Fabulous Freaky Faces with Cartoon Dave

Cartoon Dave (AKA Dave Hackett) is the kind of guy who likes to draw nine-headed chickens and people being attacked by toilets. He has brought his No-Rules brand of cartooning to TV screens each week on Disney Channel, with his popular cartooning segment airing in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and China.

His many other TV appearances include his current regular spot on Network Ten’s Toasted TV, Saturday Disney, ABC’s Creature Features, Totally Wild, not to mention a totally shark-infested TEXTA TV commercial.

2012 marks Dave’s 18th year of teaching cartooning, and the Penrith Regional Gallery & the Lewers Bequest on River Road was lucky enough to snap him up for some holiday entertainment. Our local kids (those whose parents were clever enough to book early) were able

The local children were delighted when Dave told them the first rule of cartooning – there are no rules!Finlay of Glenbrook said, “I loved all the crazy people he drew! They were awesome. The best part was when he told us to have a go at it ourselves and told us to draw kooky stuff.” The children went on

From the Editor

Welcome to the first edition of the new look Emu & Leonay Gazette.

We’re ready to start the New Year afresh (although it feels as if it’s half over already - where did January go??) Not only do we have changes in the name (formerly known as the Echo) and layout, we have a new editor – that’s me!

I look forward to an exciting year of keeping you up to date with the latest events and happenings in the district.

Remember, this is your community newspaper, so if you have any interesting local stories you’d like to share with the readers, I’d love to hear about it. Feel free to contact me via phone or email – details are on the top left of this page.

By the time this issue makes it into your letter boxes, school will have resumed for the year, so we’ll be well and truly out of holiday mode and back into the school/work routine. If you’ve made New Year’s resolutions, I trust you’re on your way to fullfulling them. It’s a subject worthy of some follow up - since I failed miserably in my resolution to give up chocolate this year! A foolish endeavour!

The next edition will feature a ‘Resolutions Forum’. It will be a couple of months into the not-so-new year, so you’ll have a pretty good idea whether you’re succeeding, or whether, from past futile attempts, you didn’t even bother to make any resolutions this year. Snez and the BeanstalkLeonay actress Snez Pajovic has been

delighting the crowds this summer with her hilarious interpretation of Jack of beanstalk fame. Snez has been performing with the Acting Factory for six years and this year scored the coveted role in the company’s production of Jack and the Beanstalk.

Each year for the past nine years, the Penrith-based independent theatre company has adapted a well-known fairy tail and brought it to life for the benefit of families in the Penrith and Blue Mountains region. This year’s wonderful adaptation of Jack and the Beanstalk was written by Linda Stainton.

For the first time, the beautiful grounds of Mamre House at Orchard Hills provided the stage for The Acting Factory’s performance. It was the perfect place to spread a blanket, bring a picnic, sit back and enjoy the show, and marvel at Jack’s tree climbing performance. Even the wet weather didn’t dampen the spirits of the actors or the enthusiastic crowds.

Asked what she loved about playing Jack, Snez replied, “I love playing Jack because I get to play air guitar and it’s awesome. I’m also perfecting the art of burping the alphabet in my spare time, something I never would’ve even

attempted had I not played Jack. I’ve stopped brushing my hair and bathing and I find myself watching a lot more sport on TV. I can only attribute that to one thing, playing Jack.”

And one thing about live theatre is that you can’t ‘bloop’ out the bloopers. So you just roll with it, like when Jack pulled the cow’s tail off (that’s not supposed to happen!)

If you missed Snez’s performance as Jack this time, the Acting Factory will be performing Jack and the Beanstalk in the April School Holidays at the Norman Lyndsay Gallery in Faulconbridge.

Snez’s involvement with the Acting Factory came about after an acting course at the Q Theatre back in 2005. Prior to that she had studied at the Actor’s Centre in Surrey Hills. In 2006, Snez performed in the Acting Factory’s production of Drought Breaker at the Riverside Theatre and the Q Theatre.

Another feather in her bow was her performance in Short and Sweet at the Newtown Theatre. To top that off, she co-wrote and performed in a piece called Café India.

So what’s next for our local Leonay star? Snez says she’s awaiting calls from

Hollywood, but in the meantime she’s doing a Theatre Studies major as part of her teaching degree at UNE and rehearsing for Mamapalooza, a variety night celebrating motherhood, which will be on at the Tap Gallery in Darlinghust in May.

America… Greece… Ireland… Italy… if you’re dreaming of these places at 3am and its not about planning your next world tour, chances are you could be thinking, “I’m going to lose my super.”

