In 1936 there was a fierce fight between the Nationalists (Fascists) and the Republicans.

In the European Theater, Germany’s quick war techniques and strong military allowed the army to have a number of successful victories. However, Germany eventually exhausted its resources.

Hitler invaded the Soviet Union because he wanted control of the country's oil and wheat fields.

•Stalingrad resulted in large casualties from both Germany and Russia.

•When Soviet soldiers moved back from the German army they burned everything behind them.

•Even though Russia lost thousands of men, they ended up winning the battle.

The Battle at Stalingrad was important because it was a battle where the German losses were so severe that it gave the Allied Powers an advantage.

In the European Theater, the goal was to defeat Germany and Italy. As the war dragged on, the Allied Powers needed a strategy to end the war.

•At the same time, the Allied powers were fighting in the Pacific Theater against Japan.

•A number of battles occurred in Japan.

•The Allies skipped over islands that were Japanese strongholds, attacking easier targets, in a process called island hopping.
