Sales in the Bible Book Store during I987were slightly higher than in I986. January88 was a good month with people paying billsthat they should have paid in 1987.

In December we purchased our first evervacumn cleaner. Not many are sold in Kanpur. As one merchant told me, Kanpur is too dirtyfor vacumn cleaners. To tell you the truth,we use it more to blow dirt than to suck it.

In my B.D. studies I took an examination Inintroductory Hebrew in December, and an examin Pastoral Counselling in January. In Aprilthere will be exams on "Pauline Thought,"Indian Church History," and "Education Ministry." I will continue to bore you withthese details for several years.

Five articles of mine on "God" are now appearing in "The Light of Life" magazine ofBombay. Nothing more has been heard of myarticle, "The Last Words of Jesus," which isawaiting publication In the ChristianStandard.

Some of our old friends are no longer ableto contribute as they once did but I wouldlike to have a letter from you once in awhile.. I think that all of you understandthat you should not include any money orcheck when you write to me at my Kanpur address as such enclosures are often stolenfrom the envelope before delivery. If youwrite to me in Kanpur, you will get an answerfrom me from Kanpur even though you may nevercontribute.

    AND THEN THERE WAS ONE

With the departure from Kanpur of the last Methodist missionary, I have gained the dubiousdistinction of being Kanpur's last foreign missionary. Happily I am not the city's last missionary as there are missionaries working in Kanpur from south India. In fact they are probably more effective than we foreign missionaries were. More power to them! Miss Wallace ofthe California Methodists showed a great deal of love to the Kanpur people and they are bemoaning their loss. Among many things, she managed a school.

The good news is that we had ten baptisms during April. One of them is a driver of one ofIndia's fastest trains, the Gomti Express which runs up to Delhi. Construction work has alsobegun on the Swarupnagar Church and it is hoped that the basement will be finished beforethe onset of the rainy season at the end of June. Our Bible Book Store has purchased a 99year lease on a portion of the basement. The basement will be debt free while the remainderof the building will be built as funds become available. We have also helped the GovindnagarChurch buy some land for their building. The Christians at Ragaul are waiting in line forfunds to recondition a well which has fallen into disuse. Ragaul is where Mrs. Rothermelused to 1ive.

When you receive this, I should be attending to my summer duties at the Sat Tal ChristianAshram in the mountains. The blind musician, Samuel Mohan Singh, says that he is going to gowith me. 1 hope to be back in Kanpur by June 15th.

Studies and exams continue to intrigue me. i received a "B" in Pastoral Psychology, andnow I have taken up the study of Greek.

I was having trouble with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service but now they have sent me arefund-- I don t know why but I am not asking. During March I was having trouble with a newpair of dentures but they eventually decided to settle down. I spoke too soon when I saidthat the American dollar had not lost its value in relation to the Indian rupee. However theloss has been minimal, and we hope temporary.

Bad news often travels slowly to India and so we were late in learning of the deaths ofour brothers Guy Mayfield (of Europe), Chester Kapfer (of Missouri) arid Erriest Linn (ofndiana). Brother Linn was 9^. Here in Kanpur it was two of our lady members who left us.

John Morar, one of the best known Christians of our state, also died suddenly. His son Davidlived with us some years ago and still maintains connections.^ Sermonwise my recent sermons have included, "The Gospel According to Paul, (Romans).pla? 0^^^! g. "The Rich Young Ruler," (Gospels), "When thewas?) (ICor. 15), and "Being Born Again Is Not Enough," (Did you think it

Amillion people turned up to greet Rajiv Gandhi on a recent visit to Kanpur. It was a tu-mu tous welcome given to his mother Indira Gandhi many years ago that put her back on herpolitical feet after a defeat at the polls. Rajiv must also have drawn encouragement here.

Kuipahar IS keenly feeling the loss of Dr. Piettner who left India on Feb. 29th but Dr.and Mrs. Michael have arrived to help for a long as the Indian Government will allow. DollyChitwoodand Linda Stanton are also back on the job. Adele (Mrs. Harrold) McFarland was arecent visitor, and others come and go.

Let me introduce you to Mr. and Mrs. Murphy who have moved from Ft. Wayne, Indiana,to Elk Grove Village, Illinois. "Liz" (Mrs.Murphy) is the daughter of my cousin MarionBalsar Owens of New York State.

The Peels do not want any publicity fortheir generous contribution but you ought toknow that it came out of an out-of-courtsettlement in an accident case. Betty Peelearned that money the hard way.

