Hydrate and stay cool this summerIn response to the prediction ofvery hot weather for the nextfew weeks, the start of schoolathletics programmes and theharvest season in full swing,Western Cape GovernmentHealth is reminding people ofthefollowingguidelinestohelpprevent heat stroke and ex-haustion.

Babies, the elderly and peopleworking or exercising in a hot en-vironment are at particular riskfor heat stroke/exhaustion. Peo-ple using chronic medicationneed to drink extra water duringheat waves to ensure that theirkidneys are not further stressed.

General prevention for all ages:) Stay out of the sun if at all pos-

sible, if not) Wear a large hat to protect the

head from the sun, use an umbrel-la to add shade.

) Use a small wet towel or clothunder hats or on shoulders to helpkeep cool.

)Stayhydrated– inthecurrenttemperatures,stayinghydratedismost important – drink as muchwater as you need;

) Always carry water with you.

) Should you use a chronicmedication, such as high bloodpressure or diabetes medicationremember that becoming dehy-drated places extra stress on thekidneys, drinkamplecleanwater.

) Use a rehydration solution ifyou are thirsty even though youare drinking water: Mix the fol-lowing together in a clean bottle1F water, 8 teaspoons sugar and½ a teaspoon of salt. This is safefor all ages to drink especially forthosepeoplewhoworkorexerciseoutdoors, such as children prac-tising athletics and road or farmworkers.

) Ensure that the elderly andinfirm have easy access to water.

Tips for babies and children:) Babies: Breastfeed on de-

mand – breast milk is all that ba-bies younger than 6 months re-quire, you need not give the babywater or tea to ‘cool down’, theyonly need breast milk.

) Breast feeding mom’s mustremember to drink extra water, cold rooibos tea also makes a re-freshing and healthy drink.

) Take your baby to the clinicat the first sign of diarrhoea and/or vomiting.

) Keep babies in the shade orindoors.

) Wipe baby down with a cleandamp cloth – this will help keepthem cool.

) Do not cover babies in a lotof clothing and blankets; lightclothing is sufficient.

Older children:) Keep babies and children in

the shade.) Avoid sports activities if pos-

sible, if sport is essential; ensurethat there is a lot of water and re-hydration solution available.

) Children must wear hats andsunblock.

) Keep children indoors be-tween 11:00 and 16:00.

Tips for those working outside:This is for sports people, teach-

ersand/orcoachesandemployersof builders, gardeners and othersrequired to work outside:

) Keep your head covered, place a wet cloth under your hatto help keep cool.

) Make sure that there is lotsof cool, clean water to drink.

) Take regular, short breaks inthe shade.

) When taking a break, pourwater over your head to help the

body cool down.Symptoms of heat exhaustion/

stroke:Heat stroke can be fatal and

should be treated as a medicalemergency. Heat exhaustion is aless severe condition but canquickly progress to heat stroke ifleft untreated. Heat exhaustionand heat stroke occur when thebody is unable to lower its temper-aturetonormal levels throughtheskin or by sweating. Dehydrationcan cause heat stroke because thebody is unable to sweat fastenough to dissipate the heat.

Signs of heat exhaustion in-clude:

) Nausea or vomiting) A pale pallor, (skin colour)) Tiredness and weakness) Headache) Muscle cramps and dizzinessIf the symptoms are severe or

the victim has a heart conditionor high blood pressure, seek ur-gent medical help.

Give the person the oral rehy-dration solution described above.Donotaddtoomuchsalt – themix-tureshould taste like tears.Sportsdrinks or commercial oral rehy-drationsolutionarealsoeffective.

As jy self onseker is oor jou kind se vordering, gaan praat met hul onderwyser.

se gebeurtenisse by die skool.Besoek ook gereeld jou naaste biblioteekmet

hulle.

(”Is

daardie letter ’n ‘b’ of ’n ‘d’?”)Doen basiese sommemet jou kind, soos as die

In gr. 1 gaan jou kind oor driedimensionele

voorwerpe leer (sfere, balle, bokse, prismas) entweedimensionele vorms (sirkels, driehoeke envierkante).

