(ARA) — Facing a struggling

economy and record levels of

unemployment, millions of young

people are heading back to thousands

of U.S. colleges and universities this

fall, anxious about their job prospects

over the next few years.

Kick-starting a new career in this

challenging economy won’t be easy as

graduates from the classes of 2011,

2010 and 2009 have learned the hard

way. But, with a little determination

and preparation, college students can

increase their odds of landing a job

right out of school and laying a

foundation for future success.

One of the most important areas of

concern for college students who plan

on entering the workforce soon is the

Internet. While it can be extremely

helpful in finding internships and jobs,

it can also cripple your career

prospects, according to FindLaw.com,

a leading online destination for legal

information. College students must

pay extra attention to their use of the

Internet. Embarrassing or

inappropriate photos, messages,

opinions and documents can live on

the Internet for years, and can

negatively impact a young person’s

search for gainful employment.

Here are some additional tips from

FindLaw.com on what college

students should do now to prepare to

land the job of their dreams right out

of school:

Don’t embellish your resume

Compiling a resume is the first step to

finding a job – or even an internship

while you’re attending college. Go to

the job placement center at your

college or university to get tips on how

to write an effective resume. But take

heed: Exaggerating accomplishments

on your resume will more often end up

hurting you than helping you.

Companies have become more

sophisticated in conducting

background and reference checks

through job application forms and

resumes. Instead, focus on using

keywords and figures to highlight your

strengths and to demonstrate

increasing levels of responsibility.

Watch what you post online

Savvy employers use the Internet,

including social networking sites such

as LinkedIn, Facebook, MySpace,

Bebo and Twitter to determine if you’ll

be a good fit for their organization.

When posting online, avoid foul

language, inappropriate pictures, lewd

jokes, and references to drug abuse and

excessive alcohol consumption. Avoid

posting offensive statuses, and limit

the number of posts on Facebook and

other online forums. Too many

postings on Facebook or Twitter says

you’re spending too much time on

social networking sites rather than on

your studies.

Build a work history

Most employers want to see job

candidates who are building a track

record of successful employment –

taking on roles that increase in

responsibility from one job to the next.

Employers want to see results and

accomplishments, especially as it

relates to your field of interest. To get

the experience needed to land the job

of your dreams, college students and

those just out of college may need to

take jobs or internships that may not

pay as much as they would like. You

should also consider volunteering with

non-profit organizations in order to

gain critical skills. If you’re entering

your junior year in college, it is not too

soon to be seeking internships in the

profession or industry that you’re

interested in working in.

Job Fairs are excellent places to land jobs, because employers are there specifically toline up candidates for interviews, and some even interview and hire on-the-spot. While Job Fairs can be overwhelming with many people waiting to see the sameemployer, the pressure of on-the-spot interviewing, noise and sometimes confu-sion, they are often a great tool and a good way to meet company representativesface-to-face. Before you go, review some tips on participating, which will help makeyour Career Fair experience a positive one.

ResumesBefore the Job Fair, do a little research to find out how many companies are goingto be on site. Plan to take enough resumes for all the companies you know you’reinterested in, and at least one resume for every two companies that you’re not asinterested in. While you may think that you are indifferent in a certain company, thedisplay or a chat with a company representative may change your mind. Be sure thatyour resume is current and accurate. Have someone proofread them before youmake copies! Typos and other errors can be considered sloppiness on your partand your resume quickly “screened out” because of it. Finally, don’t be afraid to dis-tribute your resume to company representatives, that’s what you are there for!

Prepare a “One-Minute Commercial” Your “One-Minute Commercial” should be a compilation, summarized, of your re-sume and cover letter. It should be a brief but descriptive statement about yourabilities and skills as well as what you’re looking for in a new job. It is very much likeyour objective statement. First, illustrate the important details that support yourqualifications for the position. This is your chance to let the company representativeknow why you are uniquely suited for the position you are seeking. Brevity, speci-ficity and perhaps most importantly relativity are the keys!

4 Education & Career Services

You've probably heard it a million times:

Personal branding is important to the

success of a job search. Why is it so

important? Because as a unique job seeker,

it helps define you as an individual and

makes you stand out as a prime candidate.

