    Chapter # 1

    Socialization

Socialization is the process whereby the helpless infant gradually becomes a self-aware,

knowledgeable person, skilled in the ways of culture into which he or she was born.

Socialization is defined from different point of view, some of which are given below-

    Sci-Tech Dictionary:

    socialization

(psychology) The process whereby a child learns to get along with and to behave

similarly to other people in the group, largely through imitation as well as group

    pressure.

    Encyclopedia

    socialization

the process whereby an individual learns to adjust to a group (or society) and behave

in a manner approved by the group (or society). According to most social scientists,

socialization essentially represents the whole process of learning throughout the life

course and is a central influence on the behavior, beliefs, and actions of adults as well

    as of children.

Socialization can be of two types-

    Primary socialization

Primary socialization occurs when a child learns the attitudes, values, and actions appropriate

to individuals as members of a particular culture. For example if a child saw his/her mother

expressing a discriminatory opinion about a minority group, then that child may think this

behavior is acceptable and could continue to have this opinion about minority groups.

    Secondary socialization

Secondary socialization refers to the process of learning what is appropriate behavior as a

member of a smaller group within the larger society. It is usually associated with teenagers

and adults, and involves smaller changes than those occurring in primary socialization. e.g.

entering a new profession, relocating to a new environment or society.

According to G.H.Mead Mind, self and society that human beings begin their

understanding of the social world through Play and Game. He describes the process of

the development of self mainly with four concepts, like Role taking, The Generalized other

    and I and Me.

Role Taking: Mead noted that, infants and young children first of all developed by social

beings by imitating the actions of those around them. Mead called this Role Taking. The

child takes different roles he or she observes in adult Society.

The Generalized Other: This is the process of learning the values and moral rules of the

culture in which they are developing. By playing the role children go under the process of

The Generalized Other, which is one of the main concepts Mead proposes for

understanding the emergence of the social life in human beings. Through understanding The

    7

Generalized Other the individual understands what kind of behavior is expected, appropriate

and so on, in different social settings. The family, Baseball team, School and the society are

the examples of the social settings

    Agents of Socialization

Agents of socialization are the people and groups that influence our self-concept, emotions,

    attitudes, and behavior.

    1. The Family. Family is responsible for the youth and ..., among other things,

determining one's attitudes toward religion and establishing career goals.

    2. Education. Education is the agency responsible for socializing groups of young people

in particular skills and values in society.

    3. Peer groups. Peers refer to people who are roughly the same age and/or who share

other social characteristics (e.g., students in a college class).

    4. The Mass Media.

    5. Other Agents: Religion, Work Place, The State

    Facebook and its History

Mark Zuckerberg, 23, founded Facebook while studying psychology at Harvard University.

He is a keen computer programmer; Mr Zuckerberg had already developed a number of

social-networking websites for fellow students, including Coursematch, which allowed users

to view people taking their degree, and Facemash, where people could rate people's

    attractiveness.

    In February 2004

    Mr Zuckerberg

    launched "The

    facebook", as it

    was originally

    known; the name

    taken from the

    sheets of paper

    distributed to

freshmen, profiling students and staffs. Within 24 hours, 1,200 Harvard students had signed

up, and after one month, over half of the undergraduate students had their individual profile.

The network was promptly extended to other Boston universities, the Ivy League and

eventually all US universities. It became Facebook.com in August 2005 after the address was

purchased for $200,000. US high schools started signing up from September 2005, and then it

began to spread worldwide, reaching UK universities the following month.

As of September 2006, the network was extended beyond educational institutions to anyone

with a registered email address. The site remains free to join, and makes a profit through

advertising revenue. Yahoo and Google are among companies which have expressed interest

in a buy-out, with rumored figures of around $2bn (975m) being discussed. Mr Zuckerberg

has so far refused to sell.

The site's features have continued to develop during 2007. Users can now give gifts to

friends, post free classified advertisements and even develop their own applications - graffiti

    and Scrabble are particularly popular.

Some of the applications offered by Facebook are listed below-

    1. Top Friends. Flatter the users best mates by putting them in the Top Friends box

    2. Tetris Tournament. Play Tetris and reduce users friends' high scores to dust

    3. Training. App that tracks users fitness regime, and compares it to other friends so

    he/she can offer mutual support

    4. iLike. Barnstorming Music 2.0 application that let the user share music and show off

    tune knowledge in the competition

    5. Zombies. It's actually fun infecting even more

    6. My Aquarium. Users own virtual fishtank, which can only be populated by friends

    sending him/her fish

    7. Beers. Buy virtual beers for friends. Not as much fun as buying real beers in the real

world, but better for the users waistline

    8. SkypeMe. Make Skype calls from within Facebook, which makes the user a bonafide

Web 2.0 media node in own right

    Chapter # 3

    Implications of Facebook in Society

According to professional Social Network Writers and professional Social Network Services,

the comparatively open nature of information provided by Facebook participants and the lack

of confidentiality controls enacted, users are putting themselves at threat of both online

    (identity theft) and off-line (stalking).

Facebook enables individuals to articulate their social networks, present themselves, and

view each other's profiles, gather friends who can send messages on pages and maintain or

establish connections with others. This site is oriented towards romantic relationship

initiation, work related contexts, college student population and linking those with common

interests such as politics or music.

Participants can use Facebook to communicate with people they know off-line or to meet new

people. It is also possible for Facebook members to join virtual groups depending on shared

interests, learn each other's interests, hobbies, romantic relationship status and musical tastes

by browsing through different profiles and see what courses they have in common.

Internet has made our life easy and made us tech savvy. We use internet on our regular

educational, official, even in informal meetings and gatherings. Internet has different

implications on our society. Facebook is an example of social networking started few years

ago and spreading its implications both positively and negatively.

From interviews stated in the report we pointed out how facebook is influencing the young

generations. Facebook is providing informative and educative things to its users and they are

benefited from it. On the other hand facebook applications and privacy settings seem weaken

to many which may cause future problem any time.

In Conclusion it has been described clearly that like everything internet is playing a key role

in the process of Bangladesh. And in doing that it is proving a famous line of Sir Isaac

Newtons Law of motions -To every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
