Grace United Methodist Church NEWSCASTER World Communion Sunday – October 7, 2012 World Communion Sunday (originally called World Wide Communion Sunday) originated in the Presbyterian Church (USA). In 1936, for the first time, the first Sunday in October was celebrated in Presbyterian churches in the United States and overseas. From the beginning, it was planned so that other denominations could make use of it and, after a few years, the idea spread beyond the Presbyterian Church. The Department of Evangelism of the Federal Council of Churches (a predecessor body of the National Council of Churches) was first associated with World Wide Communion Sunday in 1940. World Wide Communion Sunday was a global, interdenominational event. Prompted by the impact of World War II, the Methodist Church received an offering on this Sunday for the Fellowship of Suffering and Service. In 1971, the United Methodist Church changed the name of the observance to World Communion Sunday and redistributed the offering to support the Crusade Scholarship Program (begun in 1944), the Ethnic Minority Scholarship Program and the Division of Chaplains and Related Ministries. In 1980, Chaplains and Related Ministries were moved to World Service funding, but the World Communion Sun- day offering continued to assist ethnic-minority students pursuing various avenues of ministry. We share with oth- ers through our World Communion Offering On one Sunday each year, World Communion Sunday, many Christians come to the Lord’s table mindful that it is a big table for a big family. We come on this Sunday to celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Communion and acknowledge that despite our many differences, here at the table we are called to be one in Christ Jesus, one in the expression of our faith, and one in the fellowship of believers. On World Communion Sunday, we remember that when the loaf is broken here, it is also broken in South Africa, in Cameroon, in Germany, in Southern California, on the shores of Lake Michigan, in the outback of Australia, in a white clapboard church in New England, in a store front in Las Vegas, on an altar in a European cathedral, in a chaplains tent in the mountains of Afghanistan. It is broken by a missionary in Southeast Asia, by a priest in Rome, by a preacher in Bolivia. With this knowledge comes an understanding that what we do here is not for us alone, but it is indeed for the world. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son… On World Communion Sunday this year, we will celebrate Holy Communion with many kinds of bread to remind us that Jesus died for all of us, many kinds of people. I love being your pastor, Jim

Meet at the…. BEACH from 4-6pm Sunday, October 14. Join us

at Casperson’s Beach and Park. Invite friends to join us for this relaxing evening!

Lots of Planning, Visioning, and Praying! The Discipleship Council is back up and running after taking a break for a majority of the summer. We had our first meeting on Sunday, September 16. At this meeting we talked through some of the restructuring of the council, roles and responsibilities, and plans for the future. In January the discipleship council will be launching a vision for the children and family ministry. If you would like to share your dreams, hopes, and ways you can be in-volved with this ministry, here are the people who are members of the Discipleship Council: Camille Cline, Becky Delaney, Jennifer Kranz, Kristen Mikarts, Janet Shahan, Mary Williams, and Barry Zahnd. I hope you will consider talking with these folks about your hopes, dreams, and even concerns! We would love for you to be invested in this vision that God is leading us towards! Blessings!

Moms’ Morning Out started out great! We are excited about

the great families we have participating. We have a few more spots open. We added a

Monday class for our 3s as well! Call Devon if you are

interested in joining!

4 Weeks 4 A Child Volunteers are needed to teach in our new Sunday School Program called “GALAXY.” Would you be willing to teach in the Kindergarten and 1st grade

room during the 9am worship hour? Would you like to be a small group leader for the 2nd-5th graders?

Would you be available to welcome and sign-in children from 8:45-9:05? Maybe you would like to lead the children in singing? Or would you like to

volunteer in the nursery? There are many different ways you can volunteer with our children. Please pray about volunteering for an hour to two hours a week for one month to teach and lead children to

know Christ more! Contact Devon if you feel God is leading you to volunteer in some way with

children and family ministry and you aren’t sure what the options are for you!

Will be rescheduled for April 2013. More information to come!

Third grade Bible presentations On Sunday, October 21 Grace will be presenting Bibles to our children from 3rd—5th grade. If your child is in 3rd grade, please let Devon know ASAP. For 4th-5th graders, let Devon know if you have NOT received a Bible so we can get one to you!!

