Class Assignments for 2012-2013The Garden Gate Staff and I will soon begin the process of developing drafts of class lists. We take this task very seriously anwill use a carefully articulated process in placing students. Our goal is to provide each teacher with a well-balanced,heterogeneous group of children and to provide each learner with an optimal learning environment. The following are someconsiderations, which are made in placing students: Balance of boys and girls; Positive working relationships among studentsHeterogeneous (mixed ability) learning groups in all classrooms; Social needs of individuals and groups of students; Class

configurations (size, combination classes, etc); Learning needs of students; Leadership needs within all classrooms; Specialcircumstances.

ts important to note that if your child was not placed in a combination class for 2011-2012, they may be placed in one for2012-2013. For more information about combination classes, including answers to frequently asked questions, please come the School Office for a handout.Decisions we make, with regard to your childs placement, reflect our best judgment as to whendividual children will be the most successful. The 2012-2013 class lists will be posted after 4:00 p.m. on Friday, August 17 inront of the school. The first day of school is Monday, August 20. It will be a regular schedule day for students, and all students

must be in attendance in order to retain their place at Garden Gate.

Control Summer Screen Time by Setting Limits for the FamilyYou've probably heard the experts advice: Limit kids screen time to two hours a day or less. That includes watching TV, usingcomputer for fun, and playing video games. For most families, that's easier said than done! It helps to:

Explain that the whole family is going to focus more on exercise and less on sitting around.Commit to being a role model. That means parents will watch no more than two hours a day, too.Keep track of viewing and physical activity. How much time does your family spend looking at screens? Being active?Combine activities. Do sit ups while watching a show or turn commercial breaks into "movement breaks".Set other limits. Keep the TV out of your child's bedroom and make meals TV free. When you watch together, discuss thshows and advertisements critically.

Avoid using TV time as a reward - or taking it away as a punishment. These habits make TV more attractive.

Dismissal TimeParents, please remember that there are two designated waiting areas on campus where we'd like you to wait for your 4th or 5

grade student to be released from class: Under the shade structure (lunch tables) or at the tables in front of the Cafe Windowsnack tables). Please do not wait in the hallways, as low noise, such as conversation, can be disruptive for classes still insession. Similarly, for safety and security reasons, students are not permitted to play on the play structures or the blacktop arafter school. Instead, please have your children wait, seated, with you. The Garden Gate Staff appreciates your support withmaintaining our learning environment and keeping students safe.

PropellersDo you wonder how to connect better with your children? Do you wonder what matters to them, and how you can assist them grow up to be healthy, caring and responsible citizens? I encourage you to try a "propeller" - a question intended to sparkconversations with your children. Try it around the dinner table tonight!

This week's propeller: Whats your favorite outdoor activity? Do you think its important to spend time outdoors? Wor why not?
