From the Editor

Welcome to our Olympic edition of the ELG. I’m assuming that a fair percentage of our readers will be partaking in a bit of armchair exercise during the Olympics, and if watching all those magnificent athletes in action isn’t inspiration enough, we have a host of health, fitness and wellbeing articles to really get you motivated!

Keep all your fingers and toes crossed for our very own Olympians, Jessica Fox from Leonay and Penrithites Jade Close and Robin Jeffery. We may as well claim our neighbours from Springwood too – cyclist Amanda Spratt and Canoeist Sebastian Marczak. Go team!

The chef at Hopewood Retreat has provided a healthy (and patriotic) green & gold recipe this month for you to enjoy. Its quick and easy, leaving you more time for exercise.

Enough of the physical stuff, though. Check out page 3 for a mental challenge ‘Olympic Numbers’ – just something to keep you on the ball. Give it a go – you have nothing to lose, and it could just be a life-changing experience for you.

Enjoy reading your local community news and stay warm as you snuggle up in front of the TV for some marathon Olympic viewing!

Vicki

McCarthy Students Strike GoldFrom pg 1... Defence Force representative, Petty Officer Brian Town

said the scholarships were a government initiative, introduced in 2009 as an incentive for students to keep maths and technical subjects in their curriculum.

Year 12 student Benjamin Martin said the scholarship will set him up to pursue a future in the defence force as a rifleman or combat engineer. Gareth Roche, year 11, agrees that the scholarship ensures a brighter future and better job prospects. He was lucky enough to be chosen as one of only 40 Year 11 students Australia-wide to participate in a week long ‘Defence Experience Tour’. The 40 students spent a week of the July holidays at the Defence Trade Training Centres in Wagga Wagga, Albury Wodonga and in Melbourne on the HMAS Cerberus.

Research suggests that only a third of one’s ability to achieve success in life is attributed to IQ. The difference is the effort you put into whatever it is you’re working towards – that’s the grit. And it appears that McCarthy students have an abundant supply. Along with the Defence Force scholarships, sixteen year 9 students and another sixteen students from Year 10 were recognised for their selection in the University of Western Sydney’s Fast Forward Program. Ms Stephanie Palermo of UWS said the program selects students with academic and leadership potential, with the aim of engaging the students in learning opportunities from year 9 through to year 12, transitioning to tertiary education. UWS has been running the Fast Forward program with other western Sydney schools for several years and has just this year introduced McCarthy Catholic College to the partnership.

On the day of the awards where many students through years 7 to 12 were recognised for their academic achievements, the Principal handed out equal measures of praise, encouragement and sage advice. “Make the most of the day. Make the most of school… Having a passion for your favourite subject or your sport will help you… Take on challenges… If you don’t understand what you’re doing, work and work and work until you do.”

And if the audience were not inspired enough by all the awards, Ms Meadows summed up proceedings with a few famous quotes – an apt addition to our Olympic edition…

“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” – Thomas A. Edison

“It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer.” – Albert Einstein

“Have patience with all things, but chiefly have patience with yourself. Do not lose courage in considering your own imperfections but instantly set about remedying them - every day begin the task anew.” – Saint Francis de Sales* Read all about McCarthy Catholic College’s Trade Training Centre in the next edition.

OLYMPIC EDITION

Child Restraint Laws – It’s Easy with BEESAFEThe NSW Government recently updated Child Restraint Laws

that require ALL children under seven years of age to be secured in a suitable child restraint or booster seat when travelling in a vehicle. Drivers will need to ensure that children younger than four years of age do not travel in the front seat of a vehicle where that vehicle also has rear seats. Also, children under seven years of age cannot travel in the front seat of a vehicle where that vehicle also has rear seats, unless all the rear seats are occupied by children younger than seven years.

