    SCHOOL SITE COUNCILThe School Site Council (SSC) is a team of administrators, teachers, students and parents working together for schoolimprovement. We will have two vacancies for parents on next year's council. There are two candidates running for the positions:Chanchal Sahai and Shaila Hegde. Ihave had the opportunity to serve on the Executive Board of the PTA for 7 years and chaired or been involved in numerouscommittees including Communications, Membership, Safety, Social Events, Fundraising, Book Fairs, Nominations, and Traffic &Safety. I have taught Spectra Art and Project Cornerstone and helped in the classroom. My educational background is in Biologyand Law. The SSC plays a vital role in keeping the school environment healthy and conducive to learning, and given the opportuto serve, I will strive to work toward that alongside the teachers, staff and parents.

    SHAILA HEGDE - I am Shaila Hegde, mom of Akhil, a Third Grader and Anika, a Kindergartener. I am involved in ProjectCornerstone , I am a Room Parent and a Spectra Art helper this year at Garden Gate. Also, I have volunteered at the Book Fair,Walkathon, International Day, Direct Donation and Fall Celebration. I have my Bachelors in Science from India. I want to join the Sto get an opportunity to know what goes on in our school, and to be informed about the important issues affecting my child'seducation.,

    STAR TESTING DATESThe California Standardized Assessment (STAR)testing dates are being published so that parents canplan ahead. STAR Testing will be held from April 30,2012 through May 11, 2012 for 2nd - 5th grades (with

    make-up testing May 14th -18th). Your child will needto take the entire test in order to receive completeSTAR scores. Please do not schedule family trips ormake appointments during these times. It is veryimportant that our students are at school during thetesting.

    BEFORE YOU MAKE TRAVELPLANS

    At the end of the school year studentsmust be in attendance on the last dayof school, June 12, 2012 to retain theirplace on the roster for the 2012-2013school year. At the beginning of theschool year, students must be in

    attendance on the first day of school, August 20, 2012or they will not retain their place on the roster. Whenyou are making travel plans, please consider thepossible ramifications. If you have any questions,please contact Student Assignment at (408) 252-3000ext. 110.

    HOME LUNCHESTo encourage responsibility, childrenshould bring their lunch with them toschool in the morning. We

    recommend that each child havesome money in his/her lunch accountso that in the event of a forgottenlunch, the child can purchase a hotlunch. Please remember to mark all lunches broughtto school with the childs name and room number andplace it on the cart outside the school office by 11:00a.m. They will be delivered to the classroom lunch cartby student helpers. Lunches cannot be delivered to theclassroom or lunch tables by parents. Students are notpermitted to wait by the office for parents to bring alunch to them. This is against our school safety policy.So be sure to place the lunch on the cart before 11:00a.m. Thank you for your cooperation.

    LOST AND FOUNDPlease check the lost and foundshelves located at the back of theadministrative building for yourchilds lost items. We have manylunch boxes, plastic containers,sweaters, hats, etc. that may belongto your child. Items that are not claimed will bedonated to a local charity. Thank you!

    ABSENCES AND TARDIESAttendance and punctuality are important inestablishing good behaviors and building responsibilityin young children. Please ensure that your child is atschool everyday and that they arrive on time. If your

    child will be absent or late, please call the attendancehotline (252-5414, ext. 6) by 9:00 a.m. the day of theabsence. The attendance hotline is available 24 hoursper day, seven days per week. It is extremelyimportant for you to call the attendance hotline toreport your childs absences. The office is responsiblefor ensuring accurate reporting of attendance to theDistrict Office and the State.

    If you are aware of upcoming medical appointments,you may call several days in advance and leave amessage on the recorder. If your child will be late dueto a medical/dental appointment, please remember torequest a note from the doctor indicating the date of

    the appointment and return it with your child. If yourchild arrives at school after 8:00 a.m., they must reportto the school office for a late slip before entering theclassroom. Under state law, three unexcusedabsences or tardies may be considered truancy.

    IMPORTANT REMINDERS:For the protection of the students, please rememberthat students are not to be on the Garden Gatecampus before 7:45 a.m. There is no adult supervisionuntil 7:45 a.m.Please do not congregate outside of the classroomswhile school is still in session. This is very disruptive toboth the teacher and the students and could be a

    distraction from valuable learning time.Every Tuesday is early dismissal day. Pleaseremember that all a.m. Kindergarten students aredismissed at 11:10 a.m. and all p.m. Kindergartenstudents along with students in grades 1-5 aredismissed at 1:30. Please remember to pick up yourchildren promptly.

    SCRIP AND eSCRIPRemember to purchase Scrip on Tuesday afternoonsbetween 1:15 - 1:45 p.m. and also on Friday morningsbetween 7:45-8:15 a.m. Scrip is spent just like cashon everyday expenses. eScrip also provides an easy

    way to earn money for the PTA. Participatingmerchants donate a percentage of purchases to theschool. Parents (also family and friends) should visitwww.escrip.com to register their credit/debit cards,Safeway Card, and PW Supermarket Card. Be sure tospecify Garden Gate Elementary School (eScripnumber is 139188329.) For those who dont haveinternet access, please fill out and turn in an eScripregistration form (available during scrip sales times orin the school office).

    The 29th Annual Cupertino Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates community, culture and supportsCupertinos Sister City relationship with Toyokawa, Japan. This years festival features delicious

    Japanese and American food, outdoor entertainment by Taiko Drum groups, Classical JapaneseDancers, Martial Art Schools, musical groups, and more. There are indoor Japanese Cultural Displayworkshops, and musical performances at the Quinlan Center, adjacent to Memorial Park. This year alfeatures a special childrens play area with hands-on activities. Parking is available at DeAnza Collegfor free. This event helps to support the Cupertino-Toyokawa Sister City Exchange Program. For

    DE ANZA COLLEGE SUMMER EXTENDED YEAR PROGRAM 2012De Anza College, in partnership with the Cupertino Union School District, will offer the Extended Year Program this summmornings only, from June 18 to July 13, 2012. There will also walk-in registration available from May 29 to June 5, 2012.