Iets ook so eenvoudig soos om ’n kalender by-

NLB to focus more on earlychildhood developmentThe National Lotteries Board (NLB)would like to encourage more early child-hood development initiatives to respondto the organisation’s calls for funding, says Charlotte Mampane, chief executiveof the NLB.Early childhood development is critical

in ensuring that children have the bestchance in life and the NLB would like toseemoreresourcesbeingdirectedtowardsthese causes.“The NLB is keen to play its part in en-

suring that no child is left behind.”Mampane says the NLB is proud of the

early childhood development pro-grammes that the organisation hasbrought under its wings including Refent-se Preschool and Day Care Centre in Bot-shabelo, Free State, which received fund-ing of up to R1 353 900.

The funding was allocated for opera-tions, building renovations and forvehicle acquisition andmaintenance pur-poses.“However, unless the NLB receives

applications from early childhood devel-opment centres on time and in the correctformat, our hands as the NLBwill remaintied.”Mampane is pleased to see somany com-

munity organisations emerging through-out the country focusing on early child-hood development.“Wewould like to join their fight to give

every child in South Africa an adequatestart in life regardless of their family cir-cumstances.“We want to build a South Africa where

a child’s family circumstances do notdetermine their destiny,” says Mampane.

Drakenstein Gazette General - Algemeen Friday 23 January 20154

SSttaarr SSiiggnnssStar Signs22 December to21 JanuaryCAPRICORN

At this time you are inclined to invest your time and moneyinto making your environment more beautiful and

comfortable. You may also wish to enhance your personalappearance in some way, such as getting a new hair style orpurchasing clothing, cosmetics, and the like. Social gatherings

are also very positive for you now.

21 January To20 FebruaryAQUARIUS

Significant changes and opportunities face you at this time butmaking the correct decision about what to do is not easy. This is aperiod of critical decisions and transition. A major change in your

life can occur now (new job, relocating, ending a long-termrelationship or beginning a new one, etc.). In fact, it is not unusual

for several important changes of this nature to be occurring.

20 February to21 MarchPISCES

Today it is easy for you to concentrate on your work, to eliminatewhat is superfluous or distracting you from what you really need todo. You have the self-control and discipline to apply yourself to tasksthat you may have been avoiding. You want to put your affairs in

order and have a greater tolerance for tedium than usual. This is agood time to tackle mundane chores and practical business.

21 March to21 AprilARIES

This is not the best time to schedule any activity that calls for tact, diplomacy, or caution, as you are inclined to be extremely

straightforward, direct, and to the point in all of your interactions. Yousay exactly what you think, and in fact are even inclined to be verballyaggressive, pushy, or perhaps sarcastic. Your mind is very sharp now, so

this is a good time to "attack" intellectual or mental work.

21 April to21 MayTAURUS

Some change in attitude towards your ideals andspiritual values occurs now. This change is very inner andgradual, so it is not likely that you will have any great

concern or difficulty about these changes. A new attitudetoward the religious beliefs that you were taught as a

child is very likely to develop now.

22 June to23 JulyCANCER

This is a good time to schedule social activities or even businessmeetings where tact and friendliness would be a plus. You act as a

diplomat and harmonizer between people with differing viewpoints. Also, attending cultural events such as an art show or a play isfavored. Thoughts of love, an appreciation for beauty, and an

aesthetic enjoyment of your surroundings are brought to the fore.

21 May to22 JuneGEMINI

At this time you enjoy emotional satisfaction and harmony inyour home life. Relationships with women run smoothly. If youhave a solid emotional base in your life, you will receive thebenefits of that. If not, this is a good time to begin makingconnections with people and also to discover what gives real

emotional nourishment and fulfillment.

