E D i ASHRAEEnergy Designs – ASHRAE

• New ASHRAE Standards – 90.1-2010 added Submetering requirements

• The expanded submetering is more stringent that in ASHRAE/USGBC Standard 189 1 for green buildingsStandard 189.1 for green buildings

• Goal of the new standard to focus on buildings where metering is cost effective and will result in energy savings

• Standard (8.4.3 – Electrical Energy Monitoring) states, measure the electrical energy use for each of the following separately:

• Total electrical energy• Total electrical energy

• HVAC Systems

• Interior Lighting• Interior Lighting

• Exterior Lighting

• Receptacle circuits

E D i NEC 2014Energy Designs – NEC 2014

• New exceptions utilzing metering are popping up in the NEC Code. For example,

• Article 220.12 – Lighting Load for Specified OccupanciesArticle 220.12 Lighting Load for Specified Occupancies

• Code states lighting load must be sized per Table 220.12, as a minimum.

• Code is based purely on square footage

• But now, there is an Exception for buildings designed and constructed to local energy codes The actualand constructed to local energy codes. The actual lighting load can be used vs. the NEC table, as long as:

• Lighting loads are metered continuously for load information

• Alarming is set to warn building owner/manager

Case Study – Retirement Community

For those existing loads, meters were easily retrofitted into or next to the existing electrical equipment. For outside locations at remote buildings, Siemens provided an enclosed bu d gs, S e e s p o ded a e c osedsolution with secure Wireless Ethernet communications. The Meters tracked the power demand and penergy onboard. No lost data if the network goes down. The Meter has gateway capabilities to allow third party Modbus devices to communicate back to the software. The Meter also has digital inputs for more simple status, alarm or pulse input from other devices.

• They received a utility bill that was over $125,000. higher than any other bill

Case Study – Retirement Community

The Siemens metering data stated [p y y] g gotherwise, as well. Further research and digging by the customer found that the utility had changed their socket meter and incorrectly set it up. With the information from the Siemens metering system they could prove their usage prior and during the periods in question were unchanged. They got their money back.

• Finally, they monitored their demand and noticed that the highest peak they fachieved was not at the typical noon-2pm timeframe, as they thought, but

from 7-8am every weekday morning, no matter what time of the year!? Do you know why?

Case Study – International Airport

As anyone knows, the Atlanta Airport is a large and busy place. It is the World’s largest airport by passenger volume… 101 Million passengers in 2015. The Atlanta Airport was and is expanding and growing very quickly. The demand on the electrical system is growingdemand on the electrical system is growing. The metering used for monitoring the switchgear and electrical system was varied and was not consistent – different manufacturers, different standards over the years during the expansionsthe years during the expansions. Same for the metering that was billing all the tenants of the building – airlines, restaurants, newsstands, lounges, stores, etc. The models and systems to meter the tenants varied and most of it was manually readmeter the tenants varied and most of it was manually read. Siemens worked with the site Facility Engineers, Consultanting Engineers and even the local council to design and build a power monitoring system that would allow the Atlanta Airport to:allow the Atlanta Airport to: Better understand their site load by terminal, area, equipment Better plan equipment expansions and growth by understanding loading Quickly and accurately invoice their tenants improving incoming revenue
