There are many different reasons why

you might be interested in a job for

which you’re overqualified. Maybe you

need less stress in your life, maybe

you’re returning to the workforce after

some time away, or maybe you’re

making a career change and need to get

some entry-level experience.

Regardless of the reason, applying for

jobs for which you’re overqualified can

be tricky business.

Common sense tells us that employers

should want the best educated, most

qualified candidates for any given

position. In reality, employers want to

hire employees who are going to stick

around, because bringing in new

employees is expensive. Many

companies assume that someone with a

degree (or two) will quickly grow bored

performing an administrative job.

Therefore, employers sometimes sort

obviously overqualified employees

immediately into the discard pile.

If you’re applying for jobs that don’t

require as much experience or

education as you possess, it’s perfectly

okay to omit some of your professional

history. The objective behind writing

your resume is to secure an interview.

Once you’re in that interview, you’ll

have the opportunity to tell the

company why you’re interested in a

position that may not seem like a

challenge. However, you’ll never get

that opportunity if you don’t make it

onto the short list of great candidates.

AUGUSTA, ME – The Finance

Authority of Maine (FAME), which

administers state and federal college grants

and scholarships, is pleased to announce

that College Goal Sunday’s dates and

locations will be expanded this year as part

of a new College Goal Maine to better

meet the needs of Maine students and

families. In addition to ten regional events

to be held Sunday, January 30th, forty other

sites will be offering assistance during the

months of January and early February.

For the past seven years, College Goal

Sunday has drawn thousands of families to

locations all over the state in late January

for free workshops to help complete the

Free Application for Federal Student Aid

(FAFSA), which is required by most

educational institutions for financial aid

consideration.

FAME recently announced that the

program is expanding and will no longer be

a one-day event. Rather, the entire month

of January will be deemed “College Goal

Maine,” dedicated to helping students and

families complete the FAFSA. Similar

workshops also will take place in early

February.

All locations will use computer labs,

allowing participants to access and, in many

cases, complete the FAFSA online during

the seminar. Line-by-line assistance will be

provided by financial aid professionals from

Maine colleges and universities. All

attendees are encouraged to bring recent

tax information or estimates. Residents of

all ages who are interested in college or post

secondary education should consider

attending.

“FAME is pleased to be offering Maine

families and students more convenient

options for completing this important first

step to get financial assistance to pursue

higher education,” said FAME Chief

Executive Officer Beth Bordowitz. She

noted that less than 40 percent of Maine’s

graduating high school seniors file the

FAFSA form by May 1st, the deadline for

many state education grants. “Many

financial aid applicants are filing too late

for grants, loans and scholarships,” said

Bordowitz. “FAME wants to encourage

earlier applications so Maine families and

students can take full advantage of all

available resources.”

Financial assistance can come from a

variety of resources, including grants,

scholarships, federal student loans, and

work-study jobs. Application deadlines

vary at each school. Students are urged to

contact schools directly about filing

deadlines. “Applying for aid on time and as

early as possible is as important as ever,”

added Bordowitz.

program and locations, visit

A JOB VS. ACAREER:FIGURINGOUT HOW TOGET THERE

By

Cyn

on

Once you know what you want to pursue – a job or a

career – you need to figure out how to achieve your end

goal. Consider the following questions:

What is your work experience?

If there is a particular industry in which you worked

previously, it will be easier to move from one job to

another in that same industry. For example, if you

worked in a restaurant, you are more likely to change

positions within the food-service industry. A career

change – for example from finance to social services

– might require some additional education and training.

What is your education?

Even if your first job did not match your educational

background, your education and training can help you

move to a new position. For example, maybe you

received training in business applications and office

procedures, but your first job was filling orders in a

warehouse. The skills you gained on the job, and the

education you have, might suit you for a position with

an order fulfillment company, where you may encounter

long-term career options.

Do you have the skills to switch from one industry

to another?

If you want to switch from one career to another, you

can. Just remember that you need to leverage the skills

you gained to meet the needs of a new career. Create a

list of your strengths and skills acquired in your previous

positions and make notes on how they would relate to a

new career.

If many of your skills are non-transferable – perhaps

because they were specialized or you worked in a small

environment that did not keep up with changing

technology – consider returning to school for some

training. Regardless of whether you can afford to quit

working to go back to school, first consider taking a

night class or two at the local community college and

explore your options.

PORTLAND, Maine — January is

National Mentoring Month, and

Goodwill Industries of Northern New

England is helping area youth succeed by

helping them overcome disadvantages and

avoid delinquency through the Goodwill

GoodGuides® youth mentoring program.

The effort is part of a national program

that helps teens finish school and

transition into productive careers through

the guidance of trusted adults.

“Goodwill has a long history of helping

people find work,” said Judy Stone, Board

President of Goodwill Industries of

Northern New England. “A crucial part of

that history is making sure that families are

strong. GoodGuides can help keep youth

who are at-risk get on the right path, away

from trouble and toward a better future.

That’s good for everyone involved.”

The GoodGuides program in Portland is

made possible through a two-year,

$299,723 grant to Goodwill Industries of

Northern New England. The funds come

from a $19.1 million grant to Goodwill

Industries International from the U.S.

Department of Justice, which is dispersed

to 56 independent Goodwill agencies

around the country.

The overall goal of the Goodwill

GoodGuides program is to help youth

build career plans and skills, and prepare

for school completion, post-secondary

training and productive work by providing

structured and supportive relationships

with trusted adult mentors. It targets

youths between the ages of 12 and 17 who

are at-risk for dropping out of school,

facing legal troubles, or at risk for

delinquency due to issues such as abuse,

disabilities, drug or alcohol dependence, or

gang membership.

