From a Marianist Community of student brothers open to visitors for Sunday Eucharist, Queen of Apostles Community emerged as a non-territorial parish on August 28, 1973.

Continuing in the tradition of the Marianist Charism, we come together each week as a family of Catholic, Christian believers, to worship our God in the Eucharist with song &

praise and to share in the breaking of the Bread. In so doing, we proclaim our willingness to build a community of love and to be the holy people God calls us to be.

If you are visiting and worshipping with us for the first time, we extend to you our warmest welcome. Our prayer is that your worship experience will be uplifting and Spirit filled.

We hope you will visit us often and worship with us!

(If you’d like more information about us or would like to join our Community, please fill out the form on the back cover and drop it in the collection basket!)

NOTE: If the form on the back is missing, email [email protected] with your name, phone number, address and we’ll contact you about joining us.

Marianist Doxology May the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be glorified in all places

through the Immaculate Virgin Mary.

STEWARDSHIP & GIVING

1st Sunday in Lent: “I have now brought you the first fruits of the products of the soil which you, O Lord, have given to me.” (Deuteronomy 26:10). This line from the Old Testament offers two challenges. First, do you give to God from your “first fruits”, the best that you have to offer, or do you give from what is leftover? Second, do you recognize that everything you have has been given to you by God? Ask God for a grateful and generous heart, every day, in all circumstances.

Deuteronomy 26:4-10: Moses instructs the Israelites to offer the first fruits of the land as a thanksgiving to God and to continue this offering every spring as a ritual for remembering God as the source of all blessings. The festival of first fruits eventually became connected with the celebration of God’s deliverance of Israel out of bondage. Passover recalls God’s liberation of the chosen people. Here is established the liturgical requirements of the feast and has been used in Passover celebrations for thousands of years.

Romans 10:8-13: Paul discusses the relationship between inner faith and its outward expression. He makes clear that both inner belief and a confession of faith are required. Outward expression alone is not enough; there must be a genuine inner trust that God has conquered death in Jesus. But the belief must also be verbalized. An unwillingness to voice one’s faith that Jesus is Lord belies a weak faith indeed.

Luke 4:1-13: The temptations Jesus faced are familiar to us. We often desire comfort for ourselves, and a life free of effort in meeting our basic human needs. We’re also tempted by the promise of power and sometimes sacrifice our values to pursue it. And we sometimes desire to test God, thinking we can determine how God should communicate with us. Jesus chose to identify with the poor by being hungry, with the oppressed by rejecting displays of honor, and with the unpretentious by refusing to demand that God save him. In fact, Jesus’ entire life and his death reflect these values.

Ministers Taking Eucharist to Those Not With Us

Presider: Let us send these ministers to those who could not be with us.

Response: Receive the Body of Christ for the nourishment of those who are not here with us. Assure our friends of our prayers and blessings throughout the week.

LITURGY PLANNING MEETING TODAY: Si Lounge (following Mass) We’ll be planning for Holy Week liturgies. All are welcome to attend. If you have questions, please contact Katie Gibbs ([email protected]) or Chalsi Campbell ([email protected]). We’d love to have you join us and see how the process works. It's not complicated. So, if you’d like to be involved, we have plenty of people willing to help you plan.

PRESENTATION on SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER CRISIS: Terri Blanken will host a series of presentations from the Catholic and Lutheran response to the substance use disorder crisis – dates are Tuesdays, Mar 12th, Mar 19th, April 16th, 7:00-8:00 PM, Family Room, Si Lounge. The series will include personal stories of how drug or alcohol use disorders affect people’s lives, relevant scripture readings and reflection, discussion questions and prayer. Since the topics at hand are intense and sometimes personal, each week begins with a reminder that we are on holy ground when we share and receive these stories. Terri will also provide community resources that are available for support families in crisis. Please contact Terri DIRECTLY at (937) 723-0151 or [email protected] for more information or if you are interested in attending.

QAC COMMUNITY CONVERSATION & LUNCHEON: Sunday, Apr 7th. We’ll gather as a community after for a lunch provided by QAC and a community conversation following. Dr. William Johnston, Associate Professor in Religious Studies at the University of Dayton will present to us the development of liturgy from Vatican II until the present. Afterwards we will have an opportunity to have a community conversation to explore the implications of his presentation for us as individuals and as a community, especially our liturgy.

Dr. Johnston is from South Bend, Indiana. He received his B.A. in Theology and English, M.A. in Theology (Liturgy) and Ph.D. in Theology from the University of Notre Dame. He has served in church ministry in the Diocese of Richmond, VA, Archdiocese of Baltimore, MD and the Diocese of Grand Rapids, Michigan. During his work in those settings, he played a variety of roles in the development of three documents published by the U.S. Catholic Bishops – Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us, The National Directory for Catechesis and Co-workers in the Vineyard of the Lord.

Dr. Johnston joined the faculty of the Department of Religious Studies at UD in 2006 with specific responsibilities in the area of pastoral ministry. He currently serves as the Director of the MA Programs for the Department.

Everyone is invited. In order to provide adequately for the lunch and appropriate space for our sessions, everyone is asked to sign up in the vestibule by Sunday, March 24th. Lunch will be provided with funds resulting from the One Faith, One Hope and One Love campaign.

SPIRIT NEWSLETTER: Do you have a creative side? Do you like to write or draw? Why not share your talent with our community by writing an article or drawing a picture for the QAC Spirit. Send your writing or drawing to [email protected] by the 18th of each month. CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES (CRS) RICE BOWL PROGRAM: A CRS faith-in-action program offering opportunities for us to engage daily with the spiritual pillars of Lent - prayer, fasting and almsgiving. It’s an opportunity for us as a community to come together and reflect on what it means to live out our Gospel call to go out and encounter those most in need. Please take a Rice Bowl home, they can be found in the vestibule.

We are invited us to encounter the needs of the world with the hope of the Resurrection, reflecting on how this encounter can be transformative. We will see how our Lenten prayers, fasting and almsgiving can respond to Pope Francis’s invitation to Share the Journey by supporting those worldwide who are forced to flee their homes to find safety or better opportunities. As we prepare for this holy season, it is especially important to come together as a family and reflect on the crosses of hunger, poverty and war that our brothers and sisters forced to flee their homes carry. In so doing, we stand alongside these members of our human family, supporting them as the Gospel calls us to do. Please consider these suggestions in your family’s Lenten plan: Use your CRS Rice Bowl and Lenten Calendar daily to guide your prayer, fasting and

almsgiving. Read the Stories of Hope and daily reflections to inspire your Lenten journey—and guide your

Lenten almsgiving. Prepare simple, meatless meals on the Fridays of Lent to eat in solidarity with our brothers and

sisters around the world.

MEDITATION OF THE DAY: "The fast of Lent has no advantage to us unless it brings about our spiritual renewal. It is necessary while fasting to change our whole life and practice virtue. Turning away from all wickedness means keeping our tongue in check, restraining our anger, avoiding all gossip, lying and swearing. To abstain from these things— herein lies the true value of the fast." ~ St. John Chrysostom

ENCOUNTER GOD THIS LENT!: "During these forty days of Lent, let's allow ourselves to be known, all the way through! Nothing to hide from, in ourselves, from ourselves, or from God." ~ Richard Rohr
