TEAM OF THE MONTHFROM THE EDITORHow good was Cadel Evansʼ victory in the Tour de France last month?I have no interest whatsoever in cycling and even went to bed 10 minutes into his tour winning time trial oblivious to what was required of him to win the Tour. What does the yel low jersey represent? Why do the riders all start at different times? How can they ride for thousands of kilometres and only be a couple seconds apart? I really donʼt get it. Whatʼs more, I really donʼt want to get it.What I do get, and what I really love about his victory is that it got people excited and talking about something positive for a change.Yeah, I heard the arguments on TV, radio and at the hairdressers about whether he was using performance enhancing drugs. Who cares? They probably all are.Again, I loved that it took peopleʼs focus off all the negative issues going on in this world. Acts of terrorism, the Global Financial Crisis, the never ending Carbon Tax debate carried out by idiotic politicians. It gave Australians something good to talk about around the water cooler on Monday morning. That is what sport is capable of doing. And that is why Australians are so good at sport. We love supporting our sports champions even if we donʼt follow that particular sport. We love to recognise and heap praise on our sporting success stories. This is exactly what the Emu Leonay Sports Buzz aims to do, and that is recognise the achievements of our local athletes and focus on the positive things that occur in this great little community. SPORTS STAR OF THE MONTH

In Eric Neumannʼs gold medal winning event the 4 cyclists rode together for as long as they could and were timed until the third rider crossed the line. This means, that whilst they were able to drop the slowest rider from their team, they had to work hard as a team to ensure that three of them crossed the line together.

Known for being quite a technical event involving a great deal of thinking from c o m p e t i t o r s , t h e t e a m h a s t o communicate well throughout the race to help share the workload. “We have to take turns sharing the lead so that one person isnʼt doing all the hard work in pulling the other members of the team along in their draft”.

So far in his short career, Eric has been able to mix his cycling into different categories of events ranging from the velodrome to the road. However, it is cycling on the road that he enjoys most. “I do enjoy the ʻMaddisonʼ event in the velodrome which is a 20km race where two cyclists take turns competing as a team, but my true passion is on the road in events like the time trial and road races”. “I would have to say that the time trial is my specialist event though”.

Eric started cycling six years ago and really only got into it through his Dad

Frankʼs passion for the sport. “I started cycling because my Dad cycled a bit, but now that Iʼve been cycling for a while and grown a bit I can beat him quite comfortably”.

Eric is a member of the highly successful Penrith Cycling Club and is coached by Cycling NSW coach, Barrie McLean who resides in the lower Blue Mountains. He has had to train 6 days a week in order to reach this level and some weeks can accumulate over 350km on the bike. This is due to a combination of training on the home trainer which is a stationary bike in his lounge room, interval training at a high intensity at his coach, Barrieʼs house, and a bunch club ride with other cyclists from Penrith Cycling Club on the weekend.

Eric Neumann with Paul Wallace, Property Central Director

For Eric, one of the best parts about cycling is the prize money that he gets for winning club and inter-state events, although he does concede that it can be a very expensive sport when you add up all the equipment and travel expenses. “Iʼm very lucky to have my parents supporting me and taking me to training and races”.

While Eric also enjoys playing a bit of basketball, he has his sights firmly set on the Tour de France as a long term goal. “For now I am just focused on d o i n g w e l l a t t h e N a t i o n a l Championships in Shepparton later in the year, but the ultimate for me would be to ride in the Tour de France or the World Time Trial Championships”.

“For now I am just focused on doing wel l a t the National Championships in Shepparton later in the year, but the ultimate for me would be to ride in the Tour de France...”

LOCAL LEGEND

Elizabeth DeMarzi, or Betty, as she is known to most people in our community has dedicated over 35 years to local sport in Emu Plains. Betty has resided in Emu Plains for 40 years with her husband Ray, together raising their 5 children who have all had an extensive involvement in netball, soccer and Little Athletics.

Betty has coached teams at Emu Plains Netball club for 35 consecutive years and has served on the committee for over 30 years, holding a broad range of positions such as Umpires Convenor, Publicity Convenor, Senior Registrar, and more recently President for the last 5 years.

It was only by chance that Betty began coaching netball at Emu Plains, thanks to her friend, Kathy Day, persistently nagging her to get involved and coach her daughterʼs team. “The deal was that she would baby sit my 6 month old daughter if I coached her daughter”. And the rest is history. 35 years later Betty is still going strong with no sign of hanging up her coaching boots.

