THE PROBLEM V'lTH PREACHING

Mot very long ago, I made thestatement that I have always givenpreaching first priority. This.Isstill true but my enthusiasm forpreaching sermons has begun tocool a 1ittle bit.

The trouble Is that the Christians of Kanpur have made it acraze to preach sermons to eachother, at the same time neglecting3ible study, and neglecting alsothe 58^ of the population who knowlittle of what Christianity Is allabout.

Can one hear too many sermons?Definitely yes—when one hears andhears and does nothing with whathe learns. To be a "hear only"is one of the quickest ways toharden your heart.

That reminds me of the prophetIsaiah. is true that Isaiahpreached repentance but from Isa.6, we learn that God's purpose inordaining him to preach was thathis preaching should harden thehearts of his listeners; and inthat he was very successful

And that reminds me about catar

acts. Eye surgeons do not operateon cataracts until they are ripe. The preaching of Isaiah made theJewish nation ripe for its marchinto Babylonian captivity.

Is my problem becoming plain toYou? V/hen 1 preach to the Christians of Kanpur, am I only harden-

theif hearts? How can some ofthis preaching turned into

Bible Study? (That is not as easyas it sounds.) Shouldn't we spendless time with the Christians andmore time with non—Christians?

Dear Ones,

Box 3, P.O. Wawabganj, Kanpur 20S-002India; February 15, 1977

One of the few ttiings that I know about ray maternal grandfather is thathis death and burial ooind.ded with that of President >^cKinley in Sept,, 1901,More than 76 yeara later, my father has departed in the company of the president of India, Pakhruddin Ali Ahmed#::

"^brman Maynard, our pastor at Clinton, telephoned me on February 9th tolet rae know of Dad*s criticsl condition, then affain on the 10th to let me knowthat he had passed away. After receiving the first call, I was able to make •good progress in getting my documents together for a quick trip to the tj#S.,but all of ray plans and hopes were dashed when news^ came of the sudden deatbof the president in Ti^ew Delhi. All offices, banks isuid stores closed immediately and there was nothing more thajt could be done#.

The situation is now as it was two years ago. Perhaps I could havereaciJed Ohio in tirae for the ftineral-if I had not wanted* to return to IndianI am still trying to come to the U.S; but it all depe^'S on the pleasure ofthe local offldis. It could be that I will leaVe'-foP-*the U.S. in four'days,or four weeks, or four years or never. If, before sSAling this letter, thereis eaiy late news about this, I will add it at the end.

While all of this was going on, I got a tooth extracted. The last time .I got a tooth extracted was in London in 1947. My guess is that if I had beenliving in the U.S. during these past: 30 years, the ihnerican diet would haveleft rae dth few teeth.of my own. Indian sweets are not as damaging to theteeth as are American sweets.

^e main road near our house has been cut for the laying Of a new sewerline and all of the traffic to this part of the dty is now being detoured "past our house. The result is incessant noise and a permanent-cloud of dust. There is this good thing about it that now everybody knows vdiere Bible BhaVanis located. There was short cut across a vacant lot which was heudly Titfor blcydes but the busses and trucks have found it more convenient thannegotiating all the curves. There have been Several aiall accidents and wehave laid in some extra first aid supplies.

A broadcaster from Holleind has*just said that when people there beginto notice that the days are getting iZonger, then there is a spirit of optira-iran everywhere. If it is any encouragement to you, days in Kanpur arebednning to get waimer and waimer. :Within a montb^, fans will be needed.

If I am in Kanpur during March,* it looks as though it will be theusud. ^Hnarch of seimons. I am already scheduled to preach at twelve diffexyent places throu^out tVie length and bread-fch of the city during March/

We have a blind d^l staying at our house at the moment accompanied byher father and oldest brother. Her youngest brother (24 years between thetwo), has been living in our hostel for the past several mon'ths. The gi**!(roofher of five children) is undergoing tests by one of Indiana finest eyesurgeons. Hopes are very slim that anjHhing can be done for her.

The three new boys in my hostel remind me of the three stooges. Thetallest of them has a mlx»3 that ggoes blank whefiever you ask bim a Bible .question. The other night, the short one got some inddLible ink on hisfingers and proceeded to wipe them off on the rug as though it vras the grassoutdoors. The 'third looks like a hybrid between a clown and a scarecrow, and he has an interesting way of falling off of chairs~when he sits doim.

