DIFFERENT KINDS OF MEDIA INSTITUTIONS

Cinema:A theatre where films are shown for public entertainment in exchange for money. This is usually were big business movies are shown.TV: Television or TV is a telecommunication medium used for transmitting moving images in monochrome (black-and-white), or in color, and in two or three dimensions and sound.Film Festivals:A film festival is an organized, extended presentation of films in one or more cinemas or screening venues, usually in a single city or region. Increasingly, film festivals show some films outdoors. Films may be of recent date and, depending upon the festival's focus, can include international and domestic releases.

WHAT’S ON?

At our local cinema the ‘Odeon’ most films being shown are from the fantasy genre and do not have a specific sub-genre. This shows that the prevailing audience at the ‘Odeon’ are interested in films that play with their imagination and expand what they believe is reality. Other ‘Odeon’s’ are also screening the same and similar films, which prove that at the moment the fantasy genre is definitely a sale breaker.

INDEPENDENT CINEMA’S• Guildford picture palace- shows a variety of films

that have very different genres and choosing one would not be specific enough for the whole audience, their main audience is over 40s and those interested in non-mainstream films that come from a lot more multi-cultural backgrounds.

• The Electric theatre- The Electric theatre also shows a lot of films differentiated from the norm, critics find pleasure in going to these types of cinemas compared to bigger chains such as the ‘Odeon’.

• Even though big chains of cinemas are cheaper and easier to find, they don’t show the right amount cultural variety in their selection of film.

From searching a number of independent cinema sites it can be seen that drama films are increasingly popular among their audiences. This shows that the audiences of mainstream cinemas (the Odeon) differ from those that are independent. This could be due the fact that the films shown at independent cinema do not necessarily follow the same trends as mainstream cinema (they rarely choose to show the same films) as they try to appeal to a different audience. Their audience is more concerned with more real life events.

FILM FESTIVAL’S• Film festivals like play a lot of drama films similar to

independent cinema’s. at the Cannes film festival one of the most controversial film’s, la Haine, was screened during this the police officers doing security all turned their backs to the screen, La Haine rotates around les banlieues in Paris at the height of police brutality. By this film being allowed to screen it allowed the people of Paris to express themselves like they never had been able to before. Most films shown at film festivals are likely to win awards. This could be because that those shown are dramas so are the most common films and are the most popular with the audiences at the festivals. The Sundance film festival is similar because it promotes dramas as most prestigious than others.