Now on the lighter side:Some of you may have done it too but it is

one of the dangers of working in the kitchen. One early morning I mixed baking powder In a cup of milk instead of corn starch. What a mess! But several weeks later thebaking powder redeemed its reputation whenunexpected guests arrived and we ran shortof eggs. It was Amarjeet's idea that thequantity of eggs could be increased by adding baking powder. The best workers in ourkitchen are baking powder, soda and yeast.

I indulge in a great deal of experimentingwith breakfast dishes. We eat things at ourhouse that no one has ever eaten before andno one will ever eat again. The French Toastmade with yoghurt instead of milk was verytasty but awfully difficult to fry. Youmight like puffed rice in yoghurt but let itsoak for awhile. April and may are goodmonths for yoghurt In north India.

One of J5ur students recently1"exam Hby"confusing the word "Mecca"city of' the Muslims) with the Hindi"makka," or corn. She was supposed to writeabout Mecca but she wrote instead all aboutcorn. The examiner was not amused.

Mary the muppet did even worse in herexam. Not only did she miss all of the questions but she had extra marks taken off forher bad handwriting. She ended up with agrade of minus twenty. This was her thirdattempt to get out of lower K.C. She celebrated her Sixth birthday on May 20th.

    LIFE WITHOUT A COOK

    SEPTEMBER 1988

Nowadays we are trying to adjust to life without a cook, Mrs. Salim, our cook for thepast six years, is on extended sick leave. I have been mostly snacking and making occasional restaurant stops. I have already lost two pounds, if that is what I wanted to do.

The bookstore is in good shape. Sales have been good and the customers are happy. The newcalendars for 1989 have begun to arrive.

The rains have been heavier this year and this has been good for hardening the cement ofour new church buiIding. The basement is now nearing completion. We have been able to paythe church in full for the 99 year lease on a portion of the basement for the use of theBible Book Store but it may be a long time before we get possession of It because thechurch will be meeting in the basement for awhile.

Our errand boy, Ford, became the father of a daughter on July 2nd but joy quickly turnedto sorrow when the baby died on July l6th Besides several local friends, we have lost twovery good American friends: Aden McTeer of Texas and Herbert Cragle of Ohio.

The results of last Spring's exams are beginning to trickle in. Although 1 have passed, the grades fail to recommend me. At least one of my eight students has failed.

Preparations for our October convention are coming along well. We are expecting Dr. LeroyGarrett from Texas and Mark Maxey from Kanoya. Some others you may know are Leonard Thompson, Ragen Ipe, Dishington Sohklet and Emrys and Usha Rees. Pastor Thayare of our "Australian" churches and Sunny David of the non-instrument churches are also expected.

My month in the hills was mostly uneventful except that I had a series of "thorns in theflesh" none of which required medical attention. My ailments disappeared as soon as I gotback to Kanpur. Since then 1 have not ventured out of Kanpur except for visits to Kulpahar,Rath and Unnao. My July sermon was, "On Believing Every Comma," while my August sermon developed the theme, "Jesus My Guru."

1700 people have died so far in 1988 due to continuing violence in the state of Punjab.Closer home, the murder of a very popular badminton champion seems to have been politicallymotivated. The daughter of one of our preacher friends was murdered by her Muslim husbandduring a family quarrel. The girl did not have a good reputation.-There has been mass hysteria over the serialization of one of the Hindu epics. It has now been interrupted for ashort time. If I needed another reason for not buying a T.V. this would be it.

That brings us to a question that falls short of a satisfactory solution. We want to helpthe poor but just who are the poor? For several years out test has been the owning of a' TVset but some people have become very angry with us over that. They say that we don't helpthe people who need help but help the people who don't need It. One social worker solvedthe problem by finding out how many times in a day a family lit their stove, but that alsohas'its limitations. Maybe you have an idea you can lend us.

The Christians at Ragaul said that they needed $750 to repair their well but we did notunderstand their situation correctly. They needed to do the work during the dry season whenthe water level was down but by the time we were ready to help them the rains had startedand the water level was up again. We have put their money into Fixed Deposit until the nextdry season. Otherwise the church at Ragaul is as dry as old bones.

Two of our girls, Salome and Lalita, did well in their exams last year but two others,Miriam and Aradhna, lost their scholarships. Aradhna is also no longer considered poor nowthat her mother has bought a TV. Miriam and Aradhna are elgible for training scholarshipsIf they get themselves admitted somewhere. Vincent Walter continues in industrial trainingfor the second year and we will be supporting two Ragaul boys there also. Joel and Neeluhave begun their third and last year in Bible College. Many school children receive help inbuying their school books (which are not furnished by the schools). We give monthly help tonine elderly and sickly persons, and part help to two pastors. Other sick persons get helpfor medicine as the emergency arises.

