GEOPAK Review

In the calendar year 2008, there will be 4 releases of GEOPAK software:

8.8 (Service Pack 4)

XM (Service Pack 1)

We have customers on different versions and attempting to make migration plans. So we thought it would be good idea to take a quick review of where we’ve been over the last year.

Windows Vista

This version of GEOPAK was not certified on Windows Vista. However, we have regression tested it under Vista and found only one major issue:

QM will not work in this version under Vista.

File Format Changes

• COGO (.gpk ) - The format will only change if the user takes advantage of the new functionalities in COGO. Even then, the GPK will open in older versions, but any information that was stored using the new capabilities in 8.8 may not be readable in the older version.

At present there are no plans to produce another 8.8 Service Pack. This should be the final release of GEOPAK 8.8.

FAQ regarding GEOPAK 8.8

Question: Will GEOPAK 8.8 run with PW Athens?

Answer: Although not officially certified with PW Athens (since PW Athens was not out when it was released), we have done some regression testing with this combination and there doesn’t seem to be any problems.

D&C Manager Enhancements

• Added a configuration variable to automatically load a predefined standard file format for the computation results option "Table".

• Added the ability to control the label for the POT at the beginning and ending of an alignment by setting a configuration variable.

• Added support for labels placed by Design and Computation Manager to use the text character as defined in the MicroStation preferences for the degree symbol.

• Added the ability to control the placement of the VPC and VPT labels on Profiles.

Plan/Profile Sheet Composition

• Added Support for the “New Level Display Options” for Reference files in Plan/Profile Sheet Composition. When the sheet files are created, the Plan/Profile Sheet composition application honors whatever setting is defined in the preferences of the motif file or current file settings.

Quantity Manager

• Provided a configuration variable to define the location of the QM configuration file. This will allow the QM configuration file to reside on a server and used by all users in the company. – GPK_QUANTITYMANAGER_CFGFILE

• Added support for using UNC paths in the QM configuration file to define the location of reports, XML files etc.

Proposed Cross Sections

• An option has been added to “Disable View Updates” when processing cross sections. This option prevents the screen from updating and greatly increases the speed at which proposed cross sections and earthwork will process.

• When processing proposed cross sections or earthwork, the user may now select the “Escape Key” to terminate the process. A prompt will be issued allowing the user to choose to accept the abort or continue.

• Iterative Velocity has been added to reports generator.

• Added ability to specify a base flow as an option to a linked drainage area.

• Added the ability to label multiple items at one time using selection sets.

Using MS enhancements with GEOPAK

• Although GEOPAK XM doesn’t provide a mechanism for setting Element Priority and Element Transparency within the D&C Manager it does honor these settings if they are defined in Level Manager.

• Transparency and element priority allows you to easily see the various elements in a file.

User Preferences > COGO Job Directory

With ProjectWise activated, if the user selects a PW folder (e.g. PW:\Projects\Route32\), the folder will be automatically converted to the appropriate local working directory for the selected PW folder.

This will allow users to check and/or copy out their GPK files from PW.

Added the COGO Window/Output File option.

Using the Window Option is the standard behavior where all resulting output is written to the COGO Window.

Using the Output File option will significantly increase the speed of importing XML files.

When mapping points via the SMD, the text/symbol/cell elements that are mapped will now honor the MicroStation key in "AnnotationScale ADD".

Question: Will GEOPAK XM run with PW Athens?