Yours most contOTtedly,

HOME UNTIL IViAY 15TH

As you read in the lastnewsletter, my father diedon Feb, 9th and I was expected home for the funeral. The latter was not to be butI eventually reached Clintonon March 17th,

The delay was due to thedeath of the Indian president and the preoccupationof the officials and theirclerks with the nationalelections.

Still, it was necessaryfor me to come and help settle the estate and to makesome arrangement for the150 year old homestead.

Tentatively, I am planningto stay in the U.S. untilMay 15th although I couldleave sooner. I am not seeking any speaking dates but Imay accept some invitations,I do not expect to come tothe U.S, for my regular furlough until 1981,

After all of the other delays, I was delayed one moreday because Pan American Airways said they had no roomfor me on their Tuesdayflite. There was plenty ofroom the next day and I enjoyed two seats all the wayto New York, At sunrise onWednesday, I was sitting inthe New Delhi airport. Atsunrise on Thursday, I wassitting in the bus stationin Pittsburgh after an eighthour bus ride from N.Y.O# Ithad been 34| lo^ hours fromsunrise to sunrise. The 24j-hour trip from New Delhi toNew York entailed 18| hoursin the air, l| hours at Teheran, 1| hours at Frankfortand 3 hours in London. Theplane left New Delhi at 6:40a.m. and arrived in New Yorkthe same day at 8:10 p.m.When I got to Clinton, Ipromptly fell asleep andslept for 10 hrs straight.

thaz, especially when thepatient himself has lost hiszes-: for life.

It Would have been moreconvenient for me if Dad hadexpired when I was home in1975, but those extra two"ears of life were very important to Dad. During thatTiime he saw many expressionsof the love of Christ, andhe had added tpportunitiesCO prepare himself to meethis Maker •

As for attending the interment, Jesus has alreadymade it plain in Mt. 8:21,SS, that burying the dead isvery unimportant compared toother aspects of Christianservice.

That is the reason why I\\ am thanking G-od that He did\\ not say Yes to my requests

despite the way I pesteredHim.

The 6th and 7th verses ofIsa. 55 are also appropos toDad^s case. Dad will be remembered as being a "goodman," but he was not theChristian that mother was.He was "properly baptized,"but he needed to give moreserious attention to thefive commands of Isa. 55:6,7to Seek, Call, Forsake, Return and Receive.""Beinggood is not good enough."

Which brings us back to Mt21:22. Could it be that whenwe ask amiss we are not asking in faith?

THANK GOD FOR UKAHSVfflRED PRAYERS

On the day that Jesus cursed the fig tree, Jesus toldhis disciples, "Whatever youpray for in faith you willreceive." Mt. 21:22.

What a tremendous promise IAnd many inspirational bookshave been written about answered prayers. I don't recall though anyone writing abook praising God for unanswered prayers.

The Apostle Paul couldhave written such a book.

From II Cor. 12:7-10 welearn that he prayed threetimes that his thorn in theflesh would be removed, butGod denied his request. Fromthis Paul learned that God'sgrace was sufficient for himand that God's power is madeperfect in our weakness.

Still it is a big shockwhen God says No to our mostfervent requests.

From the day that I saidgoodbye to Dad in December,1975, I never ceased to praythat I would get to visitwith him again. I neverdoubted for a minute thatGod Would grant my desire.

Then, when Dad died, allof us at Bible Bhavan prayedthat I would reach Clintonin time for the interment. We all believed that Godwould say Yes but again wewere denied.

I must admit that I feltthat God had let me down, and I began to doubt thatGod had listened.

Then, in the middle of asleepless night, God reminded me of His word in Isa.55:8,9, "My thoughts are notyour thoughts, neither areyour ways my ways, saith theLord. For as the heavens arehigher than your ways, andmy thoughts than yourthoughts," We should neverlose our confidence thatGod's actions are wiser thanour requests.

After all, we do not giveeverything to our- childrenthat they request. Whyshould w.e expect God to giveus a blank check for anything that we want even ifwe could rate as being "goodchildren."

