Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson Saturday, Mat 18 th 2019 Race 1 #7 Munnings Beach #6 Lillibet #4 Capoeira #1 One Moon #7 MUNNINGS BEACH took a few strides to find her footing, and then rushed up the rail in a premature move before finishing evenly on debut. She had a wide trip second time out when offering no stretch response. She takes a drop and adds blinkers for her return. #6 LILLIBET ran very well against the bias when finishing second behind a wire-to-wire first time starter last time out. She would benefit greatly from a pace duel that may not end up happening. #4 CAPOEIRA finished fourth against a fairly soft group of males on debut and showed some interest. The third place finisher came back to beat three year olds for $15,000 with a 53 Beyer. #1 ONE MOON made two starts last year without threatening. Like Munnings Beach, she drops and adds blinkers for her seasonal debut. Race 2 #1 Forest Brother Best Bet #3 Spanish Express #6 Forester’s Forum #7 Tale of the Nile #1 FOREST BROTHER was an allowance winner after attracting a claim last summer and finished the season in productive form. He’s a game closer in a race that looks loaded with speed. #3 SPANISH EXPRESS is one of several speed types in here, but of all the speeds he may be the one most suited to sitting just off of the front. He was only 1 ½ lengths behind Forest Brother in their final start of the year. #6 FORESTER’S FORUM forced the pace while racing wide against the bias on opening day and was outfinished by some winter trained foes. He has the right to improve off of that start. #7 TALE OF THE NILE really tailed off suddenly in his last two starts of 2018, but will likely be a closer in this field of speed horses and could offer good value. Race 3 #4 Bold Script #2 Power Gal (JPN) #1 Souper Charlotte #5 Above All Names #4 BOLD SCRIPT was taken back and failed to rally after a four-wide move in the Davona Dale at Gulfstream in March. She looks a step ahead of her foes today. #2 POWER GAL (JPN) exits a decent third in the Star Shoot and now stretches back around two turns. She won the Martha Washington going a mile at Oaklawn and did not run as bad as it looks on paper when finishing seventh in the Honeybee. #1 SOUPER CHARLOTTE is two for two, with a solid front end maiden win and a stalking win in the Glorious Song. She wintered in Ocala. #5 ABOVE ALL NAMES broke her maiden around two turns last year and was game when finishing third behind Souper Charlotte in the Glorious Song. Race 4 #5 Vinyasa #9 Pink Scribbles #1 Miss Ariel #2 Fine Lady #5 VINYASA raced twice on turf last year against allowance foes, showing some interest but not threatening. She now faces the Ontario Sired/$40,000 split and returns from a winter in South Carolina. #9 PINK SCRIBBLES stalked a speed duel before making a bid for the lead turning for home, dueled to the wire and just missed to a winter trained first time starter. She is the only runner here with Beyers in the 60s. #1 MISS ARIEL was showing speed before being outfinished in her juvenile starts. Although there are other potential speed types, she could control things from the rail. #2 FINE LADY showed some run around two turns last year. She kicks off the season at an extended sprint and adds blinkers. Race 5 #1 Crumlin Express #3 Li’l Miss Trouble #8 Megalin Candy #4 Diamond Express #1 CRUMLIN EXPRESS was hustled after a slow start on April 26 but faltered and was eased across the wire. She faced $25,000 three year olds that day; she now faces older mares at the $7,500 level. #3 LI’L MISS TROUBLE stalked the early pace and made a nice move to take and hold the lead, taking advantage of her winter fitness on April 26. #8 MEGALIN CANDY ran okay on turf against $16,000 non-winners of three at Tampa last time out. Although only one for 38 in her career, she is a consistent check-earner. #4 DIAMOND EXPRESS was an easy winner on debut before being on the edges when facing non-winners of two. She can show some speed or close and adds blinkers.

