Aussie Jack Launches Bicentenary Crossing

Next year marks the bicentenary of the crossing of the Blue Mountains in 1813 and Penrith is gearing up to celebrate this historic milestone with veteran Australian actor, Jack Thompson.

From the EditorWinter is here, and I awoke to the first

frost of the season the other morning. Nothing like a good frost to let you know you’re alive! Time to pull out all the winter woolies, and to settle down on the lounge with a warm cup of tea and your latest edition of your community newspaper. We have some great brain-teasers and puzzles on page 10 to warm up the brain cells.

It’s also a great time to have the oven going to warm up the kitchen. If you’re after some inspiration, I’ve included my secret slice recipe on page 8, for your eating pleasure.

“What’s Cooking?” will be a regular segment and I’d greatly appreciate any contributions of special recipes (cooking isn’t one of my strong points, so I need all the help I can get!)

And can you believe it, there’s only a few more weeks until the next school holidays. How did this term go so fast? Kids, start planning your holidays, and get ready to send me more photos, picture or poems. Our readers loved your last contributions!

Enjoy reading your local community news and have a great start to the winter.

Our Lady Leads the Way with Science

Our Lady Of The Way Primary School is innovative in their approach to science, always looking for new and exciting ways to introduce scientific concepts to the students.

CSIRO Science Education Centre visited the school in May for a fantastic day of fun science. The CSIRO team presented two interactive hands-on science programs. Year 6 were captivated by a “Forensic Frenzy”, while the year 5 students engaged in a fascinating unit called “The Human Body”. Judging by the childrens’ responses, the program was a great success.

Here’s what some of the year 5 students had to say about their awesome science day.

“CSIRO is the best because I never knew that I had a blind spot!” said Paris.

Logan said, “CSIRO was a gigantic step forward in our research for our human body unit!”

“We learnt about all our different blood cells and what blood looks like close up!” said Annie.

Max thought, “CSIRO is great because it can teach you so many things.”

“We learnt how a tablet dissolves in your tummy!” Emily B said.

The CSIRO program engages students in eye-opening interactive science theatre

and hands-on experiments, which have been developed around real-life CSIRO research. Our Lady of the Way students were given a great opportunity to ‘be’ the scientists, rather than just reading about them.

CSIRO, more than being the largest employer of scientists in Australia, is one of the most respected science organisations

in the world. The CSIRO Science Education Centre is able to draw on the benefits of this, and provide quality science programs for students, teachers and public audiences throughout NSW.

The CSIRO presenters have experience in teaching and performing. Their amusing and lively approach to science is both engaging and educational.

Nightmare on Hare/Mann/Wascoe Street!

Glenbrook’s awkward Hare/Mann/Wascoe Street intersection is set to change following a review of traffic flows into the eastern side of Glenbrook after a right-turn restriction was imposed at the intersection of Ross Street and the Great Western Highway last year, Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres said today.

“The Hare/Mann/Wascoe Street intersection is one of the most awkwardly designed traffic configurations in the Penrith electorate. As the second entry-way into the Glenbrook village we owe it to the small businesses and the people who live here to make this configuration as traffic-friendly as possible.” Mr Ayres said.

“With the right-turn restrictions at Ross Street currently operating as an effective safety measure it is important that we now look to improving the accessibility of the Glenbrook Village.”

“Roads and Maritime Services have outlined two possible treatments for the intersection which would improve traffic flow at this intersection by removing the short-stack of vehicles between Mann Street, Wascoe Street and the Great Western Highway. They include:

Option 1: The removal of north-south and east-west movements through the intersection. This would be achieved by installing a physical separation linking Wascoe Street east with Mann Street north and Wascoe Street west with Mann Street south.

Option 2: Removing all connectivity with Mann Street by closing Mann Street at Wascoe Street and providing a cul-de-sac in Mann Street.

“This is an important outcome for the Glenbrook village and ensures that access to the first village centre in the Blue Mountains is as easy as possible both for the local residents and the visitors who provide an important support to the lower mountains economy.”

From pg 1... “It is such a significant event in Australia’s history. It opened up new horizons for us in every respect. I’m particularly interested in the wonderful Australian writing that is now one of the other great legacies of the First Crossing and I encourage all Australians to get to know this remarkable part of our story,” said Jack Thompson of “The Man From Snowy River” fame.

In 1789 the discovery of the Nepean River represented a significant milestone for the fledgling colony of NSW. It was the lifeblood for grain, vegetable crops and livestock. However, the colony quickly grew, as did the urgent need to find

Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth Forge a Path

improved grazing lands. The formidable barrier of the Blue

Mountains needed to be crossed for the continued survival of the colony.