23 Julie to24 AugustLEO

Stress which has been building up both at work andin your family relationships needs to be released

now. Try to work out or find ways to express yourselfphysically, like working in the yard or playing sports;otherwise, you are prone to becoming pugnacious

with the people you are closest to.

24 August to23 SeptemberVIRGO

Your desire for pleasure, ease, and affection is brought to thefore and may interfere with work or complicated situations in

which you need to be acting assertively and on your ownbehalf. Your mood and attitude is conciliatory, and your need

for love and approval heightened. Social gatherings andpersonal relationships are favored.

23 September to23 OctoberLIBRA

Withdrawing from emotional social contact is favored now, for evenwhen you are with others you are likely to feel separate and alone.Sadness and disappointments in your personal life are also probablenow. Inadequacies and flaws in your friends or lovers are particularly

bothersome to you now, and you may feel that you have nearlyexhausted your patience for dealing with these problems.

23 October to23 NovemberSCORPIO

At this time you may feel out of your element or out of sync withyourself or your surroundings. Interference from others requires

adjustment and perhaps sacrifice on your part. What you have to offeror want to do doesn't mesh well with what seems to be necessary. Whilenot a full blown crisis, it is a time of strain and tension, which can be

somewhat debilitating to your health.

23 November to22 DecemberSAGITTARIUS

Fateful encounters which are not altogether pleasant are indicated. Ifyou are in an established intimate relationship, it is apt to be roughsailing right now. Ultimatums, bringing up past pain and unresolvedissues, jealousy, or unusual neediness or possessiveness may all bepart of the scenario, and what makes all of this quite stressful is that

most of it is not blatant but subtle and insidious.

Method:

Cover the steaks with marinade and refrigerate for 2-3 hours. Make sure all the steaks are wellcovered. A re-sealable zip-loc bag works best for this. Just add all the steaks and marinade and shake

well. Braai the steak over very hot coals, about 3-4 minutes a side, turning only once. Season withbraai spice as you go along. Remove from the heat. Top with a dollop of flavoured butter and enjoy

the flavours melting into your steak.Flavoured butter: Combine the ingredients to form a paste. Refrigerate until needed.

Ingredients: FLAVOURED BUTTER:• T-bone steaks (make sure they are store- bought garlic butter,

thick cut with a healthy portion of softenedmeat on the fillet side) 1 Tbsbeef braai marinade of your choice grainy mustardbraai spice of your choice 3 sun-dried tomatoes, finelysea salt and freshly ground black choppedpepper

One can certainly name someadvantages and disadvantages toeach of the above, but I believethat to select the best name it isnecessary to have a long termper-spective.What will happen if Joe Soap’s

son or grandson, Andrew some-

day succeeds Joe inthe business? Or whatif Koekenaap BeautyParlour becomes arunaway success andbranches out to othertowns? The nameKoekenaap BeautyParlour may sit some-what uneasy in Ron-debosch.LastweekIdrovebe-

hind a vehicle adver-tising a business with a very de-scriptive name: “EarthquakeMo-bile Disco.” The name says it all.You can almost feel the vibes youcan expect should you make useof their services. It is also necessary to consider

a logo or slogan for advertisingyour business. “We will rock

you!” will go much bet-ter with EarthquakeMobile Disco than forexample “Music for themoment.”Furthermore, a

shorter name usuallyworks much betterthan one that is toolong. “Flame’s Place” ismuch easier to marketand advertise than“The Flame and Grill

Pizzeria and Restaurant.”Although the longer one is a lot

more descriptive, the shorter oneis just so much easier to use, forinstance when you answer thephone. The name is also important for

branding purposes. To build abrandusuallycomeswithyearsof

regular advertising and render-ing an excellent product or ser-vice. Therefore one can also con-sider whether the name signifiesquality or excellence andwhetherit is short and easy to remember.Add to that the letter type and

colours that you will use forbranding purposes and you’ll re-alise that there is more to thename of your business than justputting something on paper. It isimportant to invest some timeconsidering, selecting and plan-ning the name and branding ofyour business.David Malherbe is a business
