Reflections for LentIn the 4th century, St Augustine of Hippo wrote his famous work “Confessions.” It was like his diary of philosophical, theological and spiritual growth; wrestling with his life experience and the reality of God.

For anyone who has experienced the sport of wrestling, or any kind of self-defense, you would know it is physically and mentally demanding. It requires a lot of training and conditioning, there is the risk of injury, and sometimes the greatest lessons are learnt when you are defeated in a match, because even in defeat, you take another step toward your next victory.

When one engages in mental, emotional and spiritual reflection, similar claims could be made. It is demanding, requires discipline, training and conditioning, there is a risk you will be hurt, and more important than anything else is the willingness and determination to get up off the mat when you feel defeated.

The season of Lent provides us with an opportunity to focus on the emotional and spiritual wrestles in life; to improve our skill, our resolve, our determination, and our commitment to respond to the challenges of life in a godly way.

One of the most famous statements in St Augustine’s wrestle was a realisation that was summed up in one statement; “God, you have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in you.”

God BlessRev Chad

Communication between Home and SchoolThere are a number of communication avenues used in the secondary school. At present, we have noticed the most efficient is email. Staff are more than open to any form of communication. However, please be aware with teaching commitments staff may take 24 hours to respond.

Formal parent/teacher interviews are scheduled for Term 3 once written reports have been received. If you wish to meet with teachers prior to Term 3 please contact your child’s tutor teacher or the subject teacher directly.

Changes to Parking and Student Pick-up Area – Mahers Lane Campus

Since the start of the year there has been a significant increase in the volume of parents collecting their children after school from the Mahers Lane Campus. The safety of our students is paramount, as such we are going to trial some changes to the parking and student pick-up areas in an effort to continue to ensure the safety of our students. We need your support to do this.

A trial system similar to the passenger collection area of the Coolangatta Airport will see the introduction of a ‘No Stopping Lane’ combined with an extension to the student collection area. These trial measures combined with barriers to separate students and vehicles, and new road marking and signage, should address the increased flow of traffic in a safe and effective manner.

To assist with these changes we need your support in the following ways;

· Please do not leave your vehicle when collecting your child in this area;· Please only stop to collect your child in the designated area;· Please follow the directions from staff to move along should you be in the designated pick-up area and your child has not arrived promptly;· Please proceed with caution when driving on school grounds;· Please indicate when changing lanes and pulling into and out of parks;· Please consider the time it takes to collect your child and plan accordingly;· Please understand that this system works best when students are waiting for parents to arrive, not when parents are waiting for students to arrive. Consider agreeing to pick up your child slightly later than 3:30pm to avoid ‘peak times’ which include bus arrivals.

This will be trialled effective from Tuesday 29 March, immediately after the Easter break, until the end of term when it will be evaluated.

I look forward to your support and patience during this trial as we continue to ensure that every student arrives and departs in a safe and efficient manner.

Tweed Shire Youth CouncilLindisfarne has become a participating school in the recently convened Tweed Shire Youth Council. This is a student leadership and civic program, that involves young people in local government decision making.

Three student nominees Eden Tokatly (Year 11), Meg Whiticker (Year 12) and CJ McCreery (Year 12), were successful in becoming our School Liaison Officers. Eden and Meg attended the first meeting held on 24 February and were pleasantly surprised at the potential of the Council to act as a voice for young people. As a collective group, the local students will propose and pursue community projects that may be considered and enacted by Tweed Shire Council.

Recording Studio Project #2Calling all students as producers, musicians, engineers.

At the start of this year, twelve songs were submittedinto the second studio recording project. Mr Lock and Mrs Lush spent four days workshopping with each of the talented students and ensembles. Each student worked on the lyrics and music for their songs, focusing on developing this work for future studio recording projects.

Out of those 12 students, three have been chosen to record their songs. On Thursday 17 March the

recording sessions commence and run all weekend. Students are invited to register their interest in working behind the scenes on the production side of the recording. This album is set to release mid year 2016. Stay tuned for official release dates!

Open ClassroomsLast week’s newsletter outlined the many avenues for communication between school and home.

One key way in which to foster strong relationships,is through our open classrooms. At least once per term, teachers will formally invite parents into the classroom to join their children in classroom activities. This opportunity allows students to share part of their learning journey discussing their goals and achievements. Be sure to check your child’s class BLOG for dates and times.

Six of our Lindisfarne young ladies spent Saturday morning learning how to become a netball umpire. It takes a lot of hard work and confidence to be a successful umpire, so congratulations to Olivia Moloney, Ebony Richards, Georgia Edgar, Ashleigh Budge, Gia Milroy and Ellie Engel who will hopefully be umpiring ten year olds at the beginning of the season. Elli Engel, Mia Henry and Georgia Maynard enjoyed a coaching session on Saturday afternoon with Queensland Firebirds and Australian Diamonds stars of the game, Kim Ravaillion and Gretel Tippett. Amongst other skills, ex-basketball player ‘Tippett’ taught the girls how to do a lay-up and ‘Rav’ showed the girls how to defend and dodge.

Kim Ravaillian explained to the group that she was actually not selected into her NSW State team for three consecutive years although never gave up. Her determination paid off after playing one season in the ANZ Championships League when she was selected in the National squad. Hope for us all!

Congratulations to Georgia who was presented with a training shirt for her efforts on the day.
