GARAGEBANDANDBEYOND

YOUTUBE CHANNEL WITH HIGH-END GARAGEBAND TECHNIQUES

Page 2: Garageband Tutorial

Lewin Barringer presents a series of videos on his YouTube channel about how to make professional-sounding recordings with just GarageBand

His videos deal with not the basic ins and out of the software, but deeper methods on how to get your tracks sounding very high-end

Most videos revolve around Lewin in the corner of the screen, with a larger visual of the program itself, as he delves into different filters and effects (often centering on compression filters) and demonstrates how to use these effects to get a more pro-grade sound. He uses tracks that he recorded with his own band to demonstrate his methods.

The channel has over 4 million combined video views, began over 4 years ago, and still produces weekly videos to this day, a mix of reviews and the continuing tutorial series

GaragebandandBeyond is what I picked because it’s what I’m focusing on. I have plenty of experience in GarageBand as it stands, but my current recordings, even with high-end musical instruments and a decent amount of talent, still come up just short of sounding professional. This YouTube channel is dedicated to that prosumer market, people who aren’t really professionals in the given field, but have the time and/or money to act as though they are. GaragebandandBeyond is in-depth in this aspect, without being too technical or jargon-y.

The biggest problem with Lewin’s tutorials is the amount to which they center around the use of products which are not a part of GarageBand itself. Lewin uses a particular compression filter a lot which he says is vital to his sound, but this filter is not included in GarageBand, rather, it is a third-party addition to the program which costs $80. Prosumer indeed. Lewin also talks about different microphones to use for different situations, which also will run you a few dimes, if you really want to get the sound Lewin is pushing.