Prior to 1813, many unsuccessful attempts were made to cross the Blue Mountains. However, on 11 May 1813, explorers Gregory Blaxland, Lieutenant William Lawson and William Charles Wentworth, accompanied by four servants, left Blaxland’s farm at South Creek near St Marys and arrived at Mount Blaxland in the Kanimbla Valley on 31 May.

Penrith City Mayor, Greg Davies, says Council is committed to honouring the people, places and events that have helped shaped our country.

“ To commemorate this historic event, a number of community activities are being planned for May 2013.”

Saturday 11 May 2013 will see the launch of the re-enactment trek at a breakfast function at South Creek Farm, the site of Blaxland’s farm on Luddenham Road, St Marys. The launch will commemorate that moment in time when the three explorers, their four servants with livestock and provisions departed on their epic journey exactly 200 years prior. The event will also serve to reflect on the journey’s significance to the nation.

Bruce Turner at his recent retirement party

Retiring after 40 years in the Public SectorOn 24th February the Commissioner of Taxation, Michael

D’Ascenzo visited the Penrith Tax Office to join with staff and notable guests to bid farewell to Bruce Turner, Chief Internal Auditor of the Tax Office and the senior executive leader of the Penrith office. The Commissioner paid tribute to Bruce’s outstanding contribution to the ATO.

Bruce is a proud Emu Plains local who commenced his long and distinguished career serving the community in the mailroom of the Rural Bank Penrith. Through Bruce’s strong work ethic, personal drive and integrity he has spent the vast majority of his career in senior roles in the State Bank of NSW, Reserve Bank of Australia, State Rail and Integral Energy and eventually returning to Penrith to take up the role of Chief Internal Auditor for the ATO in 2007.

Throughout his career Bruce has attained global, national, and local recognition for his contributions to promoting good governance.

Whilst Bruce is highly recognised and remembered within the ATO for his contributions to the organisation over the past 5 years it is important to acknowledge that Bruce is especially passionate about contributing to the broader community.

Bruce chairs the Audit & Risk Committees for the NSW Department of Premier & Cabinet, and the Nepean Blue Mountains and Western Sydney Local Health Districts, and he sits as an independent member on the NSW Transport Construction Authority, NSW Country Rail Infrastructure Authority and Wyong Shire Council audit/risk/governance committees.

Bruce was recently appointed to the international committee for the auditing profession, the Institute of Internal Auditors, where he will represent Australia’s public sector interests.

Throughout his career Bruce has also found time to author technical publications, including chapters for two better practice books in 2009-2010 published in Asia and the UK, Chair of the Public Sector Audit Network Group in the ACT (a group of

around 50 public sector chief audit executives based in Canberra) and is a White Ribbon Ambassador, denouncing violence against women.

As an avid Penrith Panthers supporter, it was only fitting that ‘Paws’ the Panthers mascot attended Bruce’s farewell. Bruce was presented with a signed, framed Panthers jersey as a farewell gift from the ATO staff.

Bruce and his wife Bea are enjoying the opportunity to travel, and recently returned from a cruise around the Hawaiian Islands. They are also making the most of their opportunity to spend more time with their family, Nicole, Robert, Jacqueline, Glen and Sally, and their three grandchildren Elina, Elijah and Lucy.

Bruce is a true ambassador for the Penrith community. His passion and commitment for his community will be remembered for a long time. We wish Bruce well in his retirement and this extra time will enable Bruce to continue with his Community endeavours.

Funding for Arms of Australia Inn MuseumThe Arms of Australia Inn Museum will benefit from extensions to the roofing over paved areas after the Nepean District Historical Society put in a successful application to the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership Program, Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres said today.

Mr Ayres met with Rosemary Weaver and members of the society to announce the $12,989 grant toward the museum.

“The Nepean District Historical Society do a fantastic job with the operation of the Arms of Australia Inn Museum and getting the message out about our region and the significant role Penrith has played in the development of our state,” Mr Ayres said.

“I will continue to work with members of the Nepean District Historical Society and other local organisations to find ways to build their capacity to support our community.”

Modern Classic at the JoanPenrith based theatre company Emu

Heights Productions is proud to present “The Shoe-Horn Sonata” again at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, after its successful inaugural 2011 season.