There are aspects of your background

that make you incredibly unique and

highly qualified-and your job is to

highlight those aspects so that hiring

managers don't have to guess whether

you're perfect for the job. To help you get

started, here are five personal branding

techniques to try when working on your

resume.

1. Develop a Strong Title/Job Target

Your title/job target is the first impression

a hiring manager will have when reading

your resume. This short phrase provides a

quick summary of what you've

accomplished and why you are the right

person for the job. It helps to set the tone

for who you are as a candidate. This tone

should remain consistent throughout the

resume and any other information the

manager receives about you.

2. Add Links to Your Professional

Profiles

Another great technique for building

your personal brand is to link to your

professional profiles. Keep in mind that,

most times, your resume is submitted

online and can easily be linked to Web

sites. If you link to your LinkedIn and

Twitter profiles, as well as one or two

other professional sites you have, you give

the employer a chance to learn more about

the contributions you've made in your

field.

3. Summarize Your Career Highlights

You can also develop your personal brand

by creating a career summary section. You

want the most important moments of

your career to stand out in this section.

These moments might include your

winning salesperson of the year five times,

or your efforts as a team leader that

resulted in record revenues. It's good to

list at least four highlights, but make sure

they're tailored to the job for which you're

applying.

4. Turn Your Duties into Initiatives

Instead of listing the duties you were

given on any job you've worked, it's great

to brand yourself by listing your

initiatives. So if you were in charge of

taking phone messages and created a new

system that made message delivery more

effective, don't just write, "Answered calls

and delivered messages". Write a couple of

sentences starting with "Developed" or

"Initiated", then talk about what you

created and how it helped the message-

taking process flow more smoothly

throughout the office.

5. Consider Testimonials

Adding testimonials to resumes is still a

unique concept to many job seekers, so

taking this route could automatically

make you stand out. Find two or three

reputable references in your field to vouch

for your greatness in a one- or two-

sentence quote. This could really help to

back you up as a strong candidate.

There's nothing better than standing out

as the strongest candidate each time you

apply for a job. Increase the odds of being

that person by developing your personal

brand in your resume.

Self-Employment in Maine Research Brief, Maine Department of Labor, Center for Workforce Research and Information

Self-employment is an important source of jobs in Maine.

About 66,000 workers said their primary job was

unincorporated self-employment in 2010, accounting for

an estimated 10.3 percent of employed residents.

Nationally, the unincorporated self-employed accounted

for seven percent of total employment in 2010. The Maine

rate of self-employment ranged between 10 and 12

percent in the 2000s, well above the national rate.

Published estimates of self-employment for Maine from

the Current Population Survey (CPS) include only total

counts of the unincorporated self-employed from 2000 to

2010. Unpublished (CPS) and American Community

Survey (ACS) data in this brief comes from the Integrated

Census Public Use Microdata Series. These data are

subject to sampling error and detailed estimates must be

viewed with caution.

The incorporated self-employed are counted as wage and

salary workers in published employment estimates since

they are legally employees of their own business.

According to unpublished CPS data, incorporated self-

employment in Maine accounted for a little over 4 percent

of total employment in 2010.

SELF-EMPLOYMENT HAS

DECLINED SLIGHTLY

While self-employment rates move up and down, over the

course of several years the official unincorporated rate has

declined slightly. Between 1994 and 2000 the rate of

unincorporated self-employment in Maine averaged 11.8

percent compared to 10.3 percent for 2001 to 2010. The

incorporated self-employment rate was unchanged at 3.5

percent.

Nationally, the unincorporated rate fell from 8.0 percent

(1994-2000 average) to 7.3 percent (2001-2009); the

incorporated rate rose from 3.3 to 3.7 percent. The U.S.

Bureau of Labor Statistics cites the increased likelihood of

businesses to incorporate to get the traditional benefits of

the corporate structure as a reason for the shift in the

corporative status of the self-employed.

There are a number of factors that impact the number of

self-employed. The mid-to-late 1990s were characterized

by rapid employment growth and low unemployment.

Employment growth slowed in the early 2000s, with a

period of employment decline and higher unemployment

in the late 2000s. Certainly, the sluggish labor market of

the early 2000s and the Great Recession of the late 2000s

negatively affected the demand for services of many of the

self-employed. At the same time, a countering affect could

result in a rise in self-employment as wage and salary

workers losing their jobs start new businesses.

