Cumbrian businesses team up with Cumbria County Council and Esh Group to help boost students’ employment skills and prospects

150 businesses invited to launch eventNewton Rigg College, 3pm, Thursday 6th June – more welcome!

From September this year over 500 students across the whole of Cumbria will have the opportunity to boost their employment prospects and get a taste of life in the workplace.

Cumbria County Council has teamed up with construction company, Esh Group, to enable local companies to come together to deliver The Employability Skills Programme.

The Cumbrian businesses involved will be visiting schools to deliver the highly interactive scheme which involves a series of business engagement workshops and pupils creating their own employment portfolio.

Year 10 and 11 students at seven schools will take part starting at the beginning of the new academic year in September running through to April 2014.

The schools involved are:

Kirkby Stephen Grammar School Netherhall School (Maryport) Solway Community Technology College (Silloth) Whitehaven School Trinity School (Carlisle) Kirkbie Kendal School Queen Elizabeth Grammar School (Kirkby Lonsdale)

The workshops will see directors and employees of the organisations involved guiding students to help them gain an understanding of their businesses, the sectors in which they operate and the opportunities available in Cumbria.

Particular emphasis will be made of the skills required by employers, ranging from personal presentation and punctuality to communication.

Pupils successfully completing the programme will be nominated for realistic mock interviews with employers and, potentially, work experience and apprenticeship opportunities.

Cumbria County Council has invited around 150 businesses representing a wide range of sectors to an event at Newton Rigg College at 3pm on Thursday 6 June, where the Employability Skills Programme will be launched and plans for the workshops and how businesses can take part will be explained.

Esh Group, which has recently completed building the Construction Skills Centre at Lakes College, Lillyhall, has significant experience of creating similar schemes which it has successfully delivered in the North East over the last 10 years. It will lead co-ordination of the programme from the company’s regional headquarters in Kendal which it established over three years ago.

Councillor David Southward, Cumbria County Council’s cabinet member for Economic Development, said:

“These business engagement workshops are a great opportunity for Cumbrian businesses to forge links with schools and tap into their potential future workforce.

“Our young people are the key to the county’s economic future and this programme will give them a taste of the wide range of job opportunities around the county.”

Councillor Anne Burns, Cumbria County Council’s cabinet member for Children’s Services, said:

“Equipping pupils in this key age group with employment skills and information about what they can expect in the workplace is an important part of their education.

“Getting this experience now will be a major boost to their job prospects.”

Brian Manning, Chief Executive of Esh Group explained:

“At Esh Group we are passionate about developing an excellent workforce. We try to spot talent early on and support good people through training.

“To do this we have to be able to recruit good young people and over the years we’ve realised that we can play a valuable role in supporting schools to bring business alive.

“By taking the work place into the classroom we help students ‘step up’; hone their skills and cvs, understand how to make a good impression at interview and so give them the best chance of becoming excellent employees – or employers - of the future.

If successful, this pilot project could be rolled out in other schools across the county. Brian Manning continued:

“We are delighted that Cumbria County Council has taken up our offer to help run this initial programme. Through working closely with the Cumbrian businesses taking part we’re very much looking forward to seeing them benefit their own businesses from their involvement.”

A number of businesses have already ‘signed up’ to take part in the Employability Skills Programme.

Any business which would like to attend the Newton Rigg Event will be very welcome and can book a place by contacting Caroline Powney at Cumbria County Council on 07500 227 992

or email [email protected]
