Language Land aims to establish collaborative working between Speech and Language Therapists and Early Years Educators. It is a package of training and language teaching resources which promotes the development of oral language. Nicola O Kelly and Donna Smyth from St Anne’s and also Amanda Whelan and Laura Kennedy from Kiltipper attended the training and will continue to run this interesting programme with mentoring from the Speech and Language Therapist. What is Language Land about? Language Land is set around an imaginary journey to a place called Language land. Children learn good listening and talking skills. We look forward to more enjoyable weeks with Jack and his magic carpet, songs and many more activities. PARENT EVENTS AT ST ANNE’S (TRACY- PARENT SUPPORT COORDINATOR) The local dental health nurse Sheila visited the service to speak with the children about looking after their teeth. We invited parents in for coffee and an information session about ways to protect their children’s dental health and Sheila addressed individual concerns from some of the parents. Parents were also invited into the service to speak with our Speech & Language therapist Caitriona, who gave an interesting talk on how to promote speech development at home. Both St Anne’s and Brookfield hosted wonderful Christmas celebrations for all the families – we had visits from Santa, songs and lots of goodies which we hope everyone enjoyed. Learning Stories in Fledglings Youthreach: Amy, our student from Marino has been doing work on our Learning Stories. She gathers all information from a particular activity or event that has happened within the pre-school including photos and presents them in a way for parents to see how their child’s learning occurs and where ideas for activities come from. This has been a great resource for us as our time is so limited. Now that we are up and running we plan to continue updating our learning stories after Amy leaves us at the end of January. We thank her for all her hard work!