What makes Bettyʼs involvement so inspiring is that she has actually

“...sport is so important for young people as it provides them with so many opportunities and l i felong friends, and k e e p s t h e m o u t o f trouble too”

coached 2 or 3 teams each year. “I like to take a junior and a senior team”. “I still coach my daughterʼs team and have coached her since she started playing as a junior”. “My other daughters now play in this same team as well”. “But I do love coaching the little ones so I really like to coach a junior team too”.

Bettyʼs involvement in sport isnʼt restricted to netball. She also served on the committee of Emu Plains Little Athletics for 25 years, holding positions

such as Carnivals Organiser and being responsible for doing all of the Zone and Regional entries. “I just love being involved in junior sport”. “I think sport is so important for young people as it p r o v i d e s t h e m w i t h s o m a n y opportunities and lifelong friends. And it keeps them out of trouble too”.

One of Bettyʼs fondest memories from her extensive involvement in junior sport in the area is when she coached the Emu Plains Public School netball team to the State Finals in Lismore in the early 1990ʼs. “The team ended up finishing third in the State which was a really good achievement for the girls”.

Having been around for such a long time, Betty has seen the Netball club grow and develop into one of the largest and most successful clubs in the Penrith District. There are now over 30 teams comprising of 16 junior and 14 senior teams. “I just love our club. We have really good girls playing with us and a great committee”.

KERRʼS CATCH, THE HIGHLIGHT OF CARNIVAL WINMichael Kerr recently performed a classic catch in the Sydney West softball carnival.

He is a Year 12 student at Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School and was a member of the Nepean Zone Boys Softball Team made up of students from Nepean, Penrith, Jamison, Glenmore Park, Blaxland and Winmalee High Schools. They won every game and finally came to the play-off against Hills Sports High School.

Kerr, 17, from Emu Heights, was playing first base and at one stage the ball was hit high up into the air near the foul ball line. He sprinted to the line and despite being blocked by a fence, ran up it in order to be high enough to extend his arm in hope of catching the ball. He didn ʼt just catch it but performed an impressive classic catch. There was an instant crowd reaction of applauding and cheering.

“Michaelʼs performance throughout the tournament was outstanding. His catch displayed both his never-ending determination and athleticism,” said Sara Gardiner, coach of the team.

The Nepean Zone team won the game, along with the competition.

Kerr has been playing softball from a young age and it is, in fact, a sport that his family have a background in. As well as dealing with the demands of being a HSC student, he manages to play softball for both school and out of school teams. Kerr has received a position as a member of the Sydney West softball team.Written By Jessica Earl, Year 8

STUDENT STATE X-COUNTRY RACERSOn 22 July Chris Stork, Gemma Hutchins and Aimee Carlin from Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School competed in the State Cross Country Carnival at Eastern Creek. This is a great achievement as these students raced athletes from areas all over New South Wales and across school systems. A great amount of training and perseverance was needed as the day was very rainy and muddy. Chris Stork had the greatest success placing 4th in the 16ʼs Boys r a c e . T h i s i s a n e x c e p t i o n a l performance which shows amazing athleticism.

SCHOOL ZONELEONAY PUBLIC LEAGUE LEGENDS

The Leonay Public School Opens Rugby League team qualified for the All Schools State Knockout after defeating Emu Plains Public School in the Panther Trophy Final last month (see last monthʼs issue of the Sports Buzz).

The Leonay boys came up against some strong opposition winning 1 of the i r 3 games aga ins t schoo ls representing the Western Suburbs, Canterbury and South Sydney Districts. Size also proved a formidable factor in some of the games with some of the opposition boys weighing as much as grown men.

In all it was a great experience for the boys who actually had to miss a part of their school excursion to Canberra. Thankfully one of the parents was able to take the boys by mini bus down to Canberra to be reunited with the rest of their school mates. No doubt, this will be one of those school experiences these boys will never forget.

TEAM OF THE MONTH - from page 2The Emu Plains U/6s Division 2 team h a v e b e e n c o a c h e d b y G r e g Wallington for the last 2 years. The majority of the boys played last year but were young enough to have a second year in the U/6s. Trainer Andrew Robinson can see a big improvement as a result of the boys having a years experience under their belt. “We have a great bunch of kids and I can honestly say that every one of them has improved since last year and even since the beginning of this year”.

Because there are no semi finals for the U/6 age group, the season culminated at the end of July in a Gala Day for all teams in this age group. “Our boys won 1 out of 3 games on the Gala Day and we only lost a handful of games all year”. “Itʼs great to be involved with them and itʼs really rewarding to see them all improve so much and have a lot of fun along the way”, Andrew says.