New standards introduced this year provide for shoulder height indicators on all new child car restraints being manufactured in Australia. These indicators are a guide for parents when choosing the correct child restraint for their child & have been introduced to assist parents where there has been confusion in the past regarding children’s height & weight. Correct selection of your child’s car restraint is critical, using an incorrect restraint based on your child’s circumstance can lead to serious consequences. While the newly shoulder height indicators are there to assist you, it is important that you understand the weight limitations of all restraints and for that you should seek the advice of experts.

An unrestrained child sitting in the rear seat of a vehicle can hit the driver with force equivalent to the weight of a baby elephant. Surveys carried out by Kidsafe have found that some 69% of all child restraints inspected were found to be incorrectly fitted and some 25% would have put the child at risk of death or serious injury in an accident. Most importantly, properly fitted child restraints can reduce the risk of death or serious injury in road crashes by up to 70%. It is therefore vitally important to have all child restraints fitted, if not inspected, by a trained professional.

Beesafe Travel is an RTA Authorised Child Restraint & Seat Belt installation service, who have over 15 years experience in the professional fitting of child restraints. As your local authorised professionals, they operate a mobile service which comes right to your door.

For maximum piece of mind, call Angela at Beesafe Travel now on 0404 132 208 for more information or to book a mobile installation.

President’s Cup FootballSocceroo scouts should have been

about at Jamison Park recently. The U9 competition in the President’s Cup was sizzling hot. BMFC U9 Panthers played the match of their lives, only to be defeated with 1 minute to go in extra time by an impressive Henry Lawson team. The parents were nervous wrecks by the full-time whistle.

Still, it was a better way to go down than last year. Panthers lost after 0-0 at extra time, in a penalty shoot-out.

St Finbar’s Prepares for Olympic ActionIt’s athletics carnival time, and what better inspiration to run your heart out than to

have all our Olympic heroes leading the way in London. St Finbar’s proved to have its fair share of budding track and field stars, with some blistering times on the track.

Perfect sunshine and moderate temperatures allowed the athletes to do their best, with many kids managing PBs. The big winners on the day were Tamaroo (Blue House). They broke a long losing streak to collect the House Cup after a stunning victory in the mixed relay and the help of bonus points for good sportsmanship. Great work!

Green Diet Wins Gold Medal When we think about vegetarians, athletes and Olympians probably

aren’t the first people that come to mind – but perhaps they should be. In fact, eating a vegetarian diet can easily provide your body with the protein and nutrients it needs to be a power house. Just ask distance runner David McNeill, a vegetarian who will be making his Olympic debut in London this year.

Unlike many of us who often let our eating habits slip over the colder months, McNeill and other London 2012 medallist hopefuls have to keep up their good eating habits all year round, and it’s a lesson we can learn from!

With Olympic fever just about to envelop the nation, there’s no better incentive to be healthy and active than watching our home-grown prospective champions going for gold.

According to Hopewood Health Retreat’s Head Chef, John Estival, although we realise the importance of healthy eating or benefits of vegetarianism, many of us simply don’t have the knowledge to prepare meals that are both wholesome and exceptionally delicious.

“Very few of us think we have the time to create meals that are really good for us, or we believe that healthy meals mean bland and boring flavours. The reality though is that healthy eating can be fast and uncomplicated, and is delicious as well as having added nutritional value.”

Hopewood Health Retreat has recently introduced healthy cooking classes, presented by the Head Chef, who strongly believes that once equipped with the right knowledge, preparing a healthy vegetarian dish is a breeze.

“It’s like I tell people in my classes, vegetarian cooking doesn’t limit your options – instead it opens up a whole world of tasty and healthy dishes,” says Estival.

Shed those Winter Bulges with Michelle BeechNow we’ve been experiencing some warmer days, some of us

are anticipating Spring, the end of the Winter blues, flowers in bloom, fresh air, sunshine and lighter clothing.

Naturally, when the weather is cold, it is easier to give in to the temptation of rich, filling foods to warm us and bring comfort. Unfortunately, this also means that many of us carry a bit more weight than we would normally like to and in Winter it is more difficult to find time to move our bodies and keep active and trim.