Handicapper’s Journal – Doug McPherson Saturday, Mat 18th 2019 Race 6 #6 O’Kratos #5 Fire for Effect #1 Special Forces #7 Shakhimat #6 O’KRATOS won the Marine Stakes last year before going to the Ohio Derby, a race in which he got a rough opening ¼ and never got involved. He came back for a run on turf in the Toronto Cup in which he failed to finish well. The synthetic seems to be his much preferred surface. #5 FIRE FOR EFFECT sat midpack and finished best as a hot pace began to weaken going seven furlongs on April 26, then galloped out a lap of the track. All of his wins before that were around two turns. #1 SPECIAL FORCES earned two big wins after attracting a $40,000 claim, both sitting at or near the back and rallying. There looks like a reasonable amount of speed to set things up for him. #7 SHAKHIMAT has always been a solid front end router, but blasted to the front at a sprint last time out and tired in the stretch. His back class should not be ignored and he can certainly threaten if he settles better in the early stages.

Race 7 #1 Sir Sahib #6 Coleyville #4 Tinker Ring #5 Artistico #1 SIR SAHIB makes his first start since October after a good summer racing on turf in Kentucky. He wintered at Gulfstream and returns as a gelding. #6 COLEYVILLE went through his maiden, non-two and non-three conditions before ending the season with two respectable runs at this first allowance level. #4 TINKER RING was a well beaten second at this level on closing day behind a US invader who recently won a second level allowance at Laurel. He had a disappointing winter at Penn National and was a non threat in a starter allowance/optional $40,000, but could run a good race here. #5 ARTISTICO was a two time winner last year, both in the Turf Endurance series. He came up flat in his final start of the season in an off turf event at ten furlongs.

Race 8 #7 Tappitty Tappitty #4 Miss Behave #2 Ready and Perfect #6 Street Zapper #7 TAPPITTY TAPPITTY made the lead in the stretch but was outfinished in her debut here, then returned in a Florida bred race on the Gulfstream turf that has produced a surprising number of winners, four who won next time out and two more that won in later starts. #4 MISS BEHAVE ran a good second on debut behind a

solid filly who had been running well in Florida. Improvement second time out will likely be expected. #2 READY AND PERFECT has trained in Florida and Kentucky before returning to Woodbine for this debut. She is out of Breeders’ Cup Fillies & Mares Turf winner Perfect Shirl. Three year old half-brother Perfect Speighty was a debut winner going a route on turf at Laurel last month. #6 STREET ZAPPER wintered at Palm Meadows and has had several local breezes. Ghostzapper foals have a 21% strike rate on synthetic, with 123 foals providing a 594 start sample size.

Race 9 #3 Gottoknowrightnow #7 Victor’s Destiny #4 Battle of Yorktown #1 My Final Turn #3 GOTTOKNOWRIGHTNOW showed speed but faltered when debuting in a race won by recent Wando Stakes winner Skywire. He now returns for $25,000. #7 VICTOR’S DESTINY had a rough trip when finishing fifth on debut behind Krachenwagen and Souper Success, who won the Woodstock Stakes on April 27. He adds blinkers and drops in class. #4 BATTLE OF YORKTOWN had a rough start and a wide trip when finishing third in his second start at Gulfstream after attracting a claim on debut. #1 MY FINAL TURN is the third foal to race for an unraced mare. Two of the three foals are winners, including 11 time winner Hidden Turn, who earned over $380,000 in her career.

Race 10 #9 Miracle Silver #2 Water Polo #5 Sandy Bay #1 Donnie Brasco #3 Harper P M #9 MIRACLE SILVER was the only horse to close from far back in a race where the field was well strung out and the top two were winter conditioned. #2 WATER POLO made up ground after being blocked at the top of the stretch and finished third on opening day. He was scratched from a $40,000 race last week in favour of this spot. #5 SANDY BAY broke his maiden in an allowance field of primarily Ontario Sired company, then disappointed in a $40,000 non-winners of two. He wastes no time dropping after being privately purchased. #1 DONNIE BRASCO was a well beaten third in a split Ontario Sired/$40,000 group of three year olds topped by Frost King winner My Silencer. He drops in price and faces older foes. #3 HARPER P M was a scratch from the same $40,000 race Water Polo withdrew from last week. His form has been poor but the runner up finish on October 27 would be very competitive with this group.