V/hat God did in regards tomy father was definitely thebest. As it was, God kepthim alive far beyond histime. There is, after all, alimit to which an old andabused (by cigarettes) machine can be kept going. According to the death certificate, Dad was sufferingfrom renal failure, diabetesheart failure, gangrene, anaemia and pneumonia. Sothere may be a limit to whatGod can do in a case like

The noneoon (that is, the rainy season), started about July 1st. The fannerswho wore ooinplaining about lack of water several we4:s apo are now conplaiulngthat they have too mdi. Let us hope that during the Millenium, the Lord willbe able to satisfy all of the farmers of all of the nations.

There was one baptism here on July 3rdJ Shakuntala, the fourth of fivedaughters of Puttu Lai. Puttu lives in a village fifty miles from Kanpur huthe has not nepfl.ected to see that his children become baptized at a proper age.On our part, we have also helped his children, one ly one, to get an education.Otherwise, Puttu has a pugilisttc personality that enables him to make enemieseasily and for the wrong reasons.

I was due to go to Allahabad on Saturday July l6th to attend a committeemeeting of the Bible.Society, and so I decided to go one day early and visitan old friend who was suffering from canceri However, one day before nyplanned departure, I got a telegram at 6 a.m. Informing me that ny friend haddied arid that her faneral would be that afternoon, 1 caught the bus at 8 a.m„,arriving in Allahabad at 2: 30 p.m. It was raining hard and the streets wereflooded but eventually I reached the home of the deceased. My entrance, justaa fhe lid was being closed, was as dramatic as I have ever made.

There is some good news that makes us sadi The good news is that an organsisatioh called "Every Home Crusade" has ordered 1000 copies of the Hindiedition of ny book, "ABCs of the Christian Faith. " The sad part of it isthat the Hindi edition is still far from ready. The promises of our publisher,Lawrence Lazarus, that he would fini^ the hock quickly, have so far gone fornau^t.

For the first time in 6000 years, it ianow possible to drive directly toKulpahar from Kanpur during the rainy season. Last year, the bridge acrossthe Jumna Blver was opened, and now this month traffic has begun crossing thenew bridge on the Betwa Biver, Within the next couple of weeks, I hope totake the Bible Chariot (ny three-wheeler) down to Kulpahar vlth a load ofbooks. Miss Moshier has handed out some Rs. 1000 worth of gift certificateswhich are to be redeemed at our bookstall. In preparation for this GrandSale, I have ordered supplies from Hew Delhi, Bombay, Madras and Calcutta. When ell of the shipments get here, I will tgke off for Kulpahar with the lotand come back with the loot.

The Bible Chariot continues to be a big help, especially when it rains.Unfortunately we are not able to use it much at night because the back lightand breke light are usually not woiking, despite^;^ch expense and effort. It seems that "Sie wiring cannot stand the bu^eiy hisnps.

My new scooter was delivered in April, 15 months after it was ordered, Iwtit was not expedient to regd-ster it until the 1967 scooter had been sold. Itwas finally registered on July 1st receiving the license number UTZ 5001. Thenumbers here do not change ftom year to year but continue as long as thevehicle is on the road.

Good rec^pts during the past months have permitted us to buy new type forthe print shop. The machine will also he overhauled soon. We will probablyhave to make some new arrangement for the contimance of our Hindi magazinebecause the arrangement made a year ago has not woiked out veiy well.

The thirtieth anniversary of ny arrival in India will not be celebratedbut it will be remembered with thanksgiving on August 3rd.

However, I did enjoy very much myvisit to Disney V/orld In Florida inApril In the company of my sister'stwo grandsons. Other enjoyments during my two month visit to the StatesIncluded Knoxvilie's Dogwood Trail,Lookout Mountain, Walden Ridge, theAtlanta skyline, Chicago's SearsTower, the Mowering Crabs of AnnArbor, and the Gettysburg Battlefield. The visits with relatives andold friends were more relaxed thanpreviously possible. Fellowship wasenjoyed with our schools In Clncln-natl,Joplln and Searcy, and with ourchurches In Clinton, Centerburg,Linden, Ft. Myers, Wadsworth,Harrls-burg and Lancaster.

[j Just for the record. It should be7 reported that all of mv expenses

from the time tfiat^ TV^FIKanpur to

the time that I got back were paidfor by friends and relatives, and myfather's estate. My expenses In thehills were also paid for from personal funds.

The trip to the hills was sparkedby the wedding of one of "'my oldboys, "Prem Dan Das" who succeeded Ingetting a wife much better than hedeserved. The wedding at Barellly onJune 17th was simple and very nice.