‘The Shoe-Horn Sonata’ is a powerful award-winning play by John Misto based on true events of two women who survived a Japanese POW camp in the jungles of Sumatra. Reunited after fifty years for a TV documentary, the women relive the horrors, fragile triumphs, humour and courage required to survive. They also uncover a devastating secret that separated them for half a century.

“Plays were meant to be seen, not read.” says Ian Zammit, co-founder of Emu Heights Productions. This is the vision driving Emu Heights Productions to bring professional quality theatre to Western Sydney for the benefit of HSC English students, and the company is delighted with the overwhelmingly positive feedback from teachers and students for last year’s production.

Western Sydney region to professional & entertaining theatrical productions in their own backyard.

Emu Heights Productions will be hosting a forum for English and Drama educators this August in Penrith. It will provide an opportunity to discuss understanding of playtexts through performance for the Western Sydney region. This is a great opportunity for educators from Sydney and regional schools to connect with our community and engage in this valuable discussion.

Cody and Chloe put Penrith on the Map

Cody and Chloe Luczak of Emu Plains showcased their favourite Penrith places and scored a $400 cash prize for their efforts in the Penrith is Here photo competition.

Just some of the territory covered by the pair included Penrith skate park, the Nepean River, Penrith Whitewater, High Street (Penrith) and Penrith Civic Centre. The winning image was taken in front of Penrith’s iconic Museum of Fire.

Proud dad Adam Luczak said the package of 16 photos of his children’s day out showed “the kids enjoying everything that Penrith has to offer”. The prize money is something the siblings can look forward to in the future, with $200 going into each of their bank accounts.

Penrith Mayor Greg Davies said that all you need is a camera to start your own Penrith is Here adventure.

“Congratulations to Cody and Chloe, who have well and truly made their mark capturing Penrith’s diverse attractions. You too can help spread the message that Penrith is Here and discover how you can win incredible prizes by visiting penrithishere.com.au.

“Have a look at the Penrith is Here facebook page to gain inspiration and see

Fitness Builds AchievementChildren at Emu Heights Public School take their fitness

seriously! The school believes fitness and healthy living have a positive

impact on academic achievement and ensure the 3Rs are balanced with a strong program of physical activity.

The school compliments its weekly fitness and sport programs with special events including Penrith Cup Gala Days organised by teachers at the school to provide inter-school competitive sport opportunities across a range of different sports.

Children are also encouraged to set personal fitness goals and map their physical activity as part of the Premier’s Sporting Challenge.

One indicator the children are growing in fitness was the school’s recent first place at the District Cross Country Carnival.

Emu Heights is a great place for children to learn and grow!

Fit Facts!• Thehumanbodyhasover600muscles,40%ofthebody’s weight.• Thelongest muscle in the human body is the sartorius. This narrow muscle of the thigh passes obliquely across the front of the thigh and helps rotate the leg to the position assumed in sitting cross-legged. Its name is a derivation of the adjective “sartorial,” a reference to what was the traditional cross-legged position of tailors (or “sartors”) at work.• Thelargest muscle is the gluteus maximus (buttock muscle), which moves the thighbone away from the body and straightens out the hip joint. It is also one of the stronger muscles in the body.• Thesmallest muscle is the stapedius in the middle ear. It is thinner thana thread and 0.127 cm in length. It activates the stirrup that sends vibrations from the eardrum to the inner ear.

GO TEAM SKATEL!The 2012 Skate Australia Artistic

Roller Skating National Championships to be hosted by SkateNSW, will be held at the Whitlam Leisure Centre, Memorial Avenue, Liverpool NSW, from 1st – 7th July.

Team Skatel Artistic Roller Skating Open Precision Team is thrilled to represent New South Wales at the Championships.

The team consists of 12 members aged from 10 years old and up, ranging in ability. The skaters train together once a week at the Emu Plains Roller Skating rink, but many of the skaters train at least 4 times a week individually. It is believed that our team will be the youngest team competing in the precision event and for many of the skaters this will be the first time that they will compete at this elite level.

To be able to compete as a representative of NSW is a great opportunity for all our skaters.

However, to get our team to Nationals we need to raise approximately $600 per skater. This includes team costumes, training leotards, NSW representative track suits, nomination fees and coaching fees.

To help the team, Penrith Skatel are holding a Skate-a-thon on Sunday, 24th June, 2012 at the roller skating rink to help raise some money. So why not grab your friends and head on down to the skate-a-thon for some fun and fitness. You could even be a lucky winner. The team will be running a raffle and a silent auction on the day.

For more information about the National Championships, check out www.skatensw.org.au. Go Team Skatel!!