“Through GoodGuides, we are offering

expanded mentoring services to the youth

of our community,” said Judy Stone.

“Goodwill is recruiting, training and

supporting volunteer mentors to engage

youth in promoting their career

development and life skills.”

Goodwill will be recognizing mentors and

youth, as well as recruiting new mentors, at

the first annual GoodGuides Recognition

Night, which will be held Tuesday, Jan. 11,

from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Portland Public

Library. The public is invited to learn

more about how you can inspire a youth to

succeed. Light refreshments will be

served.

Remember, hiring managers make

decisions about candidates based on

very quick impressions, usually 30

seconds or less. It’s best to offer

them just enough information to

show that you’re a great match for

the job description. Don’t worry

that you’re selling yourself

short—remember, the goal is to get

an interview, not to act like you’re

not as smart as you are. Once you

get that interview, you can surprise

the interviewer with how

competent and engaging you are—

and how much you want the

opportunity they have to offer.

Never tell an employer, “Even though I have

no specific experience in this field . . . “ A

negative statement will burn its way into an employer’s mind. Accentuate the

W E A R E A N E Q U A L O P P O R T U N I T Y E M P L O Y E R .

(StatePoint) – Whether out of necessity

or to follow their dreams, many people

are changing careers after establishing

themselves in a different field.

Over eight million Americans between

44 and 77 are embarking on new careers.

And new research from the non-profit

Civic Ventures estimates that by 2018

there will be 3.5 million more jobs in

healthcare and social service, 800,000

new education jobs and 400,000

nonprofit ones. These jobs build on work

and life experiences, making them good

matches for career changers.

But career expansion takes place in

every sector, and many are following

their passions into creative fields.

One such success story is that of Rick

Mofina, a former journalist who became

a novelist and has since written 11

exciting thrillers. It helped, of course,

that he was able to draw on his reporting

experiences which involved covering a

horrific serial-killing case in California

and an armored car-heist in Las Vegas,

as well as going on patrol with the Royal

Canadian Mounted Police near the

Arctic.

“We’ve all had adventures that could

turn out to be useful in our work lives,”

says Mofina, whose latest novel, “The

Panic Zone,” features a reporter sent on

a dangerous assignment investigating the

murder of two of his colleagues.

If you’re considering an encore career,

you needn't have been a jet-setting

journalist reporting from Kuwait's

border with Iraq, as was Mofina. Here

are some tips for anybody deciding

what’s next:

For Love or Money

Determine if your savings will allow you

to embark on a new career without

return on investment. If so, be

adventurous and follow passions. If not,

seek to use your existing skills in new

ways.

Narrow Your Search

Ask for informational interviews with

different organizations to determine

where you might fit within a new field.

For example, business-minded

professionals seeking to help kids might

be ideal for nonprofit management

positions.

Dig Deep

Draw creatively on previous experiences.

“Our lives might seem

compartmentalized, but every experience

informs the others,” says Mofina, whose

interaction with two CIA agents in

Jamaica turned into a fiction plotting

device. You may be surprised at how

many experiences you’ve had that you

can leverage into a new career.

Find a Mentor

Just as you have helpful knowledge for

someone starting out, someone younger

may be able to teach you a thing or two.

For example, a senior could learn

computer skills from a recent college

grad in return for sharing knowledge of

an industry.

Tap Resources

Join professional organizations in fields

that interest you. Subscribe to

newsletters or trade magazines. Web

sites like encore.org also can help with

free career resources.

Know Thyself

Do you want to work a few hours

weekly, or are you willing to toil hard to

launch a business or writing career? The

beauty of an encore career is you now

have a choice. “My alarm is set for 4:30

am,” says Mofina, who also works as a

communications advisor and writes on

the bus to work. “But I wouldn't be able

to stop doing this if I tried.”

An encore career not only can offer cash,

but new purpose and enjoyment.

For more about Mofina and his novels,

visit rickmofina.com.

Job Fairs are excellent places to land jobs, because employers are there specifically toline up candidates for interviews, and some even interview and hire on-the-spot. While Job Fairs can be overwhelming with many people waiting to see the sameemployer, the pressure of on-the-spot interviewing, noise and sometimesconfusion, they are often a great tool and a good way to meet companyrepresentatives face-to-face. Before you go, review some tips on participating, which will help make your Career Fair experience a positive one.

ResumesBefore the Job Fair, do a little research to find out how many companies are goingto be on site. Plan to take enough resumes for all the companies you know you’reinterested in, and at least one resume for every two companies that you’re not asinterested in. While you may think that you are indifferent in a certain company, the display or a chat with a company representative may change your mind. Besure that your resume is current and accurate. Have someone proofread thembefore you make copies! Typos and other errors can be considered sloppiness onyour part and your resume quickly “screened out” because of it. Finally, don’t beafraid to distribute your resume to company representatives, that’s what you arethere for!

Prepare a “One-Minute Commercial” Your “One-Minute Commercial” should be a compilation, summarized, of yourresume and cover letter. It should be a brief but descriptive statement about yourabilities and skills as well as what you’re looking for in a new job. It is very muchlike your objective statement. First, illustrate the important details that support yourqualifications for the position. This is your chance to let the company representativeknow why you are uniquely suited for the position you are seeking. Brevity, specificity and perhaps most importantly relativity are the keys!
