V Medical Education Convention

11th, 12th & 13th April 2012

The Medical Education Convention is the biggest convention organised for and by medical students in Spain. More tan 800 students from around the country took part in it during its 4th edition.

The Medical Education Convention (CEM, in

Spanish) is an anual national, now international,

event set in every medical student’s calendar in

Spain. It brings more than 800 students together

each year. With four years of experience, it is

completely organised by students. It’s main goal is

to train our students in those complementary

aspects of their medical education that are not

covered in school, giving us the oporttunity to

become better doctors in the future.

The Jornadas Estatales de Estudiantes de Medicina

(JEEM) is an event comprehended in the

convention during which representatives of every

medical school in the country gather together. It is

then that CEEM’s General Assembly is constituted.

It is the only representative body of medical

students in Spain and also coorganiser of our

convention.

The University of Murcia’s Medical School is almost

an institution in our University, with more tan 40

years of history and experience in medical training.

It has been qualified repeatedly as one of the four

most relevant schools in our country. One of the

main characteristics of our school is the promotion

of medical training in all aspects of cientific

knowledge. In this, de Student Council plays a very

important role serving as the centre of student

activity. We take on all kinds of projects that

motivate and give our students the incentive to

participate in their own training.

1

Being a doctor is so much more tan medical knowledge. It is a profession, a compromise with the community and a way of life. Medical training is structured in six years of medical school, giving us a very limited time to learn all about Medicine. This is why our college training is focused on giving us the ability to keep on learning during our professional life, leaving many necessary things out, ranging from pure scientific and technical knowledge to the most social and human aspects of our career.

2

Medicine is also a vocational career, which means our students are not like the rest of university community. Medical students are responsible and passionate about their training and also very conscious of the importance of the quality of their training for their future jobs.

This is the reason why our students ask for other ways of learning, giving us the oportunity to organise our convention. During it, we try to give our classmates the chance to become involved in their education and to learn all kinds of new things.

Medicine and Society Medicine is, above all, a social responsability. The correct performance of our Social Security System is a vital part of our Society, acting as an indicator of the level of wellness in the country. Health is not oly the correct function of the body, our social environment is an important part of it, influencing our illness, recovery and attitude in life. These are some of the many reasons why a doctor has to be able to evaluate and treat their pacients globally.

Medicine and Research Investigation is the base scientific advances. Today’s medicine is based on research and scientific evidence. As medical professionals we must know the importance of reasearch in order to mantain up to date with treatments and new techniques. This is one of the many things we will be lecturing on during our convention.

Medicine and the Environment The environment in which we live in has a direct impact on our health. It is the source of both wellness and disease. As doctors we must have the knowledge to see this impact and be able to change the factors that constitute a risk for our health. In our convention we will dedícate the time to talk about how we can become more involved in the protection of the environment.

Med icine and Medical Education As medical students we are very conscious of the importance of our training. We must search for the best way to become involved in our education but also, as future medical professionals we should learn to teach future generations. Learning and teaching are basic in medicine, and as such, we will be talking about the advances in this field.

Medicine and Poli tics Our National Health System is one of the best in the world and something to take pride in. It is this system that makes doctors resource managers, seeing as we decide which tests, treatments and therapies to use. It is important for us to know how the system works and learn how to use these resources in a responsable way, so as to ensure the system can be mantained.

The Medical Education Convention is a

national and international event that will offer 1000

spots for medical students around the world. It will take

place on the 11th, 12th and 13th of April 2012 in

Murcia. During these three days many activities will take

places, ranging from lectures and workshops to contests,

all containing scientific and medical knowledge. This

convention will also have open activities to anyone

interested in them, such as lectures.

It is also important to know that this event will take

place during our regional holidays. This allows us not

only to have the whole University to ourselves but also to

show our beautiful city to all students. We will also be

moving the activities to the neighbouring city of

2

Cartagena, making this a regional event and introducing all

kinds of new activities we wouln’t able to take on in Murcia.

Soc ial Plan

Every student event has to have a time for everyone to get to

know each other. We are all going to become doctors and part

of the same community, which is why it is of great importance

to have a great social plan, with all sorts of activities planned

for each night such as parties, contests and a gala ball.

Temporal distribution

All the activities will take place during the three days. For more

information see the following table or consult our webpage.

The Social Plan is an important part of the convention. Past experience says great friends meet during it.