Many of us wake in the morning with good intentions - picturing ourselves looking shiny, new, healthy and thinner. We think, today is the day I will make the change. However, no matter how good our intentions we often give in to our weaknesses. I hear it over and over again, people tell me how hard they’ve tried but they feel like they are failures.

There are many reasons for weight gain, and sub-optimal health, and it is not always due entirely to what we consume. There are many factors which include:– Hormonal, especially for women who are peri or post-menopausal or suffering PMS issues– Wrong food choices – especially when you believe these foods are healthy. There is a lot of misinformation from food manufacturers who are out there to push their products.– Foods that are not compatible with your metabolism or blood type that may cause inflammation or mild allergy which can upset our digestive processes resulting in poor absorption, assimilation and elimination.– Foods that increase hunger and appetite, rather than satiate it.– Sometimes nutritional deficiencies keep our bodies craving for the wrong things.– Not enough exercise and movement and especially lack of motivation. And the list goes on. So what to do?

The good news is there is much than can be done with often minor, sustainable and achievable lifestyle changes. Knowledge is power. Being a Naturopath/Nutritionist, I am able to work with my patients providing that knowledge and self-empowerment.

Obviously, there are no magic pills, so to speak, but there are many herbs and nutrients, and homeopathy that make the journey achievable, along with lifestyle coaching and goal-setting.

I have recently established my new clinic at 48 Lucasville Road, Glenbrook (just up the road from Glenbrook village.) View my website at www.michellebeech.com.au or the Natural Therapies pages: www.naturaltherapypages.com.au/natural_medicine/nsw/glenbrook/Naturopath

CONTOURS has a Challenge for YOU

Don’t just watch the Olympics. Get into Contours Emu Plains and be part of the action. Natalie and her expert team are ready, willing and able to inspire you to health and fitness with an awesome August program.

Come into the studio on Old Bathurst Road for the Olympic Scratchie promotion. It’s your big chance to win a gold, silver or bronze medal. Even better, you could win a mini-membership, to try the gym for free.

Then you can take the Contours 6 Week Challenge. It’s open to members and non-members and includes outdoor bootcamp, BioAge, nutrition plans and personal training. The action starts on August 13th. Late entries also welcome.

And here’s something for the members. Are you game to take the Olympic 45 second Challenge? What can you do in 45 seconds? Usain Bolt could run 400m. Australian swimming sensation Eamon Sullivan would be a touch off 100m freestyle. And apparently there’s a 91-year fellow in the USA who can do 61 chin-ups in 45 seconds! (That I’d like to see!) Categories for you to test your stamina at Contours include cycling, rowing, running, squats and pushups.

Get your body ready for summer - start early, get fit and strong, find your energy!

Call the studio on 4735 4464 for more information.

McCarthy Teacher Hip Hops to Ireland

Recently, McCarthy Catholic College teacher Keith Heggart spent three weeks in Europe at a number of conferences. Firstly, Keith was invited by the Cultural Studies Association to Paris for the Crossroads in Cultural Studies Conference. He was asked to present a paper about the ‘Hip Hop for Global Justice’ program that ran at McCarthy last year.

This program, which was the work of Keith and Fulbright Scholar, Akesha Horton, encouraged young people to engage with issues of social justice through Hip Hop Culture. Students worked with artists like L-Fresh to write songs about important issues like bullying and crime. These songs were then recorded at the AKC in Mount Druitt. Keith presented his findings, as well as playing some of the songs at the conference, which took place at the world famous Sorbonne University, and also at the headquarters of UNESCO. Keith said, ‘Sometimes, teaching programs like this can make you feel isolated – it was wonderful to hear about so many other educators who are committed to social justice.’

Keith was also invited to the Apple Distinguished Educators’ Global Institute in Cork, Ireland. This institute drew together

Keith said, ‘This was a very powerful experience. It was a real honour to meet so many incredible – and incredibly talented teachers.’ In addition to workshops, the teachers also had a chance to work with professional film makers and photographers, and also learn from The Open University about how to create online content. All in all, an invaluable experience for Mr Heggart.
