Message from Student Leaders

Hello, my name is Charlie L and I am your boys school captain for this year. I am going to be sharing with you one of my favourite subjects

and that is English. I like English because I get to express and show great ideas through paper. I enjoy free writing because you can show

others and make creative pieces of writing. Our school teaches English very well, in ways like phonics, reading groups, handwriting or free writing. So that is a little bit about my favourite subject English.

Hi, my name is Emily, and I am the girl’s school vice-captain for 2021. I am going to talk to you about Math’s. Our school loves math’s and there are so many opportunities for you to get better at it, at Holland

Park. For starter most days of the week every class is meant to do a power point which focuses on what they are learning, it is called rapid

recall. And/or a number talk which is a number sentences on a white board and you have to work it out without using a book. Also, if a student tis excelling is math’s a lot they could be moved up a grade,

but it depends on their marks. If they are in grade 5 or 6 and get chosen by Mr Campbell some students compete in a math’s quiz

against other schools. Also done by Mr Campbell for grade 6ers is a math’s Olympiad, where there are 5 questions, and you have to answer them in 30 minutes. Miss Ybarlucea says “I feel at HPSS,

mathematics is fun and challenging. It builds problem-solving skills and critical and creative thinking. Mathematics at HPSS allows us to

make real life and real-world connections and can help us build our curiosity and ask questions.” Overall, I believe HPSS has a great math’s program that help develop a love of math’s. Thankyou.

AFL Cup

Hello! I’m Emma Fingland, I am the 2021 AFL Girls Captain at Holland Park.

This year, our school sent two teams -Boys & Girls - to compete in the Streetsmarts AFLQ Schools Cup. Our AFL cup teams started at a round robin; we were very excited and ended up winning all our games and advancing into the Regional Finals round on the 7th of September at Sandgate.

On Regional Finals day, the HPSS Boys made it all the way to the Preliminary Final before being

eliminated in a close contest. They gave their best effort all day and the Year 4 & 5 boys are already looking to next year's AFL Cup competition.

In the girls competition, our first three games were amazing - winning all of them by at least a goal. In our fourth game we got surprised and versed the team that won states last year. We did

not win that game but we all tried our best. Our last two games were an awesome experience, as before our last two matches, we saw that we were 2nd on the ladder and if we won our next two - we were into states! We won our last two games and we all knew that we were in states.

This Team trained so hard for this and we finally got there. We all can't wait for state finals on the Sunshine Coast next term, hopefully we can bring back a big trophy!

A big thank you to our parents for organising us and for Mr Shackcloth & Ms Savage for taking

us to AFL Cup 🙂

Interschool Tennis Cup

The Interschool Tennis Cup was held on Sunday 12th September at the David Turbayne Tennis Centre, East

Brisbane. The event is a participation-based grassroots tennis event

run by our school tennis provider – Tennis For Kids. Open to all children who have received tennis coaching (from

any coach), the event was a great opportunity for kids to play alongside their friends and represent their school. Almost 200 children from 9 schools participated on the

day. Holland Park State School was represented by 31 players across Red, Orange and Green Ball divisions.

All the kids demonstrated wonderful sportsmanship and represented the school with honour. And for the record

we are pleased to announce the following results for Holland Park State School…….

Red Ball Dvision (Grade 1-3) – WINNER Orange Ball Division (Grade 4-5) – SECOND

Green Ball Division (Grade 5-6) – THIRD Overall Champion School - WINNER

Congratulations to all our representatives – Not only on the result but also on your sportsmanship and behaviour on-court.

Year 2 Street Science Incursion

Year 2 students enjoyed the very entertaining and educating scientist Raphael do fun

experiments using force and introducing us to chemical properties. We made our own rockets using a special chemical mixed with water to make a tube fly into the air.

From our Community Liaison Officer

For in-catchment families, and those who have siblings commencing

in Prep 2022, please complete the enrolment forms and return them to the admin office no later than Friday, 8th October, 2021. I am in the

process of entering the information onto One School and the sooner these are completed the sooner the prep classes for 2022 can be formed early in Term 4.

Most importantly if students are leaving at the end of 2021, it is

imperative that we know as soon as possible. For the families that I have already contacted, if a decision has been made could you please email me as soon as possible.

From Excellence Expo

Last Wednesday afternoon, our school held our annual

Excellence Expo. It was a great afternoon and night, where all students in our school

were able to showcase their gifts and talents. It was pleasing to see so

many of our students and parents come along and

visit the displays of student work and attend the medallion ceremony in the

afternoon.

Congratulations to all medallion and highly commended winners. Congratulations also to all the students in the school for their hard work in entering the school categories. You did a great

job and we are all very proud of you.

Thank you also to all staff including teachers, teacher aides and

support staff for all your dedication and hard work to make the event a success. Your efforts are much appreciated.

Have a great holiday

News from HPE

Gymfest It was a Holland Park State School army of gymnasts!

