WC Health Minister visits PaarlThe Western Cape Minister ofHealth, Theuns Botha, visitedPaarl last week, to oversee thedelivery of chronicmedicationparcels to a chronic diseasesupport group.

This forms part of WesternCapeGovernment’shealthstrate-gy to deliver medicine parcels toalternative sites and reduce thepatient numbers at health facili-ties.“Alternative sites such as care

facilities are used to reduce pa-tient waiting times and to allevi-ate thebottlenecksexperiencedatpharmacy service points. It is es-timatedthat30%ofpatients intheMetro receive their medicationthrough thealternative sitedeliv-ery service, which translates into47 000 fewer patients that will at-tend theclinics eachmonth,” said

Botha.The government outsourced

the packaging and distribution ofpatientmedication parcels toUTiPharma. They collect prescriptions for

stable chronic patients fromhealth facilitiesanddispenses themedicine. The patient’smedicineis packed in a tamper-proof pack-age with outer labels as per legis-lation.Botha says tat CDU reduces

waiting times at clinics signifi-cantly. “The system has removed60% of the workload from HCpharmacies.“Patients receive a text mes-

sagethreedaysinadvancetoalertthem that their medicine parcelis ready for collection. Thismeans that working patients cancollect their medicines and re-turn to work.”

Entrepreneur: Racing to thetop or the bottom?DAVID MALHERBE

What makes Apple (Computersetc.) such a strong brand world-wide? Their products are waymore expensive thananyof theircompetitors’ products, yet al-most everybody would like tohave one.

I can assure you that trying to sellproducts cheaper than their com-petitorsisdefinitelynotpartof theirmarketing strategy. Many businessowners spend a lot of energy andplanning onwhat they can do to selltheir products or services cheaperthan everybody else. Unfortunate-ly, in the vast majority of cases thisis not sustainable andwill consumeall your energy.Seth Godin calls this the race to

the bottom;when a cheaper versionof your product or service comes onthe market, people will substitute

your product or service for thecheaper one and you’ll once againhave to cut on your price to stay inthe game. You really don’t want to win the

race to the bottom. What makes Apple so successful

is that they elected to rather go forthe race to the top, which means tomake excellence the goal they wantto achieve. Their motto is that theywant tomake their products beauti-fully designed, simple to use andus-er friendly. It iswell known that thelate Steve Jobs was adamant thatevery product had to be only thevery best.Jobs was once confronted with a

situationwhere themotherboardofanewmodelhad tobe finishedwith-in a very short period of time.Whenhe looked at the work the developerdid, heremarkedthat itwasnotneatenough. The developer said that thespecific part is something that no-

body will see and that the limitedtime available, makes it impossibleto finish the product off that well.Steve Jobs immediately got three

extra people to help the developer, but he insisted on the best quality.Producingexcellentquality isnot

the quickest way to grow your busi-ness, but it is for sure the way to goif you would like to grow a lastingbusiness. If you compromise onquality, you compromise your busi-ness’ future.David Malherbe and Dewald

Scholtz will discuss this topic inmore detail Monday evening from19:00 till 20:00 on Radio KC 107.7FMin the program “You the Entrepre-neur”.*DavidMalherbeisabusinessand

Do your bit for the ozone layerMost conventional air condition-ing units use R22 refrigerant gas. This gas and the use of it has beenbanned in all first world countriessince 1 January 2000 in accordancewithTheMontreal Protocol of 1987.This was done in an effort to savethe ozone layer.

Third world countries such asSouth Africa were extended anoth-er15yearstocomplywiththeproto-col. The gradual phasing out ofozone depleting gasses will affect

you, whether it’s domestically or inyour business.BuyingR22 products at this stage

can become very costly going for-ward. The new R410a gas units arenot only ozone friendly but also useconsiderably less electricity, thusfurther lessening our carbon foot-print.Ask for R410a units if you want

to do you’re bit for the ozone layerand the environment and also savesome money on electricity.

How you can keep yourself coolYoghurt will help you cool downyour system instantly.