In the hills, I had two opportunities to preach at the world renownedSat Tal Ashgram founded by the lateDr. E. Stanley Jones. The presentmanager Is an old friend of mine.

The flIte from New York to Delhi,May 18-21, was a version of Alrportwhere the action takes place on theground. Our take-off from JFK wasdelayed by a violent thunderstormfollowed by a traffic jam. MO GRIPES, PLEASEI was going to tell you a little

more about my trip to the hills butIt sounded too complaintlve and so Itore It up.

So I won't tell you how that whenI got to the railhead, Kathgodam, iwas told that my bus did not leavefrom there but that I would have toretrace my steps to the previousstation, HaldwanI, and catch the busfrom there.

1 won't tell you that after waiting 20 minutes In front of the ticket window, I found that the ticketshad been sold Inside the bus andthat the bus, last for the day, hadleft. I won't tell you how I had tospend a night on a bench In therailway station, or how hungry I wasor how Harinam got soaked lookingfor me.

I won't tell you that after lugging my luggage from pillar to post,I was sore In more ways than one andwould gladly have returned to KanpurIf the way had been opened.

I won't tell you how that on thereturn trip, the train conductordisappeared before the train leftthus cheating Harinam and I of thesecond berth that was due us. Since1 had a berth and Harinam was sitting In the aisle, I let him sit ona corner of the berth. That was likeletting the camel put his nose Inside the tent: Harinam was soonsleeping soundly on the berth whileI spent the night In the aisle.

The Lord helped us when my suitcase fell off the upper berth narrowly missing the heads and bones ofother passengers. It could easily

have killed or maimed someone.

ENCOURAGED BY GOOD RECEIPTS

We have been pleasantly surprisedthat contributions to our work havekept up so well this year. - It hashelped us to undertake more projectsfor the year than what we had original ly planned and budgeted.

New type has been purchased forthe press In both English and Hindi, and the printing machine will soonbe overhauled. A new edition ofChristasian is also being printedbut it will be different from beforedue to government restrictions. Therestrictions which were made law bythe government of Mrs. Gandhi arestill in force.

One of the new developments inIndia is that Coca Cola Is no longeravailable here because the Atlantapeople refuse to reveal their secretto the Indian manufacturers. Fearnot, a more or less suitable substitute will be available.

We have two new members in our hostel. Sun 11 DeSilva was sent to theKulpahar Kids' Home when he was asmall child and has now returned toKanpur after 12 years. This year wewill help him finish the 12th gradeif he behaves properly, we may help

him to learn a trade after that. Heis reported to be a good student buthe had fallen in with some bad company there. Otherwise the kid has agood reputation and he seems sedateenough to us. "He isn't like Tommy",is what everyone says.

The last time we heard from Tommy,he was earning a fairly good livingdoing odd electrical jobs In thecity of Jhansi. He lost his job inKulpahar several months ago.

The second entrant in our hostelis a dog that has come to us fullygrown. He was named Peter by hisprevious master who has joined acircus as a musician. He is a happydog who welcomes everyone who comesthrough the gate. He is useless as awatchdog but he is a good ratter.

The oldest member of the Vishnu-PMri Church, 85 year old Mrs. HoriLai, died on Aug. 6th from injuriessuffered In a traffic accident. Having expressed some forebodings, shewas coming to Vishnupuri when theriksha in which; she was riding wasbumped from behind by a scooter. Shehad enjoyed good health and a goodmind, and she was also a good Chris-

Page 16: Harter Ralph 1977 India

tian. Among those who attended- herfuneral was the grandson of hergrandaughter. The funeral was heldoutdoors between the apartmentbuildings and provided an excellentopportunity to witness to the non-Christians who were watching.

Just two days before, I had hadthe funeral of the 15 month olddaughter of one of our more backwardfamilies. Although I had pretty muchgiven up the family as a hopelesscase, I now have some hopes ofbringing them forward.

V7e have not had very many baptismsso far this year but one girl, Sha-kuntala Lai, was baptised on July 3*Her father, Puttu Lai, was convertedfrom Hinduism 25 years ago, and hehas been concerned to see that his

children are baptised when theyreach an age of accountability.

