Symptoms & Diagnosis of EndometriosisMore than 5M women in the United States have endometriosis,

a condition where the endometrium (uterus lining) grows beyond the uterus, causing severe pain with every monthly cycle.

Painful menstrual cycle Pain with bowel movements Pain with sexual intercourse Low back pain Infertility

Symptoms vary depending on the location and severity of the endometriosis and may include:

A definitive diagnosis can only be made by direct visualization of the endometriotic lesions:

Diagnostic laparoscopyA small thin camera is inserted into the abdomen and the entire pelvis can be

inspected. Suspicious lesions can be resected for a diagnosis.

Treatment of EndometriosisEndometriosis is treated medically, surgically, or through a combination of both.

Pain Medication Hormonal MedicationMedical management includes management of pain with analgesics, as well as

hormonal suppression, used to treat symptoms. It does nothing to improve fertility, treat adhesions, or resolve endometriomas.

MEDICAL MANAGEMENT

SURGICAL MANAGEMENT

Definitive surgeryHysterectomy with or without removal of the ovaries is for women who do not

desire fertility or for women for whom conservative surgery has failed.

Conservative surgeryConservative surgery preserves the uterus, tubes and ovaries as much as possible

and is focused on removing endometriosis and improving symptoms through endometriosis fulguration, endometriosis resection (or endometriosis excision) or resection of ovarian endometriomas.
