Choose the Best Books to Read Aloud to Your ChildChoosing books to read with your child can be fun and rewarding. It can also beoverwhelming as you face shelf after shelf of library books. How can you find the best booksto read aloud? Here are some tips:

Does this book relate to something that interests my child? Would she like to look at these

pictures? Is the book similar to something we have enjoyed in the past? Will this book teach my child some new words? Each time you read a book with your child, you are helping her expand her vocabulary. The best books do this so easily that childrendont even know they are learning.

If this book is a story book, is it a story that my child could tell later? Could she act it out? Oneof the reasons that fairy tales remain so popular after hundreds of years is that they tell stories children love to hear again anagain. Is this book sturdy enough for my child to handle? Is the print large enough so she can read it easily? Heres a rule of thumbThe younger the child, the more sturdy the book needs to be.

    Reading Teacher, September 2010.

Effective Discipline Includes Using Logical ConsequencesConsequences are a natural part of life. If your child refuses to eat dinner, for example, he may be hungry. But sometimesconsequences dont occur naturally, and parents have to create them. When possible, make them logical. This involveschoosing consequences that are related to behavior. Good logical consequences are:

About the same size as the behavior. If your child dawdles for five minutes, he might miss five minutes of a fun activity. Butmissing the whole activity wouldnt be logical.

Likely to improve a behavior. They should help your child recognize mistakes and learn how to do better. When I waste timedont get to do what I planned.

Fair to your child, even if he doesnt agree. When consequences make sense, kids are less likely to resent them. They canrespect consequences without liking them.

PropellersDo you wonder how to connect better with your children? Do you wonder what matters to them, and how you can assist theto grow up to be healthy, caring and responsible citizens? I encourage you to try a "propeller" - a question intended to sparkconversations with your children. Try it around the dinner table tonight!

This week's propeller: Which of your friends encourage you to make good decisions? How do they encourage you