The Swarupnagar Church has madethe final payment for their buildingsite. Total cost of the land was$5B00. A temporary building has alsobeen built which is sufficient forthe church's needs at the presenttime. Due to government regulations,it has not yet been possible to getthe deed registered, but in India, possession is a nine-tenths of'thelaw. Indian people are also tooreligious to try and evict a church. The consequences will be very serious if I am wrong about this butchances must be taken if there is tobe any progress.

Harinam has begun his final yearof studies at Kanpur's Christ ChurchCollege. At the same time, he continues to take tests and appear at

interviews that may someday land hima job. One recent interview almostended in a riot when 1500 applicantsturned up to try out for 2 Jobs. Theapplicants were told to come at 8 a.m.but the examiners did not arrive un

til after 10:30. I think that Harinam can write that one off as a lost

cause.

August 3rd marked the thirtiethAnniversary of my first arrival inIndia. August 15th was the thirtiethAnniversary of India's Independence.

There will have to be some changesvery soon in the publication of ourHindi paper, Jeeyan-Deep. When thelaw forbade printing it with foreignfunds. The magazine was turned overto the new owners. Unfortunately, theyhave not been able to make ends meetand they have also quarried amongthemselves.

Thanks to some salesmanship byHarinam, two of my books are now onsale at the Kanpur railway station. The books are ''ABCs of the Christian Faith," in English, and "What,Kind of a Person^ Should I Be," inHindi. V/e are also trying to marketa book of Bible selections publishedby Dr. Victor C. Rambo.

The annual convention of our Hindispeaking churches will be held thisyear In Kanpur with V/llliam Rolandas the main speaker. It Is typicalof this group that they have not yetdecided on the dates but it will besometime in October or November. Onsome occasions they change the datesat the last minute which results In

some people arriving either a weekearly or a week late.

ENTER V.T. THOMASOne of the Christian preachers of

Kanpur, Mr. V.T. Thomas, has beenaccepted as a student at JohnsonBible College. It is hoped that Mr.Thomas may reach Tennessee by theend of August.

Brother Thomas is a south Indianmissionary who has been working forseveral years in Kanpur. It must beremembered that Christianity innorth India is so much weaker thanin south India that the churches insouth India send Missionaries tonorth India.

Brother Thomas knows very littleof the Restoration Movement but heis an immersed believer. During hisyears in Kanpur, we have enjoyed thefullest cooperation and fellowship.

Brother Thomas has a sister livingin Macon, Georgia, and he is payinghis own travelng expenses. It cannot be said therefore that I amsending him to the U.S., but I havehelped him with his admission toJBC. I will also be responsible tosee that JBC suffers no loss on hisaccount. Otherwise, I have no obligations to him and he has no obligations to me. V/hen he returns toIndia, he will serve the Lord as theLord leads him.

Eastern Christian College and Cincinnati Bible College were alsowilling to admit him.

Any of you who are interested inhelping with Mr. Thomas's expensesat JBC may please contact the Registrar, Johnson Bible College, Klm-berlin Heights Station, Knoxville,Tenn. 37920

CHIT-CHAT

The rainy season Is supposed to beover but we are still having someoccasional showers.

Kanpur has been shaken up severaltimes during the past month. Youwill read about the Shia-Sunni riotson the back page. These were preceded by student disturbances. Notconnected with the disturbances butstill adding to the temper of thetimes was the gruesome murder of thesix year old son of a Muslim schoolprincipal by the sixteen-year-oldson of the ex (and ousted)principal.

In a very surprising development,Mrs. Indira Gandhi visited Kanpurand a quarter-of-a-mi11 ion peopleturned out to hear her—twice asmany as went to hear her when shewas the Prime Minister. My own houseis sharply divided on politics andso I am well informed about the goodand bad points of both parties.

No one Is happy about the rise Inprices but everyone disagrees as towhy prices have risen. Mrs. Gandhiblames it on the new leaders whilethe new leaders blame It on Mrs.Gandhi and her party members. It maynot have anything to do with either

party but then these are the thingsthat politics are made of.

Kanpur's Christian community wasshaken by the sudden death (by heartattack) of one of its leading pastors, a Pentecostal. There was subdued gossip about him before he diedbut now "the lid Is off," and it Isa main item of conversation all overtown. Our congregation in Vishnupurihas gained several members due tothe departure of this their formerpastor.

