) Whileundergoing some medical tests, shefell cracking some ribs andotherwise injuring herself. Shenow seems to be i^ecuperating quitewell. ^

PASSPORTS AWAITEID

There still is little word onthe passports for Amar and Neeru.Amar's came through the mail withsome errors on the document, so itwas returned and never heard fromagain. There was a report thatNeeru's was available but notmailed (Harter suspects that theauthorities are waiting on somesort of bribe.. .which will not beforthcoming).

October should find Harter inSat Tal in the mountains doingsome teaching and preaching forabout two or three weeks. Thetrio had spent a month there inlate May and early June completewith leopard, deer and fox. Thiswas a welcomed escape from thesummer's heat as well as a time ofspiritual renewal. Neerucontinues to do well in herstudies toward her bachelor ofscience degree on her way tobecoming a doctor. We pray thatthe Lord will continue to blessher efforts so that she may beused in this way if it is in Hiswill. Harter's studies continueto go well also as he received an"A+" in Greek, an "A" in HouseGroups and a "B" in Ethics(nobody's perfect). We assume the"B" reflects a lack of

understanding of the tests orassignments rather than a lack ofethics. Sermon topics for thesepast three months are "I Believein God", "I Believe in Jesus" and"I Believe in the Holy Spirit".In December the sermon topicshould be "I Believe in the VirginBirth". It is not that the samesermon is preached each week ofthe month, but that the topic isexpanded from week to week.Although the same sermon ispreached at different locationsduring the month.

SblARURNAGAR CHURCH

The appearance and atmospherearound the Swarupnagar Church isgetting better all the time sinceBarter and the Singhs moved to thenew quarters last year. The arecontinuing reports of improvementsin the garden around the building,including a rubber tree plant nowover five feet tall. It seemsthat with the influx of visitorsthe place is always full ofactivity which is a good thing forthe witness of the church. It ismore customary that a place ofworship be busy with some activityor other almost 24 hours a day inIndia. So the result is that thepeople see that the Church isalive and growing. Can we say ofour local Church that thecommun i tv sees _ us as, an a_l iye .andgrowing body? There is usuallymuch room for improvement in this
