El Salvador's Land Area

El Salvador lies along the coast of the Pacific Ocean,

below Honduras and Guatemala in Central America. El Salvador has three main land regions; the Coastal Lowlands, the Central Region, and the Interior Highlands. In the Coastal Lowlands there are fertile plains along the Pacific shore that extend 10 to 20 miles inland. Also in the Coastal Lowlands, large areas of land have been developed for farming. The Central Region is called the heartland of El Salvador. In the Central Region there are fertile farmlands, mountains and several inactive volcanoes such as Santa Ana. In the Interior Highlands there are the Sierra Madres. The Sierra Madres are a low mountain range made of hardened lava, rocks, and volcanic ash.

History

El Salvador’s History

El Salvador’s government became more stable in the 1800s. Then from 1913-1931, all of their presidents were rich coffee harvesters. In the year 1931, General Maximiliano Hernandez Martinez captured El Salvador’s government. Martinez ruled as dictator for twelve years. Then in the 1940s a huge group of landless Salvadoran farmers settled in the sparsely populated countryside across the border in Honduras. Martinez built many public schools and did many other things but the military's government continued to rule El Salvador through the 1970s.

For Salvadorans, the quality of life depends enormously on

where they live and if they came from a wealthy or poor family. The kids in El Salvador that are in the upper and middle class families can go to the movies, shop in modern malls, and eat at fast food restaurants. But for kids who come from the poorer families, life is very different. During harvesting season, poor children pick coffee beans and other crops, instead of going to school. Also, most of these children are expected to take care of their younger kin. When they have time to play, they play with wooden tops and marbles.