The church in Swarupnagar seems tobe moving along despite their squabbling. 1 guess they need to squabblein order to keep each other in line, the members In Vishnupuri do notsquabble because they are not yetsufficiently organized for It. Thegroup with which we fellowship InGovlndnagar is doing well nowadays.

In my last newsletter I announceda forthcoming issue of Christaslan. This developed instead Into a smallbook entitled, "Same Story, NewTwist," a comparative study of twoparables of Jesus. After some timemost of you will receive a freecopy of this by seamail.

Two of the hostel boys (Sanl thetailor and his cousin Alford thesignboard painter) have now finishedtheir year with us and have returnedto their homes. One new boy, Shimon, has come to us from Ragaul (Mrs.Rothermel's old station) to spend ayear learning furniture making. HeIs a dullard but he has a real Interest In carpentry.

Harlnam's college classes were tohave begun two months ago but theyare still pending. The reason forthis Is that the results of lastyear's examinations have not yetbeen announced.

In the meantime Harlnam did a goodpiece of work up on the Nepal borderwhere two of my former boys (Peterand Andrlyas) live. Harlnam providedthe youthful spark that was neededto move the small group of Christiansthere to meet weekly around the tableof the Lord. Harlnam Is also tryingto settle a very old dispute betweenAndrlyas and his girlfriend.

Another of my ex-boys, Charles, Isto be married here at my house onOctober 20th to Shakuntala Lai, agirl whom I baptized last year. SheIs a different Shakuntala Lai fromthe one that was baptized this July.Charles and Shakuntala are both lovable kids and we have full hopes thatthey will live happily ever after. Mypresence Is also expected at weddingsIn Hamlrpur and Kulpahar. These areall "arranged marriages" where thebrides and grooms have not much morethan met each other.

At the beginning of September, Iextricated myself from a difficult

situation by telling a fellow that Iwas going out of town. Having saidthat much, I then had to go out oftown or be proven a liar. Through asystem of casting lots, i decided tovisit one of our first converts, Mr.G.S. Negl, In Dehbra Dun. Since Itwas a joyrlde, I went at my own expense.

One of the preachers of Kanpur,Mr. V.T. Thomas, was leaving for theU.S. and I helped him get admittedto Johnson Bible College. At thelast minute though the American gov"ernment refused to give him a visa.Due to the problem which the U.S. Ishaving with illegal Immigrants, theAmerican Government Is now demandingthat prospective students going tothe U.S. prove that they have "compelling reasons," (like a wife andkids) to bring them back to theirhomes again. Since Brother Thomas Isa bachelor, he could not convincethe American officials that he wouldwant to return to India. I thinkthat my sympathies In the matter arewith the American government. Theonly other alternative would be forall nations to remove all restrictions and allow everyone In theworld to travel and live whereverthey chose. This would be good formissionary work but otherwise Americans might not like It.

i have been flattered with an Invitation lead a weekly - BibleStudy among the staff members of theMethodist High School In Kanpur. Itwas their happy choice to study thebook of Acts. My pay Is a free mealon V/ednesday nights.

SHIAS AND SUNN IS

Muslims are divided Into two maingroups, the Shias and the Sunnis. These two groups know how to uniteagainst a common enemy but at othertimes they fight each other.

Trouble this time started in Luck-

now, the state capitol, when theShias were permitted to take out aprocession and the Sunnis (who arein tb.^ minority in Lucknow) were notpermitted. At least eioht peopledied in the rioting that followed.

The next morning the news appearedin the Kanpur newspapers fifty milesaway where the Sunnis are the majorMuslim group. In this respect youcan consider Kanpur to be the IrishFree State (Catholic), and Lucknowto be Northern Ireland (Protestant),but ordinarily Sunnis are morepeaceable than Shias.

That morning at about 10,1 wasriding through the Muslim area whenthe Sunnis began to take revenge onthe Shias. Smoke was billowing downthe street, some people were gawkingand others were scattering.

I went on my way as though nothingwere happening and attended to asmall piece of business. However, five minutes later the police cameand ordered everyone home. I was oneof the first out of sight.

Officials say seven were killed inKanpur but exact figures are oftenwithheld in order to prevent furtherrevenge. Much property was also destroyed and some Shia families havehad to be evacuated.

The two cities are now returningto normal, more or less.
