38FOOD HYGIENE RATING SCHEME

WELCOME...to the Isle of Wight - where beautiful weather, stunning scenery and bountiful produce combine to produce an amazing eating experience.

Local food is hugely important here. From the farms to the sea, our produce doesn’t have to travel far to get to your plate. It’s not just the wide array of seafood and local meats - our extra hours of sunshine and micro-climate make us famous for tomatoes and garlic too.

The Island certainly has the ingredients for a perfect foodie experience. You won’t be disappointed in the variety and styles of food on offer. From luxurious fine dining to traditional pubs and specialist café’s there’s a lot on the menu. Although our local produce is at the heart of our food offering, the choices are also international. You’ll find a wide range of restaurants in our towns offering menus and cuisine from all over the world.

Whatever you order and wherever you eat you’ll be enjoying the flavour of the Isle of Wight. Whether that’s a fine dining experience or sizzling fish and chips on the seafront we hope you have an amazing time.

THE HOME OF GOOD TASTEThere is something extra special about the Isle of Wight which entices visitors and delights residents year after year, and eating out is an increasingly important part of the pleasure.Just as the Island’s scenery offers something new at every bend in the road, so the Island’s multitude of pubs, cafes, restaurants, tapas bars, snack bars, wine bars and farm shop cafes provide an amazing variety of choice. Perhaps it is just as well, because, as everyone will tell you, a couple of hours in the Island’s fresh clean air will definitely give you an appetite!

But eating out isn’t just about the food - it’s about the total experience.

We’re pleased to say that the Island continues to attract people who love good food. Even more specialist cafes and restaurants have been opened, widening the choice, and also maintaining the high standards you have a right to expect.

And as you’ll see when you browse through this guide, you’re never far away from a table with a sea view.

It really doesn’t matter where you are on the Island, either - you’ll find a good place to eat in the main towns and resorts, and in tucked away villages, too. It could be an intimate dining experience with fine food and wine, or traditional home cooking in a warm and welcoming pub, or even a superb farmhouse cream tea - you’ll be bowled over by the quality of the food, and the welcome.

LOCALLY GROWN PRODUCEThe Island is one of the sunniest places in the country, with a mild climate that helps to provide an extended growing season for the producers who supply our tables.

LOCALLY GROWN PRODUCEThere are treats in store whatever time of the year you visit, and you can enjoy the full flavour of fruit, fish, meat, bread, vegetables and dairy products knowing that it has not had too far to travel before it reaches your plate. We definitely celebrate the sea with its wide array of freshly landed world class fish. Make sure to check the specials board for the catch of the day! Ventnor, Bembridge and Yarmouth harbours deliver local lobster all year round with crab, sea bass, mackerel and bream proving particular favourites.

On land the selection is just as good with local beef, pork and veal a highlight of many menus. There’s something different throughout the year too.

In Spring, you might want to be among the first to taste the Island asparagus, as well as the garlic (which we also export to France) and locally reared lamb.

The Summer brings the most plentiful harvest from the sea, as well as a huge range of locally grown vegetables, and sweet tomatoes - not forgetting local strawberries and ice cream.

In Autumn, our orchards and vineyards yield their fruit, and the hedgerows are laden with wild berries.

Winter brings with it the appetising prospect of the Sunday roast of chicken, pork, beef or vegetarian, all of it organic or free range if you prefer.

LOCAL PRODUCE EVENTSOn the Island our food isn’t just at the centre of our table, it also dominates our calendar too.Our produce has seasons and you can make the most of whatever’s on offer, whether that’s picking up locally grown food direct from a farmer’s market or, in the summer months, attending one of the many “foodie” events that showcase local produce.

We want you to take away great memories of your time here - why not take away some local cheese, garlic or oil as a souvenir or gift?

FOOD HYGIENE RATING SCHEMEIn Spring 2011 the Isle of Wight Council’s Environmental Health team switched to a new way of publishing the hygiene standards of food businesses.Building on the success of the Council’s own 0-5 star scheme which has operated successfully since 2007, The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS) is the national scheme.

The scheme is run by local authorities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland in partnership with the Food Standards Agency and it provides at-a-glance information to consumers on the food hygiene standards found by environmental health officers at planned inspections in the Island’s 2000 food businesses.

Food businesses are rated on a scale from 0 at the bottom (meaning ‘urgent improvement necessary‘) to 5 at the top (meaning ‘very good’). The rating reflects hygiene practices, management controls and cleanliness/structural conditions.

The scheme recognises food businesses with high standards of food hygiene, whilst providing an incentive for others to improve by allowing consumers to make informed choices about where they eat or buy food from.

Look out for the A5 sized black and green stickers displayed at the entrance to food businesses. You can also find the ratings on the FSA’s website: www.food.gov.uk/ratings
