Students are constantly connecting with others. Between school, family, friends, sports, and other extracurricular activities, they interact with a number of people in their everyday lives. Feeling connected to their peers is a priority for students, especially as they establish their own identities. The greatest gift we can give our students is the opportunity to grow in their understanding of scripture and their relationship with God. This month in Sunday School we will Dive Deeper Into…Genesis! How we are made in His image, Trusting Him, Keeping Promises, and Meeting Challenges. On Wednesday we will do a unit on Prayer. These activities will encourage students to make the connection to their everyday lives.

I can’t even believe we are already into the new school year! The summer went by so fast. We are back on our season schedule with KIDZ Club and snack supper every Wednesday. Snack supper starts at 5:15 and KIDZ Club is 6-7:15. (Parents are not required to stay, but are welcome) Children’s Church is during the 9am service and Sunday School is 10-11:15. This month we will be talking about Joseph & his brothers, Joseph in Egypt, Joseph saving the day and Joseph & his brother reunited. We will see how God acts behind the scenes in Joseph’s and our lives. God has the greater plan.

Sunday pick up and take home ministry is a great outreach to our homebound and shut-ins and we are in need of drivers! This ministry enables them to come to church to worship God with their fellow Christians in faith. We are flexible with your schedule! If you are interested in volunteering in this ministry outreach, please give Trina a call 488-1374.

Sunday Morning Team

We have seven volunteers that open and lock up the church on Sunday mornings. This is saving GUMC funds because we do not have to hire someone to do it. Many thanks to the folks volunteering in this ministry. If you are interested in joining this ministry, please contact Jay Geerdes at 941-485-2634.

Ministries

We sometimes hear through casual comments of church members who are in assisted living, rehabilitation, or are home bound. Then it begs the question: How many are there that we don’t know about?

Please, if you know of someone in assisted living, rehabilitation or homebound (even if they have a caregiver), call the church office with their name and location. We want to make sure we are not missing anyone and we want to do a better job in reaching out to our homebound members. Thank you for your assistance.

Grace is a Stephen Ministry congregation. A Stephen Minister is equipped to provide high-quality, confidential, Christ-centered care to people who are hurting. If you are called to be a Stephen Minister or are in need of a Stephen Minister, please speak to the Pastor.

Greeters 11 AM Service We need Greeters to help welcome people to Grace before the Traditional Service at both the front door and the back door. The time is from 10:30 to10:55. Everyone can greet, whether you're a new member or a long time member, come regularly or not so often. Also, if you attend the Contemporary Service and want to mingle and greet at a particular time, let us know. To volunteer, call Betty Jo Shiell 497-7854 or Mary Chambers 493-9644.

SUB-VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITES

NO experience necessary; we will train you. Volunteering consists of answering the phones, greeting and directing people to the correct staff member. There may be some light filing and copying. You are welcome to bring a book to fill the quiet moments.

We have some temporary office sub openings: Monday 2:30-4; Wednesday 2:30-4 and Friday 2:30 – 4 for the months of September and October.

If you are interested in working any of these, please let Trina know. Trina may be reached in the office at 488-1374.

We are kicking off a hospitality team here at Grace to help create an atmosphere of warmth and welcome. In order to give a great first impression to guests, we are asking for a few of you to assist our team in the following areas: 1. Ambassadors (floaters who circulate in the worship center before and after service greeting others) 2. Door Greeters 3. Information desk assistants (answer questions, give directions, before and after service) 4. Parking Lot Greeters 5. Coffee hosts If you are interested in any of these positions or if you just want to learn more about how we are trying to make Grace a more welcoming community, please see Jane Ann Jennings. Venice and Englewood Lions Club Vision Program provides free eye care and glasses. There is a large box located in the front office (main building) where you can donate your used glasses and cell phones.

Saving Campbell’s Soup Labels AND

Box Tops for Red Bird Mission

For soup labels: the whole coupon needs to be cut out, including the code on the label and the red part that says `1 coupon’.

For Box Tops: it’s the little label that says ‘Box Top’ including the expiration date. Turn them in at the front office. Henderson Settlement uses the box tops for school supplies for the two schools that are part of the mission. On some snacks, there is a note on the front of the bag that a box top is there. It is usually very small on the back.

This is a mission that is part of the Red Bird Missionary Conference located in a very poor section of our great country in SE Kentucky. With labels that we might just throw away, this mission is able to get items that help the children and adults they serve. For other information contact: Dorris Ann Wasson 941-412-0847.