Please continue to send your contributions to Miss Florence Douglas, 1111 No. Main St.,Joplin, Mo. 6a801, and address corrections to First Church of Christ, 25^5 W. Comet Rd.,C1inton, Ohio AA216

    DECEMBER I988

    NEW EXPERIENCES

October was an exciting month.. First, I went down to Calcutta to get Dr. Leroy Garretwho flew in from Manila. The new thing I saw in Calcutta was Mother Theresa's establishment and the nearby Kali Temple. The trip from Calcutta to Kanpur was not as grand as Ihad planned but Dr. Garrett enjoyed it. While Dr. Garrett went to Kulpahar for a week, Iwent up to New Delhi to get Mark and Walter Maxey who flew in from Japan. New things I sawin New Delhi were the home where Indira Gandhi lived and died, the memorial where she wascremated, and the Indira Gandhi Memorial international Airport. The Maxeys came in on aflight earlier than they had intimated and I could easily have missed them but the Lordhelped me to be in the right place at the right time*.

The All India Convention for which we had worked for more than two years is now history. We have only heard compliments about it although we are well aware of its shortcomings. Theattendees came from six different states and we were genuinely sorry to see the conventionend and the visitors go. One of our mistakes was that in making the location convenientfor the out-of-towners, we made it difficult for our own local people. Next time we willbe able to have it in our own church building. Before that we will probably host the Hindiconvention, often referred to as "The Bilaspur Convention."

This year the "Bilaspur Convention was held at Sitspur, home of Mr. and Mrs. Bernel Getter. Lawrence Lazarus and I attended from Kanpur. I enjoyed once again the hospitality ofthe Getters. Vera Mushrush was there from Indianapolis. William and Jean Roland motoredto both the Kanpur and Sitapur conventions. At the Sitapur convention I gave three shortta1ks on Prnyrr.

On the way to Sitapur, Lawrence and I accepted the Invitation of a blind friend to visitthe city of Ranchi in Bihard. We spoke at several very small meetings and were left wondering why the Lord had taken us there. The highlight of the Ranchi trip was a visit to the"Good Books" bookstore which is full of good ideas foi" our own bookstore.

Agruelling 28 hour bus trip through central India brought me back to Kanpur from Sitapur. At Rewa someone picked my pocket but no great damage was done. I have long since learnednot to carry all of my cash in one place. The thief also spared my bus ticket for which Iwas very thankful.

The work on the Swarupnagar church building is continuing but at a slower pace. I am toldthat It will take, another $A000 to finish the basement portion, and I would like to see atleast this much completed before I leave for furlough in April. I am also given, to understand that the church will soon start meeting in the basement. You will notice from thefinancial report that we are also helping with the construction of the church building atBarra on the outskirts of Kanpur. Two other church buildings are also asking for help butthey are not likely to hear from us for a while.

Except for minor jaunts to Kulpahar and Lucknow, 1 expect to stay close to Kanpur untilJanuary when I will make my annual trip to Pune south of Bombay.

We have trouble keeping up with the demand In our bookstore. We early sold out of 1989calendars and had to reorder. Amarjeet has relieved me of much of the burden of attendingto the customers. He has a good way of meeting people and the customers enjoy him. Mrs.Salim, our cook, has come back to work but we are only having her cook one meal a day.

During the past several months I have preached on the Problems of the Church in Corinth, and there is lots of material left.

Two old timers of the Rothermel era have recently died: Walter Babu and Sundar La Ramju. Both of these were well known to Fred and Thelma Smith. Several old timers survive: Budh-wanti Bai, Mrs. Masih Prasad, Tillie Bal and Mr. and Mrs. Dinnu Masih, and Ramadhar.

October and November are festival months in India. The plethora of holidays is enjoyedby students and employees but it brings chaos to banking and postal services. Christianstake advantage of the holidays and good weather for conventions and revival meetings. Bythe time these holidays end, colder weather has moved in. These are also great days for

e shopkeepers in the baxaars. My own contri-ution was to buy a new washing machine.Indian washing machines are not to be compared to American ones but they get the job done.

'n the meantime I have passed my 6Ath milestone. I am thankful to the Lord that myhea th seems to be better than ever although I do not look as young as I used to.