Further complicating the issue, the CPS classifies

employment based on the job at which the most hours are

worked. A person holding a wage and salary job, who is

also self-employed, is classified as a wage and salary

worker if he/she works the most hours at the wage and

salary job. If the wage and salary job is lost, the person

would still be counted as employed—a self-employed

worker. Thus, the count of self-employed would rise even

though total employment would not.

With all of these factors considered, it does appear that

the weak labor market of the 2000s had a dampening

effect on the number of self-employed in Maine.

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE

SELF-EMPLOYED

The following characteristics of the unincorporated self-

employed are developed from the ACS that differs slightly

from the CPS in methodologies and timing of the surveys.

Three-year average estimates are used to improve the

reliability of the data.

The Self-Employed Were More Likely

to be Male and Older

A larger percentage of the self-employed were older and

male compared to wage and salary workers. The self-

employed had higher shares of workers with little

education and the highest level of education.

About one in five of workers aged 65 and over were self-

employed Only five percent of workers age 16 to 34 were

self-employed. Among the possible reasons for the oldest

age cohort having a much higher self-employment rate

that those age 16 to 34 are older workers have more

resources to start a business (human and financial capital)

and older workers retired from wage and salary jobs may

become self-employed to supplement retirement income.

Self-employment rates were highest for workers with a

high school education or less and a graduate degree,

reflecting high proportions of the self-employed in

construction, and management and professional

occupations.

The Self-Employed were Working in a Wide Variety of

Industries and Occupations

The self-employed were more heavily concentrated in the

construction and professional and business services

industries compared to wage and salary workers. The

construction industry employed about one-quarter of the

self-employed. Professional and business services and

educational and health care services accounted for over 25

percent.

While the self-employed are in a variety of occupations,

management, professional, and related, and construction,

extraction, maintenance, and repair occupations accounted

for 50 percent of the self-employed, reflecting industry

concentration.

Over 40 percent of those employed in agriculture,

forestry, fishing, hunting, and mining; about 30 percent of

construction workers; and almost 30 percent of the

workers in other services, which contains a variety of

industries such as barber shops and shoe repair, were self-

employed.

Major occupations with the highest self-employment

rates were farming, fishing, forestry and logging (46

percent) and construction (24 percent).

IN SUMMARY

Nearly one in seven Maine workers were self-employed in

2009, either incorporated or unincorporated, compared to

about one in nine nationally. While a slight decline in self-

employment was recorded during the sluggish labor

market of the 2000s, the self-employed remain an

important part of the Maine economy.

contact for interested companies and

conveys a lasting impression about you,

your best practices and attention to

detail.

Is your greeting inspiring?

The fact is, many job-seekers lose

interview opportunities because a

judgment call was made after listening to

an unprofessional voicemail greeting -

one that negatively influenced a decision

by a potential hiring manager. An

example: "Hey, I'm not here so leave a

message and I'll get back to you."

Intuitively, this voice greeting is clearly

not consistent with the image portrayed

by the inspiring resume that motivated a

hiring manager to pick up a phone and

call you. It generates a level of doubt

regarding the caliber of the candidate.

Be attentive to details

Always verify that your voice recording

is clear, concise and professional before

embarking on your job search. This may

be the first contact that the employer has

with you after reviewing your resume. A

message recorded with background noise

or one that lacks clarity does not convey

a superior level of professionalism and

proper etiquette. Remember, you're in

sales mode, and attention to detail is vital

to maintain a competitive edge. An

appropriate greeting may be:

"Hello, this is John Doe, and I'm not

available to answer your call at this time.

However, your call is important to me.

Please leave your name and a brief

message, including your phone number,

and I will return your call at my earliest

convenience. Thank you and have a nice

day."

Consistently presenting yourself in a

professional and responsive manner at all

touch points is vital during a job search.

An email address such as "partyanimal"

does not bode well for the job-seeker.

Initial impressions make or break

employment opportunities.

Don't let small yet vital omissions

tarnish the way you're perceived by

people you wish to impress. By focusing

on the details, you leave a positive and

lasting impression throughout the job-

search process.

W e a r e a n E q u a l O p p o r t u n i t y E m p l o y e r .