If you are having these thoughts, you are possibly in the wrong asset allocation. All super funds enable you to select the ratio of investments (growth investments) to the level of fixed interest or cash (think “Term Deposits” or investments that don’t fluctuate). For example if you select 100% Australian Equity/Shares, your whole super amount is invested in the Australian share market. If you selected “Balanced” you would find approximately 60% is invested in shares and approximately 40% or thereabouts invested in fixed interest or cash.

Neither selection is good nor bad, it totally depends on what level of volatility you are willing to endure (some would say suffer). For the last few years if you have been invested in the high growth end, your money has had a wild ride.

If you have been invested in the other end your fluctuations have been much less. However prior to 2009 and at some point in the future (nobody knows when) the growth end will experience greater returns and the fixed interest and cash returns will look poor.

Once again it depends on where you’re at with your money. If you are 40 with an income, a wild ride every now and then may not worry you. The optimist in you will say, “The market will bounce back.”

If, on the other hand, you’re thinking about retiring or using your super money soon, you may be having sleepless nights thinking, “I don’t want to lose a cent” and wish you had selected a less growth exposed portfolio.

The most important thing is to engage with your super, know what asset class your money is invested in and select the volatility that you’re willing to take, not one that is selected for you. Better still, see a local, fee based, non-institutionally licensed financial adviser… you’ll be sure to sleep better.

TOP ACHIEVERSJessica Tops the State

The future is looking bright for our local school leavers. The Emu Plains and Leonay community are fortunate to be home to some our our brightest stars.

Not only did Jessica Fox of Leonay inherit both parents’ brilliant paddling genes, she also inherited their intelligence. The Blaxland High student topped the state in PDHPE (Personal development, health, physical education) with an HSC score of 99 – a remarkable achievement considering the amount of time Jessica needs to spend in persuing her Olympic dreams.

17-year-old Jessica said that she has learnt to cope with stress when competing in her slalom canoeing events, so this stress management has helped her cope with the pressure of exams.

The next few months will be hectic for Jessica as she trains to compete for a spot on the Olympic canoe team.

St Paul’s Grammar StarsSt Paul’s Grammar students have the

choice of studying for the HSC or the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma.

The IB Diploma is a highly regarded international senior secondary program of study. It is an increasingly popular alternative to the HSC with a dozen Sydney Schools now offering the Diploma Programme and more joining.

School captain, Paul Mitchell from Orchard Hills scored an IB 42 (which equates to an ATAR of 99.20) and twins Feili and Feiya Zhang from Glenmore Park both gained an IB 41(ATAR 98.70).

In the HSC program, Michael Amoroso from Emu Plains achieved a score of 92.7 and Emu Heights resident Jessica Crompton achieved 90.

The successful combination of HSC and IB results affirm the academic strength of St Paul’s Grammar School.

What’s Preventing the New You?by Michelle Beech

Now that we are well into the New Year, after having made our new year resolutions, we may be finding it all too hard to stick to them.

We wake in the morning with good intentions - picturing ourselves looking shiny, new, healthy and thinner. We think, today is the day that I will make the change. However, no matter how good our intentions we often give in to our weaknesses. I hear it over and over again, people tell me how hard they’ve tried but they feel like they are failures.

Are You Taking Your Vitamins? by John Miller-Crispe

In times past taking supplements was ridiculed and many “authorities” loved to go into print to condemn this practice. However there have been many studies that have since proved the value and efficacy of supplementation in improving health that all but the most died in the wool old school stick to this claim.

One particular supplement that has received lots of positive press over recent months is Vitamin D, more particularly D3. Why is this vitamin so important?

Vitamin D3Vitamin D3 is mainly produced in our

bodies from skin exposure to sunlight. It is a wonderful, free way for your body to try to ensure that it has adequate amounts of this vital substance.

You would think that in a country like Australia with huge amounts of sunshine, none but the most avid avoider of daylight would be deficient in D3. The reality is that even in Cairns 40% of the population are deficient in this vital nutrient. Because we are normally able to manufacture this vitamin from sunlight the medical scientists are calling it a hormone not a vitamin.

Why then are so many deficient? In Sydney 60% are deficient, in

Melbourne 70% and in Tassie over 80% are deficient. It seems firstly that the ‘Slip, Slop, Slap’ program may have been too effective. There is also mounting evidence that many prescription drugs and especially the Cholesterol lowering drugs – the Statin drugs – prevent our bodies from manufacturing D3. This is a very serious problem.

Deficiency in D3 is a leading factor in a massive range of illnesses and may result in a number of cancers, it contributes to bone density problems such as Osteoporosis, it exacerbates other hormonal issues such as PMT, Endometriosis, PCOS and Menopausal problems. In children it is the cause of Ricketts and this is now of growing concern. It is associated with increasing falls in the elderly and increased risk of fractures resulting from these falls.

