    PIBT

    PIBT provides alternative pathways to ECU for students who may not qualify for direct entry to a degree program and are looking for a supportive learning environment. PIBT bridges the gap to ensure students reach their goal of being an ECUgraduate.

    PIBT is located on both the Mt Lawley and Joondalup campuses of Edith Cowan University. The Mt Lawley campus is located five kilometres from the centre of Perth. The Joondalup campus is within a five minute walk from Joondalup train station, where a free shuttle bus service is also

    available to take you directly to the campus. PIBT offers pathway courses in business, communications and creative industries, hotel management, science (computing/IT), science (engineering studies) and science (health studies).

    PIBT ensures that all students have the opportunity to maximise their full study potential and achieve the best possible education outcomes. Our fully qualified academic staff have a wealth of expertise in education, both locally and internationally, and extensive university teaching experience.

    Since PIBT began offering pathways to ECU in 1994, thousands of Australian and international PIBT students have gone on to complete bachelor degrees, with many progressing further to complete masters degrees.

    Edith Cowan University (ECU) is known for its award-winning facilities and for being at the forefront ofproviding innovative education and training solutions.     Full-time PIBT English courses provide 2022 hours of English study per week in a classroom setting. Active learning is encouraged through a wide range of teaching methods, which are combined with modern materials and resources. A variety of assessment methods are used to monitor progress.

    Academic English Program

    The Academic English Program (AEP) is designed for students who plan to study at an Australian university or whoare interested in developing their academic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. This program is taught on ECUsMtLawleycampus.

    Course benefitsStudents have the opportunity to develop their language skills and enhance their studies in higher education.

    The course focuses on a mixture of communication skills and academic study skills.

    Entry requirementsStudents may take a placement test on their first day. Those who do not yet have sufficient language skills for Academic

    English are placed in a special class to bring them up to an appropriate level of proficiency.

    AssessmentStudents are assessed every two weeks. These assessments are designed to measure each students English ability in a variety of skill areas needed for university study. Every eight to ten weeks, students are also tested to determine their suitability for the next level of the course.

    Academic English ProgrampathwayStudents with an overall IELTS score of 6.0, with no individual score below 5.5, can complete up to 10 weeks of Academic English at PIBT and gain entry to an ECU degree course without requiring further English testing.* This is subject to meeting ECUs academic requirements. Students wishing to consider this option will need to apply directly to ECU.

    *Excluding Nursing, Education and Post-graduate studies.

  • IELTS Test Centre at PIBT

    The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) measures students ability to communicate in English through listening, reading, writing and speaking. It is designed for people who intend to study or work where English is the language of communication.

    With over two million tests taken every year, IELTS is one of the most popular English language tests in the world, setting the standard in integrity, research and innovation. PIBT is an official IELTS test centre in Western Australia and offers IELTS tests at ECUs Mt Lawley and Joondalup campuses.

    Preparation Course for IELTS*To help candidates become more confident with the IELTS testing format and achieve their full potential, PIBT has developed the Preparation Course for IELTS. This course is available to PIBT students and the general public.

    The Preparation Course for IELTS is held for two hours each evening, twice a week for four weeks. Note: the final session is split into academic and general writing sessions to cater for students needs. Students attend for one hour in the final class (15 hours in total). Participants will be given tips and strategies for approaching the test in a positive way to achieve the best results.

    The course is run by experienced English language teachers who can answer questions participants may have about the test.

    Study tours

    PIBT has a dedicated team with extensive experience in designing and organising both small and large tours for high schools, universities, industry, government delegations and special interest groups. Whatever your timeframe, group size and budget, we will work with you to design the perfect tour to suit your groups individual academic needs and leisure interests.

    PIBT study tours combine English language tuition with cultural and leisure activities in Western Australia. The English tuition component can be delivered in full-day or part-day modules, or a mixture of both. Activities can focus on a particular theme such as eco tourism, adventure, sport or Australian culture, or a combination of these.

    Supporting you while you study

    PIBT provides many additional services for students, including educational, personal and careercounselling.

    OrientationDay 1 for new students is orientation day. This consists of:

    an official welcome by the Academic Director or a representative

    an assessment test so we can place you in a class that matches your English level

    an information session on living in Australia

    a tour of facilities and classrooms.

    It is essential that you arrive by 8.30am for your PIBT orientation on your first day. This will be on a Monday and the date will be specified in your PIBT letter of offer. The information and testing provided at orientation will be crucial to your success in your academic pathway.

    If you are unable to arrive at orientation on time you must notify us as soon as possible. You may be required to commence the following Monday, which will mean missing a week of classes. No refund will be given for these missed classes. It is therefore very important that you arrive on time for your first-day orientation.

    Preparing to study at PIBTWhen you come to Australia, you will experience many differences to your home country. It is helpful to know some of the different aspects of life in Australia so you can plan effectively for this important transition.

    AccommodationThere are many accommodation options in Mt Lawley and surrounding areas, including homestay, rental and shared accommodation.

    PIBT uses the services of two companies to assist students with accommodation arrangements; WA Homestay Network and Perth Student Accommodation.     Homestay

    Homestay is a popular accommodation option for international students in Perth. Homestay hosts may be families, couples, single people or single parents with children. All hosts have undergone thorough police checks and have been selected to provide good quality facilities and also meals if required. Homestay hosts have specifically requested a student to stay with them, which means that every student will be made to feel welcome in their new environment.

    English is the language spoken by homestay hosts, which will help students improve their language skills. Hosts will also help with day-to-day issues such as transport, banking and shopping. The homestay experience provides a friendly environment where international students can live, relax and study in comfort and security.

    On-campus accommodation

    PIBT students have access to on-campus accommodation at the Mt Lawley Student Village, which features brand new five-bedroom apartments just a short walk from the university. The apartments are modern and fully furnished, with private bedrooms, bathrooms, large kitchens and spacious lounge areas, so students will have plenty of space to hang out with friends. The on-site facilities include a pool, caf/convenience store, sound lounge, e-library, study zones and shared laundry. With resident assistants on hand to organise events and activities, you will find plenty to do and lots of ways to meet new friends.     Off-campus housing

    Off-campus options include house or unit/apartment rentals. Costs may vary depending on the size, quality and location of the accommodation. In most cases you will be required to sign a six or 12 month contract and pay a months rent in advance. A refundable deposit (bond) is usually also required in the event of any damage incurred during the rental period.

    Students must complete 10 weeks of Academic English to move up half a band score in IELTS. Additional weeks of study may be required if a students score in one IELTS band is lower than their overall score. All students must provide evidence of their English ability before an offer is made. Students who do not have a recent IELTS or equivalent score may request to complete an online PIBT English test which will estimate the number of weeks English study a student will require.
