Website relaunch kickstarts fostering and adoption campaign

Cumbria County Council’s fostering and adoption websites have been given a completely new look ahead of a drive to find more foster carers and adopters. The “Become part of Cumbria’s biggest family” campaign is all about raising awareness of the need for new carers and telling people about the high quality support they’ll get from Cumbria County Council.

With the web the first place most people go, revamping the websites was a top priority. The new sites have been totally overhauled with a fresh new look and improved content including information on the process of becoming a foster carer or adopter, better navigation and stories from people who’ve been through the process with the county council explaining what it’s like and why they do it.

Importantly the sites focuses on tackling the myths and common misconceptions around fostering and adoption – including busting the idea that can’t do it if you’re single or not married.

Clear information about the support the council provides its foster carers and adopters are key parts of the new sites; including information on financial support, and training and development, right through to local coffee mornings and support groups.

Anne Burns, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said:

“The county council already support over 200 foster families, but with over 600 children needing foster families we’re always looking for more people to join in. The “Become part of Cumbria’s biggest family” campaign is about giving people the confidence to get in touch and find out more, lots of people think about fostering or adoption but don’t take the next step – our new websites are the first place people should look.

“By fostering or adopting with Cumbria County Council people will get fantastic support and the satisfaction of knowing they are making a real difference to the lives of children and young people.”

Kevin, a current foster carer with Cumbria County Council, said: “The new websites are great. I know a lot of people think about fostering or adopting but don’t do anything about it. I’d encourage them to take the next step, get in touch and find out more. Fostering certainly has its ups and downs, but the satisfaction you get is huge - it’s great to see the children you care for develop and grow and to know you’ve been part of that.”

The new websites can be found at www.cumbria.gov.uk/fostering and www.cumbria.gov.uk/adoption

• For fostering enquiries contact 0303 3331216. For adoption enquiries contact 01539 713312 • Last year (2012/13) in Cumbria the fostering team made a total of 350 placements. About 20% of children placed were under 1 year old, almost 50% were 5 years or younger. Around 16% were aged between 14 and 15 years. • 25% of the council’s foster carers are single. • 60% of Cumbria’s foster carers are over 50 years old • Foster carers receive a payment of between £468 and £1276 per month for each child fostered. The payment depends on the age of the child and the carer’s skills, experience and training.