66 students forming seven teams participated at the 2021 Gymnastics Queensland GymFest. A fantastic result with all seven teams receiving a silver medal for

their overall performances. Each team competed in three different routines during the competition. It is very

pleasing that our school-based lunchtime gymnastics program is matching the results of dedicated gymnastic clubs and I am very impressed with the sportsmanship

of all of our teams.

It was also wonderful to see 31 HPSS students compete for Brisbane TeamGym and Tumble at the event. Overall, we had 97 students attend over the two sessions. A big

thank you to Mrs Goldberg and Ms Evans for their help at the competition. You made a big event very easy!

It was fantastic to have our first ever boys’ team and they were quickly backed by all involved.

Here are some of the competition Judges comments –

Team Willow – Beautiful floor choreography! Team Levitate – Awesome choreography and loved

the audience engagement! Team Masters – Loved it boys! Keep up the great

work!

Team Fireflies – Great work girls, fantastic acrobatic skills! Team Crystal Sparks - Great work guys, looks like you have all worked so hard!

Team Together – Loved the floor choreo! Team Diamond – Awesome height in your mini tramp routine. Well done!

I would also like to acknowledge the parents and carers for supporting this event.

A fantastic effort from everyone!

Australian Diving This week, 26 students attended a Diving Australia Talent

testing session at the Chandler Dry Diving facility and then at the diving pool in Sleemans Sports Complex. Students were challenged through a variety of dry based and pool-

based diving skills. The two-hour session allowed students to experience a variety of developmental skill and drills.

This was all done under the direction of key Diving Australia coaching staff. It was an amazing trial session and I would like to acknowledge the parents and carers for supporting

this trial.

How awesome would it be to have someone from HPSS in diving at the 2032 Olympics! You just never know…..

Cambodia Club Our container campaign is still going strong. Creating change is not an easy task! However, slowly

but surely, we are seeing a real change in the way that our school embraces the Containers for Change program. We commenced our campaign in January 2020 and to date we have collected over 17,000 containers, I think this is an amazing result! Thank you to all the students involved

in the Cambodia Club, your enthusiasm for sustainability is creating positive results within our school!

Japanese Club

The Japanese Club held their annual Japanese restaurant to coincide with

the Asia Week celebrations. Planning has been in place from early in the year and students have spent many hours preparing. This year our

restaurant was located on the hall deck area overlooking the pool and views to Mt Gravatt. The club was so excited to have 26 staff members participate during their lunch break. It was a fabulous time with a variety

of menu items. I would like to acknowledge the following students for their contributions in making a very special and successful restaurant,

Mia C, Maya D, Abbey T, Evalina P, Ava G, Romi V, Meg S, Evelyn S. Thank you also to

our wonderful staff members that supported our Japanese restaurant.

Asia Week

This is our sixth year celebrating Asia week and it is wonderful that our students have the opportunity to

participate in a variety of Asian traditional games. I am very impressed with the number of students and teachers that supported this celebration and the many awesome Asian

related costumes that were worn throughout the week. Students have had the opportunity to learn a variety of

traditional games from Singapore, Uzbekistan, Brunei, Philippines and we also included the Solomon Islands as we

have recently created a school partnership. It was wonderful that we could connect India’s Holi Festival of Colour through the P&C’s Colour Explosion Fun Run and to support our recent Asia Education Foundation’s BRIDGE

partnership, one of the activity areas was designated to the Solomon Islands.

Great work everyone! Term 4 Aquatics

Aquatics will commence week 1, term 4. In order for our aquatic lessons to meet the required curriculum activity risk assessments, it is necessary to have a volunteer spotter at all aquatic’s

lessons. In the event that a volunteer spotter is unavailable students will be offered an alternative physical education lesson.

Please note that Prep aquatic lessons have a higher ratio for aquatics and will require four in-pool volunteers in addition to the supervising teacher and poolside spotter. Additional information has

been distributed via email. Please note that Covid-19 requirements will be followed and adjusted to meet any new restrictions. All students will require a swimming cap and sun shirt as per our school sun safe policy. Goggles are optional.

House Captains

What an outstanding effort from our House Captains during the P&C Colour Explosion Fun Run. They were such a great help throughout the day and were at school early to set-up the event and

backed up again with pack-up at the end of the day. Fantastic everyone!

News from our Library

Australian Reading Hour This week the whole school celebrated in Australian Reading

Hour on Tuesday, 14th September. To celebrate, we had a stop, drop and read event. Students had to carry around a

book with them for the day, ready for when stop, drop

and read was announced. It was fantastic to visit many classes to see each student engaged in reading

simultaneously!

International Dot Day It was also International Dot Day on the 15th (ish) of September. International Dot Day is based on the book The Dot, written by Peter H. Reynolds and is about

celebrating creativity, courage and collaborations, allowing students to make their mark on the

world. To celebrate International Dot Day, some library classes participated in a shared reading of the book The Dot and expressed

their own creativity making their own dot artwork.