WALKING FOR A GREAT CAUSEEmu Plains resident Ayley Ross is planning on walking from Penrith to Newcastle in an attempt to raise $30,000 for the prevention of lost and abandoned dogs being euthanised.

The 21 year old will be embarking on her 290km, 5 day journey on Saturday 10th September, starting from Howell Oval and finishing at Merewether Beach. The aim is to raise enough funds so that the RSPCA can build more animal shelters so that dogs can be cared for long term rather than being euthanised due to lack of housing.

People wishing to sponsor Ayley can go to everydayhero.com.au/ayleyross5.

NETBALLERS REWARDED - from page 1Congratulations to Emu Plains Netball Clubʼs Sophie Dunsire and Tegan Dunn from the 9A Angels for their wonderful achievement at the Anne Sargeant Netball Clinic at Jamison Park, Penrith.

Teah Whiley, pictured on page 1, received the highest honour at the clinic when she was awarded a scholarship to attend the week long Anne Sargeant Clinic at Curl Curl in the January school holidays.

Club President, Betty DeMarzi says, “Teah is an outstanding young player and umpire and really is a great young representative for our club”.

SKATING SUCCESSEmu Heights resident, Emily Imber, has achieved her goal of becoming the Preliminary Penrith Valley Figure Skating Club Champion during the competition held last month. Skating to a ʻMary Popp ins ʼ med ley, she impressed the judges wi th her performance.

When asked how she felt about her success, the modest youngster said, ʻI trained really hard so I just wanted to do my best during the program.ʼ

Never shying away from a challenge, she has already set herself a new goal; to pass the Elementary Grade Test, which will allow her to move up to the next level in her sport. Her next competition will be in Canberra at the end of August where she will compete in both the Artistic and Technical categories. Emily enjoys both events, but says, ʻThereʼs a lot to remember with the Technical program because your skating skills have to be performed with proper technique.ʼ

Her coach, Sharyn Renshaw, is pleased with Emilyʼs progress as they work towards competing at the State Titles in 2012.

GOLDEN GIRLST h r e e E m u P l a i n s g i r l s w e r e successful in winning a gold medal at the NSW Little Athletics State Cross Country at Kurrajong last month. Aimee Carlin, Emma Meyers and Rebecca Castor were successful in taking out the U/12 Girls 2km team event. It is the second year in a row that Emu Plains has won this event and Club President Tracee Romer was so pleased with the result. “It was great to see these 3 lovely girls win this event against the Stateʼs best distance runners”. They all represent the c lub so wel l and i t is an achievement they can all be really proud of”.

T R I AT H L E T E S B O U N D F O R YEPPOONPanthers Tri Club has 4 members taking part in the Yeppoon 70.3 on the 14th August. This is a 1.9km swim, 90km bike ride and 21.1km run. Essentially a half Ironman. Sarah Stoneham, Dave Richardson, Alan Bentley and Barbara Hughes are all very excited to be participating in this event and Panthers Tri Club is very excited to have 4 of it's members representing the club in Queensland.

M7 MARATHONA number of runners from the Emu Leonay community, many of whom are members of Panthers Tri Club participated in the M7 Cities Marathon on Sunday 31st July. The M7 marathon starts in Liverpool and finishes at Blacktown Olympic Park.

For Greg Halin it was his first attempt at a marathon and he completed the run in 3hrs 35mins. Greg now aims to use the experience gained from this event to help him conquer his first Ironman triathlon next year.

It was also Ann Procterʼs first attempt at this gruelling sport. The 3 time World Water Ski champion from Emu Plains completed the race in 3hrs 48mins.

L-R: Emu Plains Little Athletics Club President Tracee Romer, with Aimee Carlin, Emma Meyers & Rebecca Castor

Emu Plains Cricket Club President, Martin Bowerman, competed in his first marathon on the Gold Coast last month at the ripe old age of 45. The ʻsilver foxʼ finished the 42.2 km run in 4 h o u r s a n d 4 0 m i n u t e s . A n achievement he can be extremely proud of.

