What is Fledglings?What is Fledglings? Fledglings is a national charity which aims to improve the lives of disabled children, and give relief to

their carers by searching for and supplying through one source a range of products and services to

meet individual needs. This new product brochure contains a range of good value items selected to

meet children’s and families’ needs - NOT just to make a profit; indeed, currently only about a third

of the income we need to operate Fledglings’ service comes from our trading activity. We are a

charity providing a personalised Helpline, regular E-news, this brochure, and a product search and

development service - all free of charge - which is why we rely on grants and donations.

From the beginning in 1998 our service has focused on meeting the needs that parents have identified. We were then at the forefront of the development of neckerchief/bandana bibs, now widely available, and we have continued to talk to manufacturers and suppliers to develop new product solutions ever since. Over the past few years we have also been involved in developing with a parent the excellent interactive website www.netbuddy.org.uk. Do take a look! So, please continue to ask us those tricky questions which are hard to deal with alone and we’ll do our best to find answers. We always welcome feedback and recommendations and value stories about how our products have helped. We especially treasure photographs of your children which keep constantly in our minds the reason we are here - to make life better for them and for you, their parents. Dear Parents and Carers, Autumn 2011 Welcome to our fourth brochure of products for children with special needs. We have tried to retain here our most popular products and hope you will find the new additions we have introduced will bring added benefits for you and your children. In particular we have included some new chewing aids, specialist clothing and some electronic items which we hope will help keep your children safe. In response to your requests we are also delighted to include in this brochure, for the first time, a supplement of items more appropriate for older children. Handy Cup & Lid

Similar in design to the Doidy Cup this large clear cup with a broad base, an angled side and two large handles helps many children to drink independ-ently for the first time.

Explora Active Straw Cup

A versatile easy drinking cup with flip top and silicone straw. The hygiene cover keeps the straw clean while the insulated base keeps drinks cooler for longer. Non spill and leak proof, it is especially suit-able for children who throw or drop their cups.

Doidy Cup

This small light cup is suitable as a first cup for many children. The angled side allows the child to anticipate when the drink will reach the mouth which helps to achieve independent drinking.

Light Two Handled Cup with Two Lids

A light cup (50g) suitable for children who find lifting difficult. One lid has a spout and the other is concave with a straw hole through which children may also sip their drink. This sipper lid is rec-ommended by speech therapists as it helps children to use the muscles around the mouth.

Flexi Cut Cup

This cup has a cut out to prevent neck extension when drinking. It may be squeezed to change its shape, so is helpful for parents who need to assist their children to drink by directing liquids carefully into their child’s mouth.

Spill-proof Beaker

This beaker has a circular valve, making it possible to drink from any point on the rim while also preventing spills. Helps those who drink in a reclining position and those who have difficulty sucking and swallowing. It comes with an illuminated base. Not suitable for hot or fizzy drinks. The light base must be washed by hand.

Easy Hold Glass

The ridged sides of this plastic cup make it easy to grip. The lid with long spout can help children who have tongue thrust. The hole in the spout is large enough to take a straw and/or thickened liquids.

Cup with Built in Straw

This cup has finger grips, a screw top lid and an integral straw which does not move and reaches liquid at the bottom of the cup. This is very beneficial for chil-dren with limited mobility or neck control. 13fl. oz.

Go Anywhere Teat

This new teat may be used with virtu-ally any bottle or carton. Particularly helpful when travelling with dietary feeds in cartons or for older children who use a teat but for whom baby bot-tles and cups are undignified. Straws with a One Way Valve

These straws have a valve which allows fluid to flow one way only i.e. when sucking stops, drink still remains in the straw so helping children to drink even when they have little breath. The Pat Saunders Straw is re-useable, can be sterilised and has a clip to prevent the straw moving. The Disposable Pack of 10 multicoloured straws comes with a reusable Straw-berri holder to stop the straw from moving.

Straight Cutlery

Comfort Grip Cutlery

This cutlery for older children and adults has handles made from a soft rubberised material which facilitates good grip. The tines of the fork are not so sharp as some similar products making them safer to use.

Caring Cutlery - Junior and Senior

This cutlery has small finger holds to help children learn how to hold their cutlery correctly. These well tried and tested items are frequently recommended by OTs.


Dycem

A non-slip material with a variety of uses. It grips on both sides so can be used under plates etc to prevent movement and spills or on desks to keep stationery in place. Dycem Strips may be wound around handles to improve grip. The Dy-cem itself may be cut into shapes and stuck onto other surfaces e.g. chairs to prevent slipping. Wash with warm soapy water to increase tackiness after con-stant use.