Country Store If you are of the mind set to clean out your treasures and give them away please don’t forget the Country Store. Whether you are buying or donating, all proceeds go to help United Methodist women support women and children around the world. Our proceeds have gone to:

10% to Grace United Methodist Church, Pledge to United Methodist Women Organization, Family Promise, Cuba Sister Church, Summer Camp, Red Bird, and many other needs around us.

November 15, 2016 – YBOR CITY TOUR AND DINNER AT THE COLUMBIA RESTAURANT. Cost: $90; departs GUMC at 1:30 PM and returns approximately 10 PM. Come tour Ybor City with a guide to tell us about the culture and history of this city within a city and will include a visit to a Cuban bakery!

December 8, 2016 – PUNTA GORDA CHRISTMAS LIGHTS TOUR Cost: $70 departs GUMC at 3:30 PM. Dinner will be at Captain’s Table at 5 PM to 6:30 PM. At 7:30 PM the boat will cruise the canals to view lights. We will return to the church about 10 PM.

February 20-22, 2017 – EVERGLADES TOUR Join us as we travel to south Florida for an amazing Everglades Tour!

Save the date! March 14 - Annie will be at the Van Wezel. Reservations and Tickets on sale in September.

The United Methodist Men

The United Methodist Men have an active and fun filled schedule for 2016-2017. The Pancake breakfast will be launched under the leadership of Larry Bender starting on Saturday, October 1, 2016, and we will be serving breakfast monthly the 1st and 3rd Saturday through

April 15, 2017. Volunteers are needed and should show up no later than 7:30a.m. for their assignments .

The Men will meet the first Monday evening of each month, beginning October 3. Your cost is the same $10 as it has been during the past four years. Your first time guest will be entitled to their first free meal! The Monthly Program leaders are the following: Vice President-Jim Tilton October and February; Travel Chairman-John Milton November; Secretary-Paul Cline December and March; Treasure-Larry Bender January; President-Gary Beck April and May. The general membership should talk directly to the above Program Chairperson's if they have suggestions for a speaker.

‘The quilters’ are busy sewing, filling the cupboards in anticipation of our big November sale. New members are always welcome. Stop by the East Wing any Wednesday between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm to meet us and see what we do. If you are looking for a special handmade gift, you are welcome to shop from our completed projects or to place a special order.

Our mission is “to support each other in fellowship and love as we create quilts for our babies, shut-ins, and friends of Grace United Methodist Church who need comfort; and to make items for sale to assist our church financially.”

If you know of someone in the congregation who would like to receive a visit and a comfort quilt please let the Piecemakers know. If you have a son or daughter returning home from active duty in the military and would like to have him or her receive a quilt, please call Carol Simpson at 497-6738 or Audrey Tamblingson at 497-5478.

September Greetings! It's time to resume regular Wednesday night Chancel Choir rehearsals. Our merry band of singers will begin meeting each and every Wednesday evening at 6:30 on the 7th of September. We have enjoyed a bit of a break during the summer months, but now it's time to get back to work singing every Sunday. Mary Jeanne Moorman and I, along with several other members of our choir, attended the annual choral music reading conference in Sarasota in August, where we chose and purchased several exciting and beautiful new anthems for our music library. We will begin learning new music as well as working on anthems for the upcoming seasons, including Christmas, at our very first rehearsal. Yes, believe it or not, Christmas Day, which falls on a Sunday this year, is only seventeen Sundays away (hard to believe, ain't it!). As always, we welcome any and all singers who wish to join us each Wednesday night and Sunday morning as we lead the congregation in song. It is a tremendous commitment, but we feel it is well worth the time invested. Contact me if you have an interest in being a member of our Chancel Choir

The GraceTones Handbell Ensemble will not begin regular rehearsals until October. Watch next month's NEWSCASTER for details regarding handbell rehearsal start-up. Again, if you have an interest in being a ringer, kindly let me know.

It has been a busy summer at GUMC for the Board of Trus-

tees. It is a constant job to keep the grass mowed and hedges

trimmed during the summer. Lawn mower repairs were

needed. Drainage ditches needed to be cleaned. The large oak

tree by Punch Hall was trimmed. Plants and flowers were

planted around the church. Gutters and downspouts were

cleaned and some repairs were made. New traffic signs were

installed. Air conditioner repairs were needed and completed.

The bus and van also needed maintenance work to keep them

running safely. Problems with the fire alarm system in TFEC

were corrected. The carpet in TFEC was cleaned and the

floor in Punch Hall was cleaned, waxed and buffed.