VICTORY TO U/8s CHAMPIONSThe Emu Plains Rugby League U8/3s capped off an outstanding season to take out their Grand Final 16-6 against Mt Druitt PCYC.Emu had not beaten this team all season and when trailing 6 nil at the end of the first third, it looked like it was going to be a difficult task to pull off a victory. A brilliant individual try to Ella Wallace got the team back on track in the second stanza and the scores were level at the break. In the final term, it was a see-sawing bat t le wi th both teams having opportunities to score.Ella Wallace went over again to put Emu up 10-6 , bu t i t was the scrambling defence of the whole team that kept resisting the opposition attack.O s c a r To w n e s c a m e w i t h i n centimetres of scoring the game clinching try with a smart, scurrying run from Dummy Half, only to have the ball knocked from his finger tips as he was putting it over the line. In the end, Nash Cowles scored a try on the bell to wrap up a very gutsy performance. The most impressive part of the game for the Emus was that it was truly a team effort with all players contributing with solid defence and some brilliant attacking football.Members of this great little footy team i n c l u d e : J a i L a n e , J a k o b Richardson, Ella Wallace, Kate Wallace, Jacob Worth, Seth Wilson, Lachlan Bartak, James Sanderson, Nash Cowles, Oscar Townes and Sarah Hardge-Scott.

On 3 July, some of the talented students f rom You Can Dance Performing Arts School set sail on P&O's Pacific Jewel for 10 days of glorious South Pacific Sunshine. It was an amazing opportunity to perform on board in 'The Marquee Showroom'. Their variety performance showcased the talented dancers, singers and American cheer leaders, wowing capacity crowds throughout the cruise.

This was an amazing opportunity for our students and they all did 'You Can Dance' and the Emu Plains community very proud. It was the first time any of them had performed on a 'moving'

stage and a few members of our cast got a bout of sea sickness. They all worked incredibly hard during the rehearsal process leading up to the cruise and did such a brilliant job dancing, singing and cheer leading.

This was also an excellent opportunity to see professional performers in action every night while we were away- we all got an enormous dose of fantastic live entertainment which was truly inspiring. It was an extraordinary experience for all the students who performed and their families".

SUCCESS AT EMU PLAINS FC‐from Page 1 The U/15 team, coached by Emu Plains resident Vic Divani, have just returned from the Kanga Cup, a National tournament in Canberra, playing 10 games in 6 days. The boys reached the Grand Final but went down to a representative team on the day.

They also made the State Cup Final only to lose 2-1 in extra time.

As a result of their success and dominance in their local competition this year, the team will now go on to represent Nepean Distr ict at the Champions of Champions starting on September 11. This will pit them against the best club teams in the State.

Other teams to represent their club so proud this season have been the U/12 Girls. They too made the State Cup final but came up against a team who were just too strong on the day.

The U/11 Div 1 team (Sports Buzz Team of the Month for July), had a very successful Kanga Cup tournament reaching the semi finals playing up an age in the U/12 s. They lost 1-0 in a very tight encounter to the eventual winners of the tournament.

Golf ReportBY CAMERON FAICO

The Leonay golf club is targeting junior members in the new financial year. Juniors can join for just $125 dollars and receive full playing privileges and an official golflink handicap.

Traditionally a strong club in the school aged programs, head professional Wayne Worthy and his dedicated staff are pushing hard to re-establish the junior culture at the foot of the mountains.

Free tuition is being offered to all new and existing junior members under the watchful eyes of assistant professional Col Banham and third year trainee Ben Brackenridge.

“As we come into the warmer months, golf is a great alternative sport as rugby league, soccer and netball finish up in the coming weeks” said Wayne, a keen advocate of growing the junior membership base.

“The benefits of playing at the club and mixing with other members can build confidence and is a great way to encourage etiquette and foster club spirit.”

Assistant professional Col Banham is just as enthusiastic. “Growing the junior program has been a passion of mine ever since I started at Leonay and the next twelve months are an important period as we look to once again field competitive sides in the Junior Pennant series and Eric Apperly Shield” he said.

“There is so much potential with kids who already play existing sports. Hand-eye co-ordination is one thing I see as something that is enhanced in our sport and can have benefits for other sports as younger players grow and change.”

Trainee Ben is very passionate about the junior system, himself rising through the ranks to now establish himself as one of the premier trainee professionals in the state.

“I loved my time as a junior at Leonay. President Kevin Smal l and his dedicated directors always made my junior days memorable. Whether it was playing away tournaments or just playing in the weekly Saturday competition, I was always made to feel part of the club from the outset.”

“I love to get out on the course at least once a week if not more and help out the next breed of young talent whenever my boss gives me the chance.”

So as the full-time whistle blows around the local parks and ovals at the conclusion of winter, the Leonay staff is urging juniors and their parents to pop into the pro-shop and learn more about the exciting opportunities that exist this summer.
