Students Today
People who have learned to use technology in their adult life are considered “digital immigrants”.
Today’s students are “digital natives”. They do not know a world without the personal computers, the Internet or cell phones.
Teachers and educational policy makers are digital immigrants that went to school in a very different era. Instruction that worked when they were in school will not work with the same effectiveness today.
Why on-line education at HHS?
It will prepare our students for college and the workplace.
Ultimately, it will provide students more flexible scheduling options.
On-line learning will allow for a more customized learning experience.
We can offer the appropriate blend of face-to-face (F2F) and on-line instruction. Our students will always be able to have classroom interactions with Huntley teachers.
Why Online Education at HHS?
We can ensure that the District standards are being met.
The private sector is moving into the online arena in K-12. Teaching kids is our core business: should we be outsourcing it?
It will allow for increased interaction between the student and fellow students, the instructor, the content, and outside resources
We can begin to use integrated formative and summative assessment mechanismsThis is not a curriculum change, it is
an instructional transformation.
Current Technology in D158
As curriculum and communication tools become web-based, we believe that every student needs to have ubiquitous access to the Internet
Many Huntley High School students are walking in with newer technologies than what we currently offer.
On average, 84% of teenagers have a cell phone.* Currently at HHS, we have 1 student computer per
every 5 students. *National average of students age 14-18 - Center on Media and Child Health
Current Technology in D158
Our current replacement cycle allows for PC replacement every
5-7 years.
Which one would you rather be using?
Current Technology
Currently, approximately $700k needs to be spent to keep up with our 5-7 year replacement cycle.
The cost of updating wifi network at the HHS is estimated at $100K+.
Should we be investing in these technology expenditures differently?
Can we think differently about we digitally connect students?
Partnering with Cellular Companies
Meetings with major cellular companies who have shown a strong interest in our vision
Looking for a company that will partner with D158 to offer flexible and affordable solutions for both the district and students.
Benefits include frequent equipment refreshes and 24/7 access for students.
Partnering with Cellular Companies
Students taking online blended courses would pilot the cellular connectivity program
Allow students to connect both in and out of school. Students would connect to a controlled, secure, and
safe network. The device is yet to be determined and will
continually change based current technology and needs of students.
HHS Blended Learning Project
Initial research was done to review what other school districts are doing with online learning.
Although research supports the benefits of the blended learning environment, there is no well documented k-12 model for blended learning.
Some schools have purchased an LMS (Learning Management Software) to manage this, use moodle, or use a variety of web-based software pieces that meet their online needs such as Wikispaces, google apps, etc.
Some schools are purchasing courses from other sources

HHS Blended Learning Project
The initial meeting with over 20 interested teachers was held at HHS in the fall.
After subsequent meetings, 6 teachers/courses have been identified for phase 1.
This committee continues to meet to discuss course development and policy.
Committee is currently working on developing a process for selecting students
Proposed Courses for 2011-2012
US History American Diversity Recent Fiction Pre-Calculus Biology Honors Biology

Courses would be scheduled during the last period of the day.
The number of days per week a student would physically class attend will depend on the course and the needs of the students
Initiating the process of attaining Remote Education Provider status from the state.
Financial Considerations
In a period of limited dollars we have to continually find the most effective ways to spend the money we have available.
Should we be spending millions of dollars on PC’s or should we be entering in partnerships with cellular companies.
The future is going to bring increasing space issues at HHS. On-line courses may help alleviate some of these issues.
As we are beginning a new, transformational instructional method, we will attempt to secure any outside dollars possible. Being at the forefront of the future increases our chances of doing so.