A non-slip mat with a variety of uses. Ideal for meal times. Wash in soapy water to replenish textured grip when necessary.

Plastic Curved Spoon & Fork

This angled cutlery with a plastic polypropylene spoon or fork end meets the needs of those who need safer softer utensils for eating. The bowl of the spoon is larger than the average teaspoon and the chunky soft grip handle is comfort-able to hold.

Manoy plate

Oval shaped with a slope on one side and a straight side on the other making it easy to slide a spoon in at one end and lift out food at the other. The plate also has a lip at the straight side making it easy to hold. Small is 15 x 22cm, large is 19 x 28cm.

Gripware Round Scoop Dish

Made of white plastic, this dish measures 8” across,has a high back and a low front and is suitable for use by children with co-ordination difficulties or the use of only one hand. 20cm diameter.

System Plate

A large plate with straight sides. The 3cm rim makes it easy to hold to keep the plate steady. The yellow plate is particularly suitable for children with visual difficulties. 24cm diameter in-cluding rim.

Gripware Partitioned Scoop Dish

A melamine dish with 3 compartments and high dividers to help children scoop out food easily. May be particularly helpful for children who dislike eating foods of different kinds on the same plate. 22cm diameter.

Scooper Plate with Suction Ring

This plate has one low side and one curved high side so a child can manoeuvre food onto the spoon more easily. The suction ring holds the plate in place to prevent slipping. It is easily detachable from the base so will not prevent children from lifting the plate and emptying the contents! 17cm diameter. Only dishwasher safe when suction ring removed.



Stay Warm Feeding Dish

This non slip dish has a base into which warm water can be poured and sealed in before the meal is served, thus enabling food to stay warm for longer. 22cm diame-ter. CAUTION: Do not use boiling water in this product and never leave your child un-attended when eating.

Non Slip Plate & Bowl with Weighted Base

This high quality dinnerware meets the needs of young people with a good appetite who need utensils which hold generous help-ings. The utensils attach to a weighted base with a screw action, so are difficult to move or lift. They are therefore very stable, pre-venting spills and making mealtimes easier to deal with particularly for children with movement difficulties and carers of those with challenging behaviour. We have had very positive feedback on this equipment especially from schools.

Katchkin

Popper fastening. These fashionable bright cotton napkins with waterproof backing and a popper fastening at the neck provide good cover for clothing at mealtimes. Although not as absorbent as most of the other feeders featured on page 10, they are more dis-creet and may be particularly appealing when eating out.

Paint Apron

This lightweight nylon paint apron with sleeves fastens with Velcro at the back. It is less robust than the Pembroke apron but is particularly suitable for more delicate children. It may be washed and drip-dried quickly and easily and is suitable as a sleeved feeder if required.

These bumpers fit inside a special sheet and are then in-flated. They help children with different needs and in differ-ent situations and could also act as soft sides if their bed is placed next to a wall. Also, children who may have a night-time seizure would be protected from falling out of bed. When trav-elling these may be particularly helpful as they are lighter than most alternative prod-ucts. This multifunctional system has the following functions: A) Tracker: set your safe distance and your monitor will alert you if your child strays too far (max distance 100m). Magnetic Locks

Airclip - Plastic Door Ajar Clip

This plastic clip is very popular with parents of autistic children. It fixes a door in the ‘ajar’ position and may be an alternative to a ‘stair’ gate. It can be used to keep children out of danger in the kitchen or bathroom or to give siblings privacy. It may also keep a child safely in his/her own room when required. Complete Light Switch/Socket Covers

Plastic covers that fit over the entire electrical fittings of a light switch or socket. It was specially developed for disabled children, is light-weight (7.5 kg with footplate) and has fully swivelling manoeu-vrable front wheels and folds simply in an umbrella fold for ease of handling and storage to the size of 117 x 25 x 21 cm. Ear Band-It and Ear plugs

Swimfin

This swimming aid was recommended to us by a parent. It is a fin shaped buoyancy aid that sits on the back leaving arms to move freely. Children are encouraged to immerse themselves further into the water – the more submerged the Swimfin is the more sup-port it gives, encouraging the child to swim independently. As chil-dren love pretending to be a dolphin or a shark, the Swimfin makes swimming more fun for all children. It should, however al-ways be used under su-pervision.