Televisions were installed in the narthex. New lettering was

installed on the main doors and new room signs were also

installed. A new plaque was installed in the memorial garden.

A private contractor was hired to fertilize the plants and grass

in the memorial garden on a monthly basis. New flooring was

installed in the west wing. An interior decorator will be

providing some plans to upgrade the chapel and parlor. The

concrete pad for the pergola will be completed by September.

And the work continues.

Freda Boone Scholarship For Grace Summer Camp has been set up for boys and girls to attend our Grace Summer Camp. We have been blessed by Freda for so many years at our church. She was a charter member of Grace. Because of her love for children, it is our honor to have this scholarship in her name. If you find it in your heart, funds can be added to the scholarship in Freda’s name.

Kindly consider enhancing the beauty of our worship areas by placing flowers on the altar. Flowers can be given IN MEMORY OF or IN HONOR OF loved ones or friends.

Bouquets are $35.00 each and are yours to claim after the 11:00 AM service. Sign up on the flower calendar in the hallway by the staff offices.

Groups Continued

A brick may be engraved in memory of loved ones. In order to maintain consistency throughout the walkway, memorial brick will be engraved with your loved one’s name, year of birth and year of death. Money received from the purchase in excess of memorial brick cost will be used for the continued maintenance and upkeep of the Memorial Garden and Walkway. Orders for brick will be batched in increments of no less than five so it may take some time for your brick to be placed in the walkway. A dedication ceremony will be held quarterly. We will notify you of the date and time should you wish to attend.

Forms are located in the Church front office. Return the completed form and check in the amount of $100.

If you or a loved one goes in the hospital, please call the church office at 488-1374 and notify us. Clergy no longer have access to the patient listing.This means that our church and Pastor will not know if one of our church family is in the hospital unless someone calls the church office and notifies us. The Pastor and others visit the hospitals Monday through Friday, on the weekends and in emergencies.

POLICIES: These policies are in place to ensure space and equipment will be available to you and your ministry and applies to everyone, including the congregation & staff.

1. Room Reservations: Any time you wish to use any rooms or equipment on Campus the schedule needs to be checked and paperwork filled out for the office and custodian.

2. Groups currently using rooms: If your group needs a larger space, a different date, time, or is not meeting, we need to know so we can be sure your needs can be met.

3. Table reservations: If you wish to have tables or easels in the TFEC lobby or Narthex, paperwork is required.

4. Bus/Van reservation: If you wish to use the bus or van for your ministry, please get with the office manager. Insurance paperwork must be submitted 10 business days prior to driving and the schedule needs to be checked.

Thank you/Follow up: Lots of good has resulted out of the Westboro Baptist Church announcing their picketing of Grace. We had several groups step out in support of Grace Church and we showed them love and compassion. MISSION STATEMENT:

At Grace United Methodist Church, We welcome each person. We share the love of Jesus. We spread His grace to the world.

Whoa! We had a great start to our new year. We have added several new staff members for the new school year: Lauren Raines will be a two-year-old teacher, Theresa Hawkins will be a three-year-old teacher and Lynn Lamar will be our new kitchen

manager/cook, Alli Carvalho will be an aid in the pre-two classes. We are excited for this new year and are sure God has blessed us!

Dairy Queen nights are back! Every fourth Thursday from 5:00pm – 8:00pm is Grace UMC Preschool nights. Come out and enjoy dinner or a tasty treat and the preschool will earn a portion of the sales. Proceeds will go towards updating classroom equipment that is in desperate need of replacing.

Identi-a-kid will be here on September 1 & 2 to make ID cards for families. This is especially important if your child is lost or worse. This card includes a photo and fingerprint that law enforcement can use for identification purposes. They will be here at 9:30 each morning.

We will be closed on September 5 for Labor Day.

Regular meetings for our annual auction have started. Our next meetings will be September 7 & 21 at 6:30pm in Room 108 of TFEC. We welcome all volunteers to help with this great event.

The preschool will be closed on September 23 for the FLAEYC conference. This is the Florida State version of the NAEYC national conference. This year we have 15 staff members going to Orlando to learn all the new practices and teaching tools for our little ones.

BOARD OF TRUSTEE’S SPECIAL NOTICE

Village on the Isle requested at a meeting with our BOT to inform us of their Campus Master

Plan!

They want access to a number of our parking lot spaces across the street. We as the BOT are

in agreement that we are in the position of strength and no decision has been made!

Future discussion places conversations regarding the use of Church property under authority

of BOT.

Any conversation regarding the sale of Church property of any amount/size would require Trustee, District, and Church Council input and approval!