Aloha! September was a busy month for the youth at GUMC! Here's a few of the highlights: On Friday the 7, we took a group of 17 youth and adults up to the Night of Joy at Disney's Magic Kingdom! This event, which was celebrating it's 30th year, featured performances from top Christian recording artists and all of the rides, of course! We had an amazing time at the park, then spent the night at a family member's home in Orlando. The following Wednesday, the youth participated in a Scavenger Hunt, which had 5 teams of youth and adult leaders driving all over the area to solve riddles and perform various challenges! Then, that Friday and Saturday, a few of our high school students and adults joined the youth from Christ UMC for a Fall Re-treat down to Ft. Myers. Matt led worship for the weekend, and we all enjoyed a wonderful time of fellowship and growth in the Lord. The youth continue to meet every Sunday morning at 10:15 and Wednesday evenings at 6:30, as well as various other times for special events. Our newly-formed young adult group, called "R & R" (re-charge and reach out), also meets Sundays at 10:15. We're getting geared up for an exciting Fall, including doing our part in the Trunk or Treat event on October 31! Hope to see you at an event soon! In Christ, Matt Youth Director and Worship Leader

A weekly group for single parents There aren’t many people who truly understand the unique challenges single

parents face. You deeply desire to do what’s best for your kids, but sometimes it’s all you can do to survive from one day to the next. Single & Parenting is a

special weekly group that will bring hope to your life. We’d love for you to join us at 6:30pm on Mondays September 17 – December 10

in TFEC room 108. $20 for the book and childcare is provided. For more information contact Devon at [email protected]

On Wednesday, October 31, join us for “TRUNK-OR-TREAT” from 6-7:30. You are invited to decorate your trunk and hand out candy in the church parking lot to any trick-or-treaters that come to Grace. We would love to have about 20 cars decorated and handing out candy! The children will vote on the best decorated trunk! The youth group will also be selling hotdogs, chips, and drinks to raise money for 2013 mission trip! Come out and have a great time at this years Trunk-or-Treat!

Connection Café

Starting Wednesdays, October 3 through November 14, we will join together for dinner, fellowship, and study. Dinner begins at 5:30pm and studies begin around 6:15pm. Dinner per youth will be $5, adult $7.50, and families with children 18 and under $16.00. This helps cover the cost of our din-ners since food cost have increased. Choir practice also happens on this evening! If you are inter-ested in learning more or signing up for one of the classes before we begin, visit the website and link on the “information form” for more information. A Disciple’s Path: Deepening Your Relationship with Christ and the Church: Pastor Jim will lead A Disciple’s Path, which combines a uniquely Wesleyan understanding of growth in love and grace with the practices of spiritual discipline expressed in the membership vows when we promise to participate in the ministries of the church by our prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. Wherever you are – on the road of discipleship to follow Jesus – from the beginner to the seasoned traveler – or somewhere in-between. All are welcome to attend. Stepping Up: A Journey Through the Psalms of Ascent – Janet Shahan will facilitate this in-depth women's Bible study of Psalms 120-134. Traveling pilgrims sang these psalms both on the way to the great festivals of the LORD and as key elements of the worship at those festivals. Just as a song or poem can express feelings of fear, doubt, hope, and joy, these 15 psalms model how we can voice our own petitions and praises to our God, who is always available and ready to hear us. Sacred Parenting: Pastor Devon will facilitate this in-depth course on spiritual formation, expressly designed by God to shape your soul in ways you cannot imagine. What if one of God's primary in-tentions for you as a parent isn't about successfully raising perfect children, but about you becoming more holy? Sacred Parenting helps you look at parenting from a different perspective. Dominoes and Cards with Linda Tallman. Come to dinner then enjoy some great company as games are played. What a great way to be in fellowship with friends at Grace! Once the tables are cleared, the games will begin! Children’s Class (K-5th) - Come and learn more about loving, following, and following Jesus through Bible study and activities. Led by Carol Flaherty Walking Group. Join us for a walk around the island after a delicious dinner! Folks will gather in the lobby of TFEC with walking shoes on!