It aids thebody in fightingagainstthe various digestion problemscaused during summers and alsohas calcium that strengthens thebones. What makes yoghurt betterthanmilkisthat it iseasiertodigest.Mix a few fresh fruits to make aquick fruit yogurt as an eveningsnack.Hog on fruits as they are the best

when it comes to making your tum-my feel light in summers. VitaminC is a key component that helps inbreaking down the fats in your body, hence, keeping you in shape. Fruitslike pears, melons, lemons, orangesand apples regulate the hydration lev-el of your body. Add a fruit to yourmealduringsummers tobeat theheat.Water is the first thing that pops up

in everyone’s mind during summers.Keepyourbodywell hydratedwith anadequate amount of water. This also

reduces the food intake helping youfight the food nausea. Apart from justwater, foods like cucumbers, lettuce, tomatoes, fruits such as watermelonsand lychees are extremely rich in wa-ter content. So, whenever you findyourself unwilling to drink water, gorge on these fruits and vegetables.Itmightmakeyourmouth stinkbut

it will definitely help you fight the

heat. Garlic increases blood circu-lation which helps you sweat. Thisway, it controls the body tempera-ture to keep your body cool. Anoth-eradvantageofhavinggarlic is thatit helps reduce cholesterol. All youhave todo isaddagenerousamountof garlic to your food this summerto pass the summer season withoutany glitch. If you were expectingyour favourite ice-cream to be onthe list, we should probably breakthe bubble for you. Ice and icecream are not the best of things tocool yourself down with. Of coursethey make you feel good, but that

is just temporary. In reality they in-terrupt the functioning of your diges-tive juices and affects your body’s in-ternal cooling system. We also under-stand that you love a pint of chilledbeer in the summer, but it only dehy-drates you more, thus, making yoursummer even more difficult. There-fore, tank up on the above coolingfoods and fight the summer blues.

Garlic is one of several foods that can help yourbody keep cool during summer.

15 ways to keep cool when hotKeeping coolwhen tempera-tures reachrecord highs isn’tjust about com-fort.

Dangerouslyhigh temperaturescan result in heat-related illnessesranging from heatcramps to heat ex-haustion and heatstroke. The follow-ing tips can helpyou keep cool allsummer long.

Alter your pat-tern of outdoor ex-ercise to take ad-vantage of coolertimes (early morn-ing or lateevening). If youcan’t change the time of your work-out, scale it down by doing fewer min-utes, walking instead of running, ordecreasing your level of exertion.

Wear loose-fitting clothing, prefera-bly of a light colour.

Cotton clothing will keep you coolerthan many synthetic.

Fill a spray bottle with water andkeep it in the refrigerator for a quickrefreshing spray to your face after be-ing outdoors.

Fans can help circulate air andmake you feel cooler even in an air-conditioned house.

Try storing lotions or cosmetic ton-ers in the refrigerator to use on hot, overtired feet.

Keep plastic bottles of water in the

freezer; grab one when you’re readyto go outside. As the ice melts, you’llhave a supply of cold water with you.

Take frequent baths or showerswith cool or tepid water.

Combat dehydration by drinkingplenty of water along with sportsdrinks or other sources of electro-lytes.

Some people swear by small, porta-ble, battery-powered fans. At an out-door event I even saw a version thatattaches to a water bottle that spraysa cooling mist.

I learned this trick from a tennispro: if you’re wearing a cap or hat, re-move it and pour a bit of ice cold waterinto the hat, then quickly invert it andplace on your head.

Avoid caffeineand alcohol asthese will pro-mote dehydra-tion.

Instead of hotfoods, try lightersummer fare in-cluding frequentsmall meals orsnacks contain-ing cold fruit orlow fat dairyproducts. As anadded benefit, you won’t have tocook next to a hotstove.

If you don’thave air-condi-tioning, arrangeto spend at leastpartsof thedayina shopping mall, public library,

movie theatre, or other public spacethat is cool. Many cities have coolingcentres that are open to the public onsweltering days.

Finally, use common sense. If theheat is intolerable, stay indoors whenyou can and avoid activities in directsunlight or on hot asphalt surfaces.Pay special attention to the elderly, in-fants, and anyone with a chronic ill-ness, as they may dehydrate easilyand be more susceptible to heat-relat-ed illnesses.

Don’t forget that pets also need pro-tection from dehydration and heat-re-lated illnesses too. Source:Medical Author: Melissa Conrad
