How sub-metering can achieve payback in less than 12 months

Many customers are interested in sub-metering their estate to increase their understanding of the energy usage across their portfolio. Energy ICT have undertaken many such projects for customers including ASDA, Sainsburys, Tesco and Npower.

This article demonstrates the potential benefits of sub-metering and why organisations should include it as part of their energy savings strategy. Here, Jon Peck, Energy ICT Key Account Manager, shares his views on the subject and why organisations should include ensure that sub-metering is part of their energy management plans. He states:

“A standard meter will give you some information to make informed decisions with. For many firms basic metering and billing data is all they can use, due to budget constraints. Many firms and organisations are starting to wake up to the benefits that sub-metering can bring, although there is a major retailer in the UK, with over 3000 stores, where less than 10% have any sub-metering. Their energy manager has said that they can’t get board approval, despite the usual savings of at least 10% being delivered.”

Energy ICT have worked with many large organisations to deliver sub-metering solutions to allow their customers to unlock the value that it will bring. Recently, Energy ICT worked with one major retailer to install around 200 sub-meters in 1 store. The firm will use this as a test case to analyse the costs and benefits as they accept that this may be an extreme amount of meters!!

How sub-metering can achieve payback in less than 12 months

Sub-metering can provide many benefits to an organisation. These include; • Identifying spikes or unusual energy usage patterns• Tracking of the performance of new assets to ensure they are delivering the forecast benefits• Allowing greater comparison of asset performance• Provides quality information for asset renewal• Can ensure that any changes made are continued with, and poor practices aren’t allowed to continue. Recently, Energy ICT analysed the lighting usage for a major retailer, using their new Enacto Software and showed them that by using the sub-metering data in conjunction with an improvement to their maintenance program, there was a potential to save around 8£ million/year.

This was only by analysing around 100 stores (c6% of their portfolio).

How sub-metering can achieve payback in less than 12 months

Below is a typical Lighting alarm: Value = 800kWh, or £64, per day - Quick resolution saves 13 weeks of continued losses, or £5824 in total

Imagine what savings could be possible, if they looked at all their 1800 stores?

Jon concludes:

“Sub-metering is an important step in the development of a customer’s energy management program. I have seen the benefits that sub-metering brings – many of the paybacks being in less than 12 months. Coupled with sub-metering, the data must be viewable from a software package that can show the issues and identify the right areas to target”.