FINANCE CORNER The budget for next year has been finalized by the finance team and will be presented to the Church Council on October 8, 2012. Our budget for 2013 is a little less than 2012. Giv-ing is down compared to last year so it is nec-essary that we keep next year’s budget in line. Our Financial Campaign for 2013 will be Extravagant Generosity: The Heart of Giving. “Giving helps us become what God wants us to be. Giving is not merely about the church’s need for money but about the Christian’s need to grow in generosity. Generosity is a fruit of the Spirit, a sign of our spiritual growth. God uses our giving to change the world for God’s purposes, and God uses our giving to reconfig-ure our interior lives and to change us!” Let’s pray for God’s guidance to have Extrava-gant Generosity. Commitment Sunday will be November 18, 2012. Diane Bender , Finance Chair

Blessing of Animals

Grace UMC will host a “Blessing of the Animals” service on Saturday, October 6, at 4:00 p.m. on the lawn outside Punch Hall. All pets are welcome, but should be on leashes or in cages, please. Pets are special in the lives of people of all ages and can be true companions. Blessing of the Animals is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures. This brief worship service celebrates God’s love for all creation, reminds us to care for the animals in our lives, and offers a special time when Pastor Jim will bless the pets of our congregation. It is traditionally celebrated near the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi (October 4), who is the Roman Catholic patron saint of animals. You are also welcome to bring a picture of a pet that prefers to stay home. Indicate on the response card or call the church office to show your interest in having your pet blessed.

Piecemaker News: Please mark your calendars now for the Piecemaker’s Annual Open House, Friday, November 16 and Saturday, November 17 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. You are invited to join us in Punch Hall for refreshments and a display of the many quilts, wall hangings, table runners, placemats, bags, and seasonal and gift items that we have made over the past year. All items will be for sale and the proceeds will go to our church and its’ missions. The fall is always an exciting time for the Piecemakers. Our numbers increase weekly as we welcome back our snowbirds and those returning from vacations. We always have fun seeing what projects others have been working on over the summer and sharing new patterns and ideas. The Piecemakers meet on Wednesdays in the East Wing from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. All are welcome to join us in our work or to stop by to see us at work. Our mission is “to support each other in fellowship and love as we create quilts for our babies, shut-ins, and friends of Grace United Methodist Church who need comfort; and to make items for sale to assist our church financially.” If you know of someone in the congregation who would like to receive a visit and a comfort quilt please let the Piecemakers know. If you have a son or daughter returning home from active duty in the military, please call Carol Simpson at 497-5460 or Audrey Tamblingson at 497-5478. The Threadcatchers quilting circle meets every Friday 9am – Noon in Room A8. For information call Lorry Stover at 485-0094.

News from the

Folks, the Trustees have been busy trying to find ways to lower our bills. The following is of interest: -Turn off the photocopier when you leave- a photocopier left on overnight wastes enough energy to make about 1600 copies. -Turn off your computer monitor- a monitor left on over-night wastes enough energy to print about 800 pages. By turning off your monitor energy consumption can be reduced by 50%. -Leaving the lights on in an empty office overnight wastes enough energy to make about 1000 cups of coffee! -Save 10% of an air-conditioner electricity bill by turning the thermostat down 1 degree in winter and up 1 degree in summer. -It is cheaper to use and electric blanket than to heat the bedroom with a heater. In addition to monetary assistance, physical help is always appreciated on any of these projects: please contact Gene Stover at 941-716-0636.

The Bible is central to our faith, but many people are intimidated by its scope and size. The Story gives us a way to journey from Genesis to Revelation together in 31 weeks so everyone understands God’s story and how their story intersects with it. If you get a chance, find some time to read these passages during the week. The following themes will be shared in worship and study. October 7 The Battle Begins; Joshua 1-2, 6, 8, 10-11, 23-24 October 14 A Few Good Men..and Women; Judges 2-4, 6-8, 13-16 October 21 The Faith of a Foreign Woman; Ruth 1-4 October 28 Standing Tall, Falling Hard-Saul; 1 Samuel 1-4, 8-13, 15 November 4 From Shepherd to King—David; 1 Samuel 16-18, 24, 31; 2 Samuel 6, 22; 1 Chronicles 17; Psalm 59

We’ve had a great first several weeks! The children (and their parents J) are all settling into the routines of preschool. We’d like to thank all the parents and staff who came out for the playground work day. We got all kinds of clearing and cleaning done. There was a deck built for our stage area and the playhouse

area got a new fence and carpeting (which was donated by Montgomery Carpets!). Our very popular Dairy Queen nights have begun. This month the date is October 18. Purchase a tasty treat from 5:00-8:00pm and the preschool will receive 10% of all sales during that time. It’s not too early to start thinking about our annual Dinner and Silent Auction. This year it will be held on November 10 at Plantation Golf and Country Club. Tickets may be purchased at the preschool – they are $50 per person or $90 per couple. This is our largest fund raiser so we hope you will mark your calendars and plan to attend.
