t started life as a Coaching Inn back in the 17th
Century and has existed as a pub, inn, restaurant,
hostelry, Indian curry house, steakhouse and
general meeting place for the local area ever since. It
had been closed and vacant for more than two and
a half years before Julie and James Dawson got their
hands on it in October 2012 and returned it to itsformer glory (and some!)
The delectable meals available on The Gates
varied menus are meticulously executed by a team
of award winning chefs. All food is prepared in-
house all dishes being made from scratch. No
pre-prepared ready meals or boil-in-the-bag food
here! Best of all, The Gate is not tied to a brewery
or a pub chain company, so beer and wine is widely
varied and modestly priced to complement the fine
food. And lets not forget that The Gate is a pub in the
old tradition. Fine wine and liquors abound and, in
addition to the usual suspects, you will find no less
than five hand pumps carrying real ales and ciders,
including Wye Valley Bitter and Sharps Cornish
Doombar. And then theres the whisky -The Gate
carries one of the finest selections of single malts in
the area.

here is a well developed food culture in Wales
which combines natural farming systems, artisan producers and large scale manufacturers
supplying retail, hospitality and public sector customers.
The food produced in Wales is very diverse and includes
obvious Welsh products such as Laverbread and Bara

Welsh food and drink products have established an
international reputation. Welsh Lamb and Welsh Beef
hold protected food name status and have been joined
recently by Pembrokshire Early Potatoes and HalenMn/Anglesey Sea Salt which emphasises quality and
provenance.
Increasingly, our excellent eating establishments in
Wales are serving a wider range of Welsh produce andit is often sourced locally.

ne of the greatest things about puttingtogether a guide such as Eating Out Walesis the fact that it allows Mike and I the
chance to see the very best cooking thats on offerhere in south Wales.
Its great to see new food trends coming throughand its always a pleasure to meet new chefs andrestauranteurs. And of course, its always wonderfulto try the food thats given to us to photograph.
Without doubt, the big trend thats comingthrough this year is keeping it local; buying localproduce from local businesses and supporting thelocal economy. There really is a firm emphasis onrestaurants serving food that has been bought froma farmer or supplier down the road and thatssomething we absolutely love!
We hope that you enjoy this years EatingOut Wales it really is a treat. Weve seen someamazing meals being prepared this year and wehope that you enjoy eating them as much as weenjoying photographing and writing about them.
Why not read on and see what culinary delightsare on offer right on your doorstep?
To help you decide if a venue is right for youweve devised the key thats printed on the right ofthis page.