Vitamin D3 deficiency is closely associated with Breast, Colon and Prostate Cancers and supplementation of D3 has shown to be effective in preventing the growth of cancers. Research is under way to determine if D3 will actually prevent cancer.

As there is no evidence to show that supplementation of D3 is in any way harmful, even at high doses, it seems prudent that all who may be pre-disposed to any form of cancer should ensure adequate levels of D3 daily. As sitting in the sun before 10 and after 3 during autumn to spring is largely ineffective (the angle of the sun’s rays is wrong for skin conversion) it is prudent for us all to take supplements.

However (there is always a however isn’t there?) in order to absorb and utilise vitamin D3 properly you need other nutrients. Vitamin K is also needed as are a range of other minerals which are often deficient in our diets. Many people take a multi vitamin but few take a multi mineral. Unfortunately many of these on the market are not organic and our bodies are unable to fully utilise them (a bit like sucking on a rusty nail to get your iron). ART FROM THE HEARTResidents from the Edinglassie

Retirement Village at Emu Plains are reaping the benefits of its highly successful Art From the Heart program.

For years, scientific research and aged care research has suggested mental stimulation such as creative art can help older people fight memory loss and may even delay dementia. The fortnightly classes, run by local artists, are providing plenty of stimulation for the residents. For some, the art program is the highlight of their fortnight.

You will be spending more time outside with your pet in the next few months, enjoying the sunshine. But while you are having fun, you will need to keep an eye out for the potential dangers that the warmer weather brings. Here are a few tips from the experts at Railway Row Vetinary Clinic …

1. Sunburn Most people don’t think about their

pets getting sunburned but they certainly can. Areas that are commonly affected are the ears, eyelids and nose, especially pink or white areas. Use a pet approved sunscreen to protect your pet and make an appointment with us if you notice any sunburnt areas as pets can suffer from skin cancer too.

2. Water safety Not all pets can swim so you should

always introduce pets to water gradually. Never leave pets unattended around a pool and make sure they can get out if they happened to fall in, but remember that pets cannot climb pool ladders so steps are essential. Never let your pet drink pool water. Pets on a boat always require close supervision.

3. Snakes and ticksThese critters are out and about at this

What better way to motivate yourself than by setting a challenge? Panthers Triathlon Club (PTC) hosts a range of terrific events throughout the year, even for the rank beginner.

PTC has had a wonderful start to the New Year. Their last club race was almost at full capacity proving that even though it’s holidays, a good race can never be missed.

Many of the club members have commenced their Ironman training in earnest and are using club races as a means of setting benchmarks in their training progress.

It really is fantastic to see so many club members enjoying themselves and bringing their families and friends along to every club race.

Likewise, the Juniors are really enjoying all that PTC has to offer – fun and safe races, the chance to wear their PTC rash shirts proud and to follow up with lots of great food. It’s always a blast to hear their laughter as they accomplish their own race like their Mum or Dad.

Big Year Ahead for Karate ClubThe Goshin Ryu Karate club at Emu

Plains is going from strength to strength. This year will consolidate a successful 2011 for the club, with three members currently in training to earn their prestig-ious black belts at the end of the year.

Under the guidance of instructors Brian and Madeleine McCabe of Glenmore Park, the three women – mother and daugh-ter Julie and Loren Thompson, and Vicki McAuley – will undergo intense physi-cal and psychological training over the next ten months in preparation for the black belt grading camp in Blackheath in December.

At the Goshin Ryu National champion-ships last June, Sensei Madeleine, Julie and Vicki won the Synchronised Kata event for the second year running. It was quite an accomplishment for the ladies, since the team age average is 50 years and they were competing against much younger and testosterone driven teams of black belt males. It just goes to prove that age is no barrier! The trio also took all the trophies in the Veteran Women’s Kata event.

The Emu Plains club was the most suc-cessful of all clubs at the Nationals. They had 11 members competing, ranging in

age from 8 to 53, and every one of them came home with a trophy or three.

The style of karate known as Goshin Ryu was founded in the late 1960’s by Dr Richard Bradford. Dr Bradford, 8th Dan, has been training in martial arts for 50 years and was Australia’s National Coach from 1977 to 1993. Goshin Ryu Karate is the most successful Karate club in the government recognised Australian Karate Federation.

Third dan black belt Brian McCabe has been training with the Goshin Ryu karate club for over 30 years. His wife Madeleine has been training since 1989. She is a 2nd Dan black belt. They started the Emu Plains branch seven years ago and have built it up to a current membership of over 30.

The club trains on Wednesday evenings at Emu Plains Primary School in Emerald Street. Kids classes start at 6pm, with the general class beginning at 7.00pm. Karate is a great personal development system teaching life skills that develop self confi-dence, self esteem and discipline, as well as being great fun!