I often hear that sending a

handwritten thank you note is so "last

year" or "old fashioned". When I'm

social media sites and post I'm writing

thank you notes I am immediately

bombarded by people trying to sell me

one of the many services that you can

subscribe to that will send a thank you

note for you. I don't think machine

written and signed thank-you notes

have the same sincerity as an "old

fashioned" handwritten thank you

note. Below are my personal

experiences that show the ROI (return

on investment) of sending a

handwritten thank you note.

1. Job Offer

We are often told to send a thank you

note after a job interview. I, like most

people, thought this was corny.

However, I sent a thank you note after

having a job interview for a job I really

wanted. Guess what, I received an offer

for the job. After this experience I have

sent a thank you note after every job

interview and I have been offered every

job. A handwritten thank you note is

key to standing out amongst the

competition in today's highly

competitive job market. One thank you

note netted me a job offer of over 32

thousand dollars and a subsequent

thank you note netted me a job offer of

60 thousand dollars.

2. Paid Speaking Engagement

Recently I attended a conference and

sent the conference organizer a

handwritten thank you note. He

emailed me thanking me for the note

and commented that no one sends

them any longer. The conference

organizer then asked if I was available

to be a paid speaker at various

upcoming conferences he had

scheduled. He stopped by my office

the following week and offered me an

additional paid speaking engagement.

This one thank you note has netted me

over one thousand dollars so far.

3. Relationship Building

Thank you notes are a great way to

build relationships. If you recently

received a gift basket or other type of

gift by winning a raffle the thank you

note will not only show the business

owner that provided the gift basket

that you appreciated it but it will also

show that you were raised with

manners. This starts the rapport

building process.

4. Repeat Clients & Referrals

Do you send thank you notes to your

clients? I have and it pays off in

customers that feel valued. Valued

customers and clients will refer people

to your business resulting in additional

revenue. They will also return to do

business with you. Your return on

investment is unlimited.

5. Joint Ventures

When you read an article or blog that

has great content do you send a thank-

you note to let the author know how

much you appreciated it? This strategy

has led to several joint ventures that

has increased my business revenue.

Thank-you notes are not a thing of

the past. Hand written thank you notes

are something you should be sending

on a regular basis after receiving a gift,

learning a new strategy or attending a

job interview. Do not worry that you

have horrible handwriting. The

recipient will appreciate the time and

effort you took to show your

appreciate. The return on investment is

unlimited. I encourage you to go right

now and purchase a package of thank

you notes and a book of stamps to keep

on hand. This small investment will

net you big returns.

If you left your previous job in good

standing, your old boss is more likely

to give you a good reference. The

better the reference, the more likely

you’ll get that job you’re applying for.

Former coworkers can often make for

good references as well. It’s important

to stay in touch with previous

employers and co-workers who can

serve as references for future

employment. In addition to on-the-job

references, professors and coaches at

your college can serve as references.

Build your networks

It is not too soon to begin building a

professional network of contacts while

you are in college. Create a LinkedIn

page to begin promoting your

experience, accomplishments and

skills, as well as to maintain your

contacts with professors, mentors and

fellow students. Maintain a blog to

showcase your career and volunteer

accomplishments. Join professional

associations to network with others in

your chosen field.

Establish mentor relationships

Identify two to three working

professionals in your profession from

whom you can obtain career advice and

wisdom. Invite them for coffee to learn

about what you can do to enhance your

career direction.

Study the job market

While you’re in school, not after you

graduate, is the time to study the job

market and find out what industries

are hiring and how much you can

expect to be paid upon graduating

from college. For example, a 2009

Labor Department study of college

graduates under 25 showed that those

who majored in engineering were more

likely to find jobs just out of college

than those who majored in the

humanities. You may be passionate for

what you’re studying, but it’s just as

important to be realistic about your job

prospects.

Assess your student debt

According to the John J. Heldrich

Center for Workforce Development,

the average 2010 four-year college

graduate earned a median starting

salary of $27,000. As a student, you

should analyze the amount of student

debt you are taking on to achieve your

degree in light of the amount of money

you’ll make in your chosen field.

Graduating with a mountain of

student debt can make it more difficult

to establish a good credit history and

take the risks that are necessary in

building a solid career.
