Dear Parents

It has been a busy and productive week at Lindisfarne although our school has been much quieter with Years 7 to 12 students involved in camp week programs and our Year 3 students on camp towards the end of the week.

Programs such as camp week are invaluable in developing the capacity of our young people. One of the key employability skills for the 21st century world of work is the ability to communicate and work with others to complete tasks.

This includes being able to set goals, demonstrate good listening skills, share thoughts and ideas with others, exhibit appropriate behaviour in various situations, identify behaviours that cause conflict, exhibit positive self-concept, describe the concept of community, respect others and acknowledge our own efforts and the efforts of others.

Whilst these skills can be developed within a classroom they are enhanced by the experiences that students have beyond the classroom and beyond the School in programs such as camp week.

Likewise, it was very pleasing to see Year 5 and Year 6 students engaged in the open classroom program this week. This was a good opportunity for students to explain their learning to their parents and for parents to be actively involved in their child’s education at Lindisfarne.

On Wednesday evening I was able to attend the AGM of the Association of Independent Schools NSW in Sydney. Guest speakers included the Honourable Adrian Piccoli, Minister for Education NSW and Paul Kelly, Editor-at-Large on The Australian. Minister Piccoli spoke on the importance of education for all children who attend school in New South Wales regardless of where they go to school. This cross-sectorial approach was appreciated by the School Principals in attendance. Paul Kelly gave an insight into the current federal election and the different political parties’ positions on education funding and policy.

Our P&F Association have been busy preparing for the Trivia Night to be held on Friday, 17 June at Kingscliff Bowls Club. Please start to get your tables together for what promises to be a most entertaining evening. I am looking forward to joining members of the School community and supporters of the School at this special event.

Finally, with the cooler weather approaching a reminder for all students to have the appropriate jumpers and warmer clothing for the cooler mornings we are beginning to experience.

Kind regards,Stuart MarquardtPrincipal

Drama WorkshopQAGTC has a wonderful drama workshop opportunity for gifted students (aged 5-14 years) and coinciding (free) parent/teacher information and support session on gifted children who are reluctant to read and write.

Drama presenters Kim Shepherd and Amy Skene will take the drama workshops whilst facilitator Tanya Forbes will present the support session.

When: Saturday, 4 June (2.00pm - 4.00pm)Where: A.B. Paterson College10 A B Paterson Drive, Arundel 4214.BUILDING 24 (adjacent to the car park)

Is your daughter excelling at Maths? Does she love Science, Technology, Engineering or the Arts? Then she might be interested in the the STEAM Residential program.

Whilst most students have been on camp this week, doing something completely different to their usual school routine, next week they will be back into the thick of study and preparing for exams and assessments. I hope the poem that follows might help some students (and parents) with perspective, so that we all do our best, but don’t get too stressed or worried over results and expectations. Life doesn’t always go according to our plans, but likewise, that doesn’t mean it’s a waste or a fail.

One Solitary Life He was born in an obscure village

the child of a peasant woman. He worked in a carpenter shop

until he was thirty.

He never wrote a book, he never held an office,

he never went to college, he never visited a big city.

He never travelled more than two hundred miles from the place where he was born.

He did none of the things usually associated with greatness; He had no credentials but himself.

When he was only thirty three

his friends ran away. One of them denied him.

He was turned over to his enemies and went through the mockery of a trial.

He was nailed to a cross between two thieves.

When he was dead he was laid in a borrowed grave

through the pity of a friend.

Twenty centuries have come and gone and today Jesus is STILL the central figure of the

human race. And the leader of humankind’s progress; All the armies that have ever marched,

All the navies that have ever sailed, All the parliaments that have ever sat,

All the kings and queens that ever reigned put together,

have not affected the lives of humankind on earth as powerfully as that one solitary life.

This week I had the opportunity to attend Autism Spectrum Conditions: Fundamentals and Practicalities, a full day Professional Development course facilitated by the Association of Independent Schools of NSW (AISNSW).

I was brought up to date with the major changes in the diagnosis of autism and gained a better understanding of its classroom implications, many of the support strategies being relevant to enhance the learning of all students.

This course provided a welcome opportunity to network with primary and secondary classroom teachers as well as Heads of School and Learning Support from schools in our local area and Sydney.

It was pleasing to confirm that the documentation, differentiation, provisions, adjustments and strategies being implemented at Lindisfarne are in line with the recommendations made.Kathryn LearyYear 2 Teacher

CAPA News National Art School HSC Intensive Studio PracticeCongratulations to Eden Tokatly who has been selected to attend the National Art HSC School Intensive Workshop. The selection process is extensive and the program is designed to enhance and extend students’ technical and conceptual knowledge.

The National Art School has the longest continuing history as a public art school in Australia. This is a NSW Board of Studies endorsed course for HSC Visual Arts students. A variety of expressive forms can be selected, working with ceramics, digital imaging, painting, photography, printmaking or sculpture. Eden has chosen to work in Black and White Photography. After being put forward as one of the best performers in Visual Arts, Eden underwent a rigorous process to be accepted into the course.

Darcie White, a Year 11 Visual Arts student, also participated in a weekend workshop at the National Art School in Sydney on the 14 and 15 May. In this workshop she learnt all the necessary techniques and skills to construct her own complicated three-piece mould. Darcie explored a variety of materials and developed a deep understanding of the foundations of mould making. The weekend has helped her develop the sophisticated skills needed to enhance her HSC Major Body of Work next year. This experience was very rewarding and she thoroughly enjoyed working in the professional ceramic studios.

If you would like to learn more about the National Art School and the special programs they offer school students studying the Visual Arts please visit their website https://www.nas.edu.au

ANATS QLDLindisfarne hosted the Australian National Association of Teachers of Singing (ANATS) professional development workshop on Sunday, 22 May. The topic “Puberty Blues: A Pedagogical Approach to dealing with the Male Changing Voice” was presented by Anthony Young from St Lawrence College, Brisbane, who is currently working in the field and undertaking his PhD in this area. His presentation was based on not only pedagogical approaches, but discussed social issues that boys face at that stage of maturation. Lindisfarne student Fraser Crane conducted a vocal presentation which was then critiqued by ANATS delegates and provided feedback.

MasterclassOn Friday 13 May selected music students were given a rare opportunity to workshop their skills with a musical director of the highest calibre. Mr Max Lambert flew up from Sydney to work with our students on vocal and performance technique. This workshop was well timed in order to refine performances ahead of the album launch ‘All at Sea’ on Saturday, 14 May. Students and music staff were appreciative of the insight and feedback given by Max and hope this will be the beginning of further collaborations.
